How old were you when you started programming?

I'm curious about that... I want to introduce childs to programming but I'm not sure which age is the correct one to begin.

I started around 15; visual basic on school computers

Commodore 64 basic at 8

I started at 14, but nowadays I teach computational thinking (using scratch) to kids starting at 8+. That works out fairly well, although it's not for everyone (as is any subject) and it is my experience that some proficiency in reading is a big factor.

As I'm writing this I just noticed that I'm coding for exactly half my life. Started with 14.

@theScientist Because the it's kind of blurry. I don't know if you can call it programming if you simply copy some python code from a book and are glad and proud because it's working. If not, then 7, because that's when I started making console quizzes for my parents on my own. If yes, then 6, because then I made a Moorhuhn game copied from a book. But I gotta add, that I understood most of the code already, but couldn't come up with own.

I was 11 when an unsuccessful project to provide computers to all schools in my country (Honduras) hit my school...
There was a program they showed us so we could learn some basic programming knowledge. It had a little turtle, and you were to tell it how to move... So I started when I was 11.
Now I am aiming to be evangelist...

Jmm, scratch sounds pretty interesting. I will give it a sight, perhaps... I don't see the point of starting programming in Visual Basic. I think it makes learning another languages so difficult.

By the way, I started at 8 with C

8 with php on an old pc without internet.

I started somewhere between 8 and 9, probably before with DOS QBasic. I vaguely remember a Vic-20 and Basic when I was about 5 or 6, but you can barely call that programming.

I remember playing with HTML/JS in early 96, and gotten my hands on a copy of Visual Basic at about the same time. Then it was Delphi/Pascal in early 2000, then I started college in 2003 and learned C, C++, Java, .Net, and all those nice things.

Startet html and css with 15 and programming a few years later with Java.

First poked into QBasic at 9 years old. Amazing experience drawing a circle on a screen

Started simple batch scripting with 13 and real programming with 15.

8, it started with Visual Basic

Got a book of Basic from the local library at around 10 typed the examples word by word but had no idea what I was doing. Then made a second attempt with python at around 14 or 15 and it snapped. Been learning Java c# Javascript since then. School tried to teach me html and css but I never really got the hang of it. Oh well, don't want to be a designer anyway.

I was something like 15 or 16 when we had an opportunity to take a programming course, which was just the very basic procedural stuff with turbo pascal. Also had another course at the time which was more like general IT stuff, which also contained a small webpage-project. (Pure HTML)

I started at 23... it hurt to learn. Growing up with it would've been a smoother introduction to the languages and logic

Checkout Hello Ruby, its a story/worksheet thing to teach toddlers the core principals behind programming. It was developed by a preschool teacher in Netherlands I think.

I helped out back at the kick-starter for my little nephew, got my backers digital around here somewhere.

Obviously does not teach actually language coding, but problem solving and creative thinking and all those core skills that we developers use, a d wish most other people could.

I started when I was 11 but I started with Scratch.

I started with C# when I was 12 but I think you could probably get a kid interested in programming at 6 or 7. Maybe even earlier.

Around 13...

If you count cheeting in qbasic nibbles by changing levels through trial and error then 11 or 12. I had no real access to computers before that. So I at least started when I got my first computer

I started at 12 with VB and evolved as a self-taught to Java till now, at 15.

Looking back... I wish I started like most. You know, before PUBERTY! Hahaha. Greatest regret. I started at 35.

Around 10yrs old.. C and toying around with html css and js even before. Moving from there to php. Funny that almost 20 years after and im still playing with js

@Teravan. Thanx man. Sorry for being so pessimistic but I have been trying to apply this fact in my life but haven't been able to do so yet. Most probably I am wrong😅.

I started programming when I was like 13 I think. It was in LittleBigPlanet. I just didn't know I was programming back then.

@pal3117 Give you a drink and dont compare you to what you see outside. Programming is an individual skill, everyone has his style. What you have to have in mind is to get better, only that.

Oh, and comment your code, always.

I started with C# when I was 17, but I think it would have been fun to start much earlier.
