I haven't had issues with promotions really, but in my performance evaluations they always have me just under exceeds expectations (even the year they later promoted me to Sr. Software Engineer...).
It's ALWAYS you need to expand your influence more.... but when I explain that I do have influence in every area we interact with... it changes to "yes, all of the managers under our Sr. Director know that, but we need the influence more visible..."
Me just thinking "isn't selling me to your peers during calibration your job....." -
I've been bad about this recently, but the most helpful thing I've found is to write a note on physical paper describing with at least some context what I want my future self to do the next day and where to start.

@Demolishun can't see it
-
@Hazarth I would agree with you if it wasn't taking me 3-5 days to get dev environment change controls approved that I've been getting approved in 2 hours or less for years. And to be clear, I am still working, but... this is DevRant... I'm ranting.

Counting the minutes wasted by this pointless meeting that could have been an email? Yes... we're at one hour and 13 minutes.

I can't speak for every employer... but the stated requirements tend to be a bullshit smokescreen to dissuade the incompetent. If you think you meet the knowledge/skill requirements of the post but not experience, just apply.

@electrineer
I agree a fresh install skews perception, I'm not arguing that, but I disagree that new Windows operating systems seem faster.
This is all anecdotal and just based on my possibly flawed memory:
Xp to Vista: Obvious performance downgrade.
Vista to Win7: Obvious improvement.
Win7>Win8: I didn't really notice much, but I hated Win8 as a concept.
Win8-Win10: I haven't had any significant performance issues. Certainly never thought there were performance enhancements.
I'm not too worried about Win11, but I also don't really expect a performance boost. If I'm wrong, I'll be pleasantly surprised.
I do use WSL a lot though. It wouldn't surprise me to see improvements there. -
It's like any "thinking" job. Be patient. Learn from your mistakes. Ask questions. Right down the answers to the questions so you don't piss off your seniors by asking the same question more than once :).
(And please.... don't ask a question until you've at least done a Google search / looked at Stack Overflow / read the documentation. Most of us devs are willing to help, if we know you've already done your due diligence.) -
Hopefully it works out for you. I've used Ubuntu most frequently as my alternate OS (probably for the last 12 years or so) and was actually using it a lot the last time I installed... but an update made it unbootable, and I was aggravated enough to not try to repair.

Meh, to each their own. I don't personally like the multicolored ones, but I like my blue backlit keys. Everyone has different tastes.

"Most" of the time, I like being explicit.
Point p = new Point(5,3)
Mostly because I have far more production Java than C# and that's just what I'm used to. -
@melezorus34 thanks!
-
@hardfault oops.... my bad. Read right over it twice.

Just here to say, that song's name (in its original, non-disdain form) is "Remember the Name" by Fort Minor, for those that didn't know. (A cool song)

Won't*... it's been a long week

My teammate next to me curses to himself all day every day. I'm always amazed that nobody complains about it, but he's been there over 30 years so I think everyone is waiting for him to retire lol. I tend to talk to myself too, but I find writing things down as I think helps mitigate the frequency a bit.

@Jumpshot44 Thanks! Possible, yes. It will just make me need to reprioritize my other responsibilities.
