How useful is my degree? I'm not sure to be honest. I did get to dive into a lot of subject matter which I find interesting and challenging. I also had to learn stuff I hate (solving matrices of differential equations). Strangely though, even though I doubt I will ever use this I am proud of myself for having slugged though it.
The teachers were helpful and supportive, I got to study in groups and had access to resources such as the university's GPU cluster.
In my day2day? So far, I cannot see anything I use directly. However, the university forced me to learn to pick up different technologies quickly, read the documentation, ask for help when your don't understand something. So, in that regard I think I profited from university.
I wasn't the best student by a long shot. My class mates helped me a lot. I struggled A LOT. Having been in the recieving end of a helping hand, o return the favour where ever I can. -
Production is down
Me to Customer :What did you do?
Customer: Nothing

Customer:... Well, I did run these scripts..

Today I took an extra swig of idiot juice and deleted my /usr/lib directory in the first 5 minutes of the day.11

New job (first CS job).
Day 1: Install Ubuntu
Day 2: Dev said "it was so cute when he asked if he could uninstall windows." Also, first pair programming with engineer of 12 years. First commit (he did all the work, I just tried keeping up."
Day 3: "Here, try this bug " nearly get there. Have to leave early. Team event (Group VR experience, was wicked fun with drinks afterwards. Turns out boss man is a total bad ass. Swam with sharks and giant Wales)
Day 4: Fix bug. Notice odd behaviour. Fix that too. (All on my own). Code review: "This, that but works and is good." Get asked if I want to go to customer to do A, B and C. Tell Boss I only know B. He said "Tell me what you need for A and C."
I'm so God damn happy.8 -

First day on the job. Get Windows 10 laptop. Ask if I can use Ubuntu.
"Well everyone else is using it so I don't see why not"
So. Much. Win!!!11 -
I can't help but think the red headphones in the avatar are Beats. Those are terrible headphones! PLEASE ADD SOME NON DECREPIT BLACK ONES.
It makes me angry every time I see them.11 -
On reccomendation of @chabad360 I made this its own rant.
I switched from marketing to CS (complete with a three year degree, no Bootcamp). I still went to interviews as you'd expect a marketing man to go; in a suit. Commence the weirdest interview.
$I: interviewer
$M: Me
I: "You're not the typical engineer. Can you talk to real engineers?"
M: "could you elaborate"
I:"you're dressed in a suit. That leads me to think you're a MS user. Do you think you could talk to real, ie. Linux using engineers?"
M: " well, I haven't used windows in about a year soo..
I: "Mac isn't Linux."
M: "I'm aware. I've switched to Ubuntu so I could use KVM-QEMU android emulator with GPU pass through to train Deep Convolution Networks on mobile devices. Also had to compile Google's internal build tool because it had bugs I had to fix so I could compile the APK."
I: "ah, Ubuntu eh? **Insert Smirk** How about a follow-up?"
M: "no, I'm switching to Gentoo this week and would like to talk to real engineers about that."
I thanked him for the coffee and left.1 -
Inspired by Max Payne's
"The Things That I Want"
I present Polaroidkidd's
"The Things That I Love"
A sleeping girlfriend.
A terrace in a warm summer night with a power outlet.
A cold beer.
A pack of cigarettes.
A working WiFi.
A pair of charged Bose 35 QuietComforts.
A minimal electro playlist.
A peace of mind, attainable solely through solitude.6 -
Hello devRant from Croatia!
Nothing like a day of breezy beach with sunshine and, to finish off the day, learn some Spring-Boot!

For those of your who have been following me, I would like to announce that I have received a perfect score for my bachelor thesis (OnDeviceAI, ie. Training neural networks in mobile phones.4

Gets too exited for sleep because thing works3 -
I'm trying to generate a PDF from a website (https://devhints.io/react) on Ubuntu, but the two packages I tried (htmldoc and htmltopdf) both split the code at onto separate pages. I'm trying to have the code blocks on one page or start a new page and then have the title of the code block and the code block.
Any ideas?2 -
Technically not andev rant but fuck it. This pusses me off no no end.
PC gaming as I used to love it, is ending.
E3 for pc gamers was a death march. With the exception of hitman and just cuz 4, which are both more of the same. Don't get me wrong, I'll play them both because they're good fun, but look at the PS4 lne up. Control, Anthem, Detroit and more, all NEW IPs.
Meanwhile over in PC world we get the 50th billionth Battle Royal and (surprise) another JC.
I couldn't even being myself to finish Origin (WHICH WANT EVEN A GOD DAMN ORIGIN STORY)
sigh
I'll have to get a PS4. I just LOATHE playing FPS with a controller.
Oh, yeah, and a new fallout. With one mode. Which is great because it means I get to be fragged and tea bagged by 9 year old Asian kids..4 -
I want to intall a bare bones Linux set up with i3-wm. I'm looking at a Base antergos installation and continue to configure from there. Do you thing that this is a good place to start after using i3-wm on Ubuntu or would you recommend another distribution?
To add to it, the laptop ideally uses Nvidia Optimus2 -
Her: What do you do?
Me: I'm writing my thesis on bringing AI to smartphones.
Her: I think AI is terrible!
Me: oh, you are an engineer too?
Her: No
Me: oh, you've studied economics and or ethics and are worried about its implications on society?
Her: No, but have you?
Me: I have a degree in economics, an MBA and an now about to get my BSc in CS.
Her: well, regardless I still think it's terrible.
Me: well in that case how about you shove your unfounded opinion where the sun don't shine!18 -
Came across this comment on r/programminghorror/
> We're you talking with my co-worker? He's extremely abrasive, especially when it comes to anyone touching his code because "Now I don't know how it works anymore" -
Handed off my code to Devs working on main products. Long presentation explaining everything.
Have discussion afterwards about what it does, but not how it looks.
They say thank you, I say you're welcome, and since this is my first bigger project, if they have some pointers or glaring defects in the code I'd welcome the feedback.
They all start laughing. I do too but in my head I'm like "wtf, I ask for feed back and you laugh? That's."
It's been bothering me.2 -
IT WORKS! IT WORKS! I CAN TRAIN AM AI DIRECTLY ON MY PHONE!!!
I'm opening my thesis with the quote
"Ok. Now if you don't mind, I need to concentrate. What I'm about the attempt next is on the tricky side of damn near impossible"
Now for building am inference mechanism and theny Bachelor's Thesis is SAVED!
Suck on THAT every master of AI who claimed it wasn't possible due to computational constraints.
"Just" have to type it up now -
Seriously, fuck Bazel. It's the most unintuitive build tool I have ever had the displeasure of coming across.
It works, but try compiling an Android app, that uses deps from gmaven, maven and jcenter and has java, as well as native dependencies.
It's fucking impossible. -
Should I wipe my duel boot Ubuntu/Windows and install antergos base + X + i3-wm during my final month of thesis?
Is there a really good reason to drop Ubuntu in favour of antergos base?1 -
Ok, I get it, stickers are "cool". However, every time I see a laptop full of them I can't help but think three things.
1) Why on earth would your ruin a perfectly nice, clean, design.
2) I see the stickers and think "wow, (s)he must really be a fan of a lot of tech companies
3) I think your were one of those kids in school that glued stickers of skateboard apparel manufacturers to your backpack because it was the "cool" thing to do.
But mainly the ruined design thing bothers me. Just..... WHY!?!15 -
FML. All those "train your own object detection" articles can go burn in hell. Not even TFs pertained models work!10

Got rid in Windows completely because I realised I could never mine without the i3-wm. I can't help but remember when my Pokémon leveled up way back in the day and think
"Congratulations! Your polaroidkidd has evolved! 😅
