Corporations are adult daycare. Their goals aren't to produce anything, their goal is to keep the peasants busy.
My boss doesn't have time to micromanage me because he have actual work to do. He just expect my shit to work so he can do his. -

Also, there has to be looked at more aspects like, produces the slower dev less bugs? Tests he extensively maybe?
But also, we're stupid to think dev is a fast process in general. Go slow, go fast. -

retoor87383d@CaptainRant yeah, but that's what I mean with go slow, go fast. Producing less recurrent tickets. If you're a oh so fast programmer, it's for nothing if you get ticket back. The 'slower' one probably wins.

they don't have the expertise of being a grunt
isn't hard to prove that you can get a coffee faster if you just walk there and make it, as opposed to writing every action you did in the making of the coffee
doesn't have anything psychological to do with it. you're just making people's brains process junk data by having them write everything down. even code runs slower if you have it debug log every little thing

@jestdotty Yes, I agree.
In my case it does have to do with the psychological aspect affecting my entire career. Though things do go slower that way.

You'll get better at it when you get proper critique, but who is going to (critically) critique their boss/superior.
But yes team dynamics can be complex, and a good manager should be able to see them and encourage healthy ones.
It's "cultural fit" that you're describing btw and it can be just as complex to get that right as the person hiring, especially long term, and even more so if upper management decides to have a tissy and switch from remote to office for instance -
@BordedDev My experience critiquing my boss has been that I have just annoyed them and they start to dislike me for not agreeing with their bullshit.
Some devs are toxic as fuck and will behave toxic no matter what. They have a 'gtfo' attitude the whole time, like children.
It becomes really difficult to culturally fit any possible team, when you switch teams all the time. Yes, there are assholes in teams, but sometimes the company just focuses on money and tells us that we should just suck it up. -
@CaptainRant Yup and that's why people/bosses don't get better. It's one of the reasons I don't like getting a lot of praise/complements. Team switching will do that yeah, at some point people get tired of new people

I figured a raise but instead I kept getting genuine compliments from high level people who don't give any and somehow the company at the same time even slashed my bonuses, aside from never raising me despite me being heavily underpaid... I was so angry
and then another place because they kept glowing about me and someone else got jealous and went to sabotage war with me and I was just facepalming cuz management kept backing them up as they destroyed everything at the company...

People like to ego stroke instead of backing up their words. And if they figure out ego stroking works, they tend to abuse it aka, "You're so smart could you look at this" at 4:55 PM
So when that happens now is that becomes a "what have you found out to manipulate me" or I just ask what they want -

my best friend growing up had a problem against that sort of ego so if I ever got maniacally cocky he would bonk me over the head so I guess I don't have issues controlling myself under that one lol
also I think it lets me better know if someone genuinely means compliments or they're just hoping for something. a lot of times people give you compliments because they just want you to take their pain away -- whatever the problem is. I don't think they're very cognizant of it. I just read desperation and hope off them, and it's those feelings that give them rose tinted glasses about you (I'm sure that's why people get sycophantic about politicians also). whereas there's genuine compliments, where everything is quiet... and they say it out of nowhere cuz they remembered things you did and it meant a lot to them (actually it's generally not sappy but surprise from their end 😁)

One of the most detrimental things for a developer is having a team who doesn't understand the developer and doesn't fit the developer's personality. This is often overlooked.
Management likes to try and be 'scientific' and start to micromanage, as if the cause of someone's slowness really is their technical skill. No, it's often psychological in nature. A great manager will have a one on one real talk with you. A bad manager will ask you to log every single thing you do on every single day and instead of caring for you they will immediately delegate the issue away without taking into account the psychological conflicts between employees and hidden bullying. You can't solve people problems with business processes.
What doesn't help: ignoring the issue and just softening it with "It's your first time, you will get used to it" or "You will get better at this over time". No, you won't.
One of the sure ways to let a developer spiral down into failure is to not address these kinds of issues. Don't promote a former employee to manager. I think a real manager has to have the personality and studies for it. People aren't cogs and life is not black and white. You are dealing with people. People are infinitely complex. How often they forget this.
