@ebrithil: I though that, too. And, I guess I still do, but I actually had an incident a couple of years ago that left the CPU with ... what do you call that, heatmarks? It had some clearly blackened/darkened areas on it.

Still worked though after I applied a new layer of thermal paste and installed a new cooler.

That said, I'm not sure the rice method currently works reliably, as the asians the rice is supposed to attract might be under quarantine due to the corona virus... 😛

For me, the scary part is that we have lost the knowhow on manufacturing so many things.

We can't be independent from Chinese manufacturing, probably not before investing what could be years of gearing up production capabilities in quite a few areas again.

So many products in our lives rely either directly or by virtue of their internals on stuff that comes from China.

Maybe it would make the US (and europe, for that matter) "great again" if chinese production were to collapse, but only after years of turmoil.

Am I being too pessimistic there?

Not saying the guy is dead, just saying there might be a reason why he said it's much worse than reported. I'm sure everyone has heard the rumors about mass cremations in the thousands, so ... yeah. If things were mostly harmless and overhyped, would China really close off their markets? This could potentially plunge the modern world of contract manufacturing into chaos.

That said, outside of China, yet, little has happened so far, and there's some overhype going on. In any event, the death toll seems to be way too small for it to become a true pandemic of apocalyptic proportions. Could still become a major hassle if it can't be contained, though.

The code included a comment hinting at the fact that doing it this way won't work as well, but that was purged, too.

And, as I wrote, I generally understand the reasoning and support the idea, but being overzealous is never a good thing, imo.

Why did I leave in that code?

Well, some months later, a different dev got to work on the same code, and he came up with a brilliant simplification.

He spent a week with this, but in the end, it turned out it didn't work this way due to some arcane, unforseeable specifics.

The implementation he spent this week on and that had to be rolled back in the end?

Yeah, looked eerily similar to the code I had left in there, commented out... you know, so other devs could see that this was tried before, but didn't work.

I understand the reasoning behind not wanting commented code in there, but you purists are like those folks washing their hands five times in an hour because of bacteria and stuff.

Nobody in their right mind will go through the git history to find stuff like that...

Clarification: I still haven't managed to do either myself. 😒

A superior of mine once told me, many years back, in my first job, that he though one ought to be out of the dev job by the age of 30 at the latest.

In hindsight, I think he made a fair point, if you want to escape the treadmill of "dev lifestyle", that's one way out, being promoted to a position that is essentially about telling others what to code.

The same is true these days for all those SCRUM positions, you don't have to keep up with the latest and greatest coding fads if you're not actually coding, at least much less so.

The other way is, in my experience, to just settle down somewhere, be self-reliant and just forget about the latest and greatest to a large degree.

Many innovations in software dev in the last 20 years are essentially just about switching things that have proven themselves capable, but with some caveats, with other new shiny things thought to be more capable, but who came with other caveats yet to be discovered. Once they are, on to the next approach...

Only that most guys at the time refused (or at the very least were very reluctant) to adopt it, even though our manager (he was a dev, too) explicitly asked everyone to do just that.

Then a new lead dev was hired and he wanted to set up a build server. We kinda didn't get along and I left the company, that was years ago.

Recently, I visited the sole dev still working there, and what are they using for publishing these days? Still my old tool, as it turns out.

One thing I can't help but wonder about is if the dwindling ad revenue is remotely fair.

Sure, in the web, you can track the exact clickthrough rates and stuff, but I don't know if anybody sees a Porsche billboard - or even a Coca Cola billboard - and runs off to buy the product immediately. It's all subtle "brand building". Online ads could be just the same, but noooo, here advertisers expect people to actually click on the ad to immediately visit the website of the coca cola company...

Then again, those news sites made their bed and now have to lie in it. They were greedy and didn't care one bit if they inconvenienced their readers with side banners and popup banners and layer ads and whatnot, upt to the point where ad blockers gained widespread traction.

And now they think they can strongarm people to subscribe - to each site individually, no less.

Never gonna work, imo.

I've been flagged as a commercial user multiple times, because I had to use the (registered) TV version supplied from my company when working from home. This caused the TV copy I use strictly privately on a different PC (but on the same internet connection in this case) to report commercial useage.

Thankfully, they reset everything to private use within a few days in each case (I think it happened three times now).

TV is pretty cool in my book, and it's kinda understandable that they want to gather some $$$ from the commercial users at least. Surprising enough that it's actually free for private use in the first place.

That said, there SHOULD be competition, but everything else I tried was FAR worse in some way or the other...

I honestly don't know - neither do I REALLY know what a Data Scientist's job is in detail - we had one in my old company, and all he did (that I became aware of) was find creative ways to mine our different company databases for customer data. He built fancy SQL querys that broke our application in the process because they blocked tables and stuff. Fun times. 😜

Anyway, I imagine having some amount of experience on the job might help tremendously.

Allowing remote work is always a trust issue to a degree, and trusting someone with no production experience is even more difficult, I imagine...

It's scary because there's always the chance that you ... forget to log out when breaking up the work session with gaming or anime.

Don't get me wrong, even if that were the case, it's the productivity that counts, and there's a decent chance it might be higher even WITH a paid gaming break or two.

However, output is not easily measured in our profession, and that's where the scariness comes in. HomeOffice and remote work are totally the norm in sales. Because the bottom line of a sales employee is pretty darn obvious.

For developers, things are much, much more murky.

And if a sales manager brings in excellent numbers whilst wasting a ton of his time away on facebook, youtube or even in World of Tanks, he's still seen as an excellent sales rep and treated as such.

Think about it, if a dev would finish all his assignments brilliantly a week before the sprint ends, would that result in him being celebrated or in him getting a considerably higher workload come next sprint?

@gronostaj Regarding OEM versions, it really depends. AFAIK over here there was a ruling way back in 2000 that permits the sale of those versions, license agreement be damned. So chances are, these are ok, possibly depending on where you live.

I got like 5 licenses for Win10 in this manner over the years, and none of those has ceased working.

Another matter are the single-use keys, usually from a corporate volume license. These even often will cease working - but the already installed OS won't be affected by this.

I got a friend who was too cheap to get a $10 win10 key and instead got one for like $1.50 which worked like that.

I had a ton of overtime until recently and used to skip mondays for a couple of months ... thus I can attest that the hatred of tuesdays afterwards is considerably weakened by the fact that you just had a three day weekend. 😜

I thought web forms were a great idea on paper, but not very well executed, not very well supported and ... well, I pretty much was under the impression the technology was discontinued like 15 years ago. Thus, it was never developed into something better. Thus, of course it's sh*t, right?

Because I have never met one of them. Non-straight people, sure. A couple who actually changed their gender with an operation. But none who were unsure about their gender.

My annectodal impression would be that there are so few of those, it'd make more sense to have alternate rules for fans of Chelsea London or something, but ... obviously I must be wrong.

I never liked 3rd person shooters and stuff.

Much time was wasted explaining people of how the player character obstructed the view, how aiming was more difficult "over the shoulder" and other nonsensical reasons when in truth I'd just been extremely forward thinking.

In 3d person games, you can see your player character. When you can pick your pc's gender, male players pick female chars so they can stare at their buttocks for hours and hours. Thus, 3rd person games objectivise women and promote sexism.

Little did I know. 😆

I prefer the one where you load the page, wait a couple of seconds, then click on a link, but in the moment you click, some ad on top of the page loads and pushes the link further down, registering your click on the banner or on some random other content instead. Yay. 😒

I only faced daily standups belonging to one of these two categories:

1. Everyone on the team is closely collaborating anyway, and thus the standup is completely pointless.

2. Everyone works more or less on their own stuff that is of little to no concern to the work of the others, thus the standup is completely pointless.

The only people I found to benefit from them are superficial management positions such as Scrum Masters or Project Managers, those spend their days in meetings and it's one of the few chances they get to gather ANY info on what's going on in the team at all.

Thus, I feel it's just a misnomer, if you would call it daily role call, that'd be much closer to the truth of it.

But maybe I've just been unlucky.
