Boss asks me to prefer deadlines over good engineering practice. Says meeting a deadline is always more important than building things the right way.
Son, when the company goes out of business due to hundreds of millions of dollars in losses due to shoddy engineering, do you want to be the one to go to the spouses of everyone who lost their job and say "your spouse lost his job because we didn't take a few more days to build the product right"?
Son, when the company's product blows up in a child's face like a Note 7 because of your shoddy engineering, do you want to go to the funeral and tell the parents "your child died because we didn't take a few more days to build the product right"?
Fuck your arbitrary deadlines. I prefer not allowing for so much grief and suffering to be on my soul.5 -
I started my first job with no degree and no real experience. It was a sink or swim kind of place. Six months in, I was working on a bunch of projects independently, then they hired a new junior developer, and told me it was my job to mentor him.
a lot of the time I knew what to do to get the job done, but I didn't know why. He always asked why... Learning something is one thing, teaching it is another. This guy was the best co-worker I've ever had because he pushed me to be much better while we learned together.2 -
Ever have a feeling that there is so many interesting stuff out there - Angular, React.js, TypeScript, Rust, ELM, FRP, Machine Learning, Neuronal Networks, Robotics, Category theory... But no way to ever figure out what are all those about? And there is too little time to even get a good grasp of any single one of those. IT seems to be like hydra - one learns one thing and 10 new concepts pop up in the meantime.4

When you are listening to music while coding and the music is on fire so you hit the same button on the keyboard several times to go with the beat 😂1

I recently got my first job ever as a developer. And I don't know how long the feeling will last; but I have to say it's an awesome feeling to get paid for what you love doing! I hope you guys share this feeling with me12

When you're a newbie at your work, fresh out of school and your company does not have a test server and the plus is your boss does all his coding via vim.
The sharpest learning curve and you quickly realize how much more learning is done after school.2 -
I really appreciate devs that aren't complete assholes when you admit ignorance and embrace failure. Be a teacher, not an asshole!9

When you ask me to estimate some project that is complex and you don't pay for an initial research process, my response will be full of assumptions.
I've kindly listed those assumptions for you, also sometimes referred to as Caveats.
When you don't read the assumptions and the issues arise outside of reasonable control - that means it's YOUR F'ING PROBLEM
