So I suppose you also get annoyed by other forms of abstraction? If I say I'm working on some code, the language is not really relevant. If someone is solving a problem using HTML, COBOL, C, FORTRAN, Java, R, Stata, Python, Julia, or any other language they are still using code which is translated into binary to make a computer do something. Sorry but I fail to understand why abstracting some of the details of someone's work is so problematic to you and why there is any need for a holier than thou position on it.
-
@Hamada I work in the public sector. For me this is called just another day. So while I empathize with your position, I think your managers need to do a better job of managing expectations.
-
So what would happen if that project was for a major client and would cause all sorts of financial troubles for the company if the deadline was missed? If you think someone telling you that your priorities need to be reevaluated causes all your dev methodologies to get thrown out the window, you may want to consider your "methodologies" or how you implement them instead.

Or your partner is on birth control in which case no condom > with condom.
-
@johnfoobar that would be great, but aside from me all the people in my shop currently use Windows only. Depending on what type of budget I'm able to free up we may get ourselves a Linux box to use like a compute server, but that won't be happening for a while. I might be able to get them on machines running Windows 10 sooner (with the hopes that the Bash integration is at least decent).
-
@johnfoobar along those same lines, do you happen to know of any training tools that I could use to get this guy up to speed quickly? Even just like a cheat sheet with some basic computer terminology would be useful.
-
@johnfoobar this was all stuff that was being run explicitly at the command line (shp2pgsql to be specific). And for doing data analysis you should be familiar with the concept since you'd need to be able to load data. But as you mentioned a lot of programs tend to abstract this from the user a bit, particularly GUI driven analytic applications.
-
@Elkstorm also ironic that most people graduating from an education degree program have not been educated about basic computer literacy skills.
-
@Elkstorm not a dev, but a data analyst who should still have been taught those things a long time ago.
-
@Jumpshot44 it should be part of basic computer literacy but doesn't seem to be the case.
-
And this is why I'm struggling to figure out ways that I can pay people on a different salary schedule...can't get people with good coding chops when the compensation is crazy low.
-
@antoni4040 my wife thought the tabs vs spaces thing was totally made up when she saw it in Silicon Valley. I promptly intervened with a people in my office will use tabs and spaces only to align code. I hate waiting for the cursor to move over all the spaces.
-
@Fixxel both. I was trying to explain why he couldn't run what I had sent to load a bunch of shape files into a postgis enabled PostgreSQL instance. So I told him he needed to either make sure his console was in the same directory as the files or use an absolute file path.
-
Could also be any of the JetBrains IDEs with the darcula theme.
-
@antoni4040 tabs all the way.
-
I would say it's a combination of users not understanding the full ramifications of their request and insufficient number of business analysts available to clarify those requests before they get sent to the dev.
-
@vector300 it is sexual harassment if it is both sexual in nature and offends someone. It wouldn't matter who posted it, but anyone with management skills would want to get it removed ASAP to prevent the sexual harassment issue. We had to get briefings on this every 3 months in the Army, so I guess it sunk in after being read the same slide deck over and over again.
-
I had to wait months to get a company machine once before...might be a warning sign.
-
Although funny, this has sexual harassment written all over it.
-
@mattwebdev any idea whether or not that would be possible using AWS? I suppose I could confiscate my wife's laptop for a bit to set something like that up there, but it might be worth it to spin up a tiny server on AWS.
-
@Lreading any idea who did that? Sounds like an amazing investment of $50-100.
-
Got undergrad in Jazz Composition; play bass primarily, but used to also play guitar and drums as well. Played/toured regionally with a Soundgarden/Audioslave tribute band for a bit in college and did the band thing in the Army for a deployment too.
-
@daarkfall they can still find someone to pin things on if they use someone like EnterpriseDB's PostgreSQL distribution. I just hated the fact that I needed to learn a small amount of C# so I could get regular expressions in SQL Server.
-
Robbinsdale, MN it wouldn't have been as bad for us if it was in MA since I would have family relatively close by (Go Sox if you're from the area as well), but neither my wife nor I am from MN.
-
@jirehstudios thanks man. Definitely could use more humor these days.

FUCK!!!! I knew I forgot something else.

Seriously their door was 10 ft from ours and they had time to run downstairs to get a fire extinguisher and upstairs to fail at putting out the fire but couldn't find the motivation to alert everyone else in the building. The kicker is that we had shipping containers getting delivered later that morning so we could pack/move our stuff over the weekend. And to top it all off, the mind dead fuck face that set the building on fire went on the news crying about how concerned she was and then say in her boy friends truck in the parking lot smoking another fucking cigarette.

Unfortunately for me 127.0.0.1 now returns a 404.

I wish so badly to do this to/with my now former next door neighbor's. Might not bring any of my shit back but damn would it feel good to get the frustration out.
