@polaroidkidd no, not really. Just make sure you go to the driver manager after installation and pick the NVidia driver (not nouveau). One thing to note is you won't be able to use hybrid graphics (intel and NVidia at the same time), but you can pick which card to use using the 'prime-select' command. Good luck!
-
I dont recommend using 16.04. 17.10 worked right out of the box on my laptop (NVidia optimus). 18.04 LTS is right around the corner too

@Zerocchi kind of a GNU/Linux guy so :P

@Tommy314 there's a utility to upgrade the Mac Pro 4,1 to a 5,1. Anddddd... Uhhh well of all the people it can mess up with it was me :/
-
@helloworld Not the newest mac pro, it's a early 2009 one
-
What did you use before on Windows? My friend used to use FL Studio on Windows now he runs it on Wine and all the VSTs work and stuff
-
@azous normal mac pro, but mac pros are basically servers anyway :P (Xeons and whatnot)
-
@ShivamRawat0l personally I use KUbuntu: I like KDE, and I find Ubuntu has a nice middle ground of stability and updates. Also works nice with my NVidia Optimus gpu.
Choose a simple/easy distro for now, and if you want move on to something more advanced ones like Arch. -
@ShivamRawat0l just try them all! Just try a handful of distros by putting them on a USB and booting off of it. After that pick the one you like and install it.
As a side note: When choosing a distro have 2 categories in mind. The Desktop Envrionment (DE) and the base distro. The DE is the thing you stare at (the GUI, basically startmenu and bundled apps and what not), and the base distro is the actual Linux distro (different package managers, update tools, etc).
For example if you like KDE and Fedora then use Fedora KDE remix. Likewise, if you like Budgie with Ubuntu, get Ubuntu Budgie.
Once you pick make sure its compatible with all your hardware. Pretty much everything should work, but your Nvidia gpu might be a problem (make sure you can use the Nvidia binary driver).
When in doubt, google your computer or the part model (like: Gtx 1050 Ubuntu support). -

@MrThompson idk i used to rep windows like no tomorrow until i dipped my toes into linux, and eventually into the world of free software and stuff. I wont refuse to use proprietary software but I much prefer FOSS now.

Maybe the program needed that many prime numbers but calculating it on fly would take too long... ?
-
@Snatchedd Yea! They're pretty good. Only 2 complaints from me is you kinda have to hold it a certain way, and it has a slightly lower DPI than I would like (also setting the DPI in linux is sorta broken). Other than that, awesome mouse!
