It feels good when you mentor someone.
I did GSoC 2018, so I encouraged my friends(3) to take part in GSoC'19. On May 6 the results were declared and I wasn't selected (hurts) but 2 of my friends were selected and after hearing that I completely forgot about my own failure.
I mean one of them didn't even knew how to code in December'18 and he got selected for the program in May'19.
I have to admit it was frustrating in the starting, explaining how Git works, how not to mess up branches etc but in the end it all paid off.
But still there was some work to do because only 2/3 got selected so I pushed the 3rd, told him not get demotivated, started finding internship for him and now he'll be working with an org on developing their app.
Weird thing about this is that neither I got selected for the program nor I have an internship for the summers but I am still f**king happy.2 -
When you take a job, take a long look at the people you’re going to be working with — because the odds are you’re going to become like them, they are not going to become like you. You can’t change them. If it doesn’t fit who you are, it’s not going to work.1

Let me tell you a little story about a butthurt designer.
Once upon a time there was a butthurt designer.
And he lived butthurt ever after.
The end.2 -
Boss: agrees to unreasonable deadlines.
Team: misses deadlines because they're unreasonable.
Boss: "you just don't understand how important the deadline is"
He legit thinks the only reason we fall behind, is because we dont care. Not because we're doing stuff that hasn't been done before, and need to tech ourselves everything as we go.
Also, he's not a programmer, he's a salesman... and he runs the company like one too.
Anyone looking to hire a VR/AR developer?5 -
There’s a special place in hell for fuckwits who create tickets and don’t include the fucking error message.8

Do you guys have tips for job hunting while still employed? My current company doesn't allow sick leaves without medical certificates and doesn't allow simple "headaches". How do you guys make time for interviews?8

Seriously ? Thanks for nothing ? Is this an appropriate subject, given that you are sending Thanksgiving greetings to your users ? Honestly I feel attacked. I'll probably unsubscribe and block them.14

If your parents are Software Engineers, and you still want to be a Software Engineer. Chances are you are adopted.

Fuck that fucking company three way while dozens of homeless HIV crack junkies puke and shit their diarrhea on the three bosses!
I can't put it in words how stupid they are!
Let me try to tell you the latest story while I try not to get multiple strokes.
Backstory: We are three devs, all with a TCCI certification. One has been working for us for almost a year, the other one has been working for us since one and a half year. Both are good friends of mine, btw. I have been working there for almost three years.
Fortunately, I am allowed to work on a reasonable computer. The other devs work on PC's with Windows 7 and 8!
One has just 400 MB space left on his drive and has to delete every month some shit because he does not want to be able to call up websites anymore... How awful?!
The PC of the other great Dev Crashes three to six times a day and needs about 30 minutes to start up!
We can be so productive, but...
We told that in February one of our bosses and asked him to buy new hardware. His answer: yes, of course, I understand that, it's my turn (he always says that "ich bin da dran")
We got a new colleague in the middle of this fucking month. She is responsible for conception.
She works on an old notebook, but today she gets a fucking new PC to work on while the devs are trying to weld with a sparkler! Better hardware than every other Dev PC!!!
Guess what? She is the daughter of a friend of one of our bosses!
We are the only devs at this company.
Fuck that fucking company! Fuck that fucking bosses!
I think we don't go to work for that fucking company anymore!6 -
i am actually exciting to go to work tommorow.

Over the weekend the gf was away and it was quite boring, gaming didnt do the thing so i relaxed quite a lot but i am somewhat excited to continue to work tomorrow, to further my project. I was able to stop to do nothing at home, but still..its a bit weird3 -

You can always fucking tell when it is the season of economics student "entrepreneurs", by just scrolling through the job feed - "payment not verified", "$10k", "NEXT BIG IDEA", "I need", ..7

Fuuuuuck this.
The shit i see at work with some fucky codebases.
I should have just gone to music school.
Oh ya, i never shared that with you devrant fam. I was going for music school before comp sci.
:)
But yeah, wonder how that would have gone.6 -
I saw a SO question where the dev commented on his own question "I might have an idea, don't answer me" and never posted anything else. This dumbass deserves a special place in hell7

Matched with a girl on Tinder who studies Artificial Intelligence.
Me: "I see you study AI, how cool! Is it hard?"
She hasn't texted back for 3 days
What did I do wrong?34 -
*edits file on remote server*
WanBLowS: naah you can't 😈
*le wild BSOD appears for the over 9000-th time*
... Yeah. Windows, great job. Who needs system integrity when they're working on remote servers anyway, right?!
And to top it all off, le reboot mentions that they're working on fucking "features" again. That's what you needed to BSOD for?! For a goddamn motherfucking feature?!! Fucking piece of shit.
At least when I opened vim on that server again, it's saved everything neatly in the .swp files, ready for recovery. Now that's neat, isn't it? Microsoft, the Linux community has already moved on to nvim in terms of development, but maybe, just maybe, you can learn a thing or two from our "legacy software", vim.
As for me, maybe it's time to take out my Arch laptop again. At least that won't crap out on me because the sun and the stars are in a position that the OS doesn't like, or something stupid like that. FUCK YOU MICROSHIT!!!11 -
Software engineering is slowly being lowered to a basic skill to please corporations that literally want you to automate your job away. The only fruitful areas of software engineering that I can see being relevant in the next 10 years are those mixed with other hard sciences such as bioinformatics, robotics, bleeding edge statistics and mathematics (AI research), physics, etc. The trend I see right now is that software engineering is being integrated with business-oriented degrees or arts degrees, targeted programs towards beginners offered for free or low prices. There's going to be a higher barrier of entry for the jobs that are actually worth the stress and I'm praying I'll be able to catch the train before it leaves the station.9
