@AlmondSauce while the tools definitely exist, there are other, often more difficult barriers to breach.
Like getting everybody to use the same tool (or plug-in, whatever), agree on “standard” settings, etc. ... -
@RantSomeWhere IIRC, PowerShell sets some *NIX-friendly aliases on launch (dir -> ls, cls -> clear, etc)
Either that, or I had some module loaded -
Same here. I still don't know how to take compliments at work properly because I never feel like I'm actually doing good enough.
-
Nice pods 😬
Hope they've made your listening experience as convenient as they've made mine.
And thank God, a dark theme. -
Try using Gentoo. It won't seem as bad eventually...
-
Unfortunately this is often the case with many boards. 4xPCIe(8/16)? Sure. Modern graphics cards, though? I've almost thought they wouldn't fit when installing mine before.
TL;DR - Number of PCIe slots doesn't always match up with supported GPU count.
But yeah still sucks. Sorry man. -
Coworker: "There once was a student with a problem.
Then, the student discovered regex.
Now, the student had two problems."
In all fairness it usually has a chance at saving me some time... -
128??? I'm struggling to save space on a 500GB with Gentoo (w/i3wm). 128 sounds like hell.

Piezo...
*recalls piezo pressure sensor math and cries* -
Here's to hoping I will no longer need to warranty my ROG laptop soon....or finally upgrade.
Nice choice btw, ASUS & ROG FTW. -
02 FTW

Boy do I wish we had more engineers where I work. Too bad we just got some new guys and I have no clue when we'll be hiring for more... we have openings, but nothing for frontendy stuff right now. Bah. Need more engineers. Pretty much all but me and a few software engineers work from home twice a week and it's gets super boring in the office lol.
-
Boy does that look silly on iOS. (Shooting yourself with a squirt gun)
-
@intromatt oh for sure. A little more difficult when one of those is a product that is used with just about everything you sell, etc lol
But we deploy crap on Linux so the only time we have this "issue" is when we install it on employee computers, which are typically Windows outside of engineering. -
@intromatt Don't forget about legacy or in-house hardware :D one case of that at work.
Most annoying thing about it is it's not kernel mode (or whatever Windows needs) signed, so we have to disable driver verification every time it needs to be installed. Bitlocker makes that part even more exciting. -
This is me when I come in earlier than usual and forget about my alarms...
-
@intromatt oh God, no.
I'm starting to recall the pain of getting WLAN (+hostap) working on the Wandboard upgrades at work last year.
@simulate, I half retract my initial statement, at least for embedded systems. WiFi can be an absolute horror on Linux, depending on your circumstances. -
Gentoo user here and I haven't had many issues with (built-in) WiFi. Often times some things that cause issues on other distros become easier when you can recompile the kernel (eg NVIDIA), blablabla. Yes this can be done on other distros, it's just more "normal" to do it in Gentoo.
-
@sunfishcc yeah I should've made that more obvious, sorry. Was simply sharing for others that didn't know. I'm aware it's complete satire haha. Even has links to MDN JS docs on the bottom of the page, etc.
-
I've seen this at the office before. Except it was somebody's personal email and password.... for sending/receiving log files... in production code....
-
@suprano oh I figured. Maybe it's just me but I feel like that, if anything, really helps in those cases. People can do dumb things under stress (I know I'm certainly no exception - especially while coding), but it's not often that they apologize after they flare up, especially when IT/a "computer-specialist" needs to help. It's usually something like "rage, blame IT, and leave" etc.
-
I had never heard of this before but oh boy - http://vanilla-js.com/
This is great XD -
I remember meeting up with one of my friends at a local coffee shop once, and I have no clue how it happened, but we started talking to this senior lady there, and at some point she started complaining about how computers didn't make it easy enough to see everything they do.
She told us how she had tried to move/delete various [non-user] folders and they would just show back up, and so on, and we were just wondering how her computer was still functioning at all. -
@skqr Exactly my thoughts. Kudos to the guy on the other end for going so far as to apologize for it.
-
Yeah I'm with you. I know this is "devRant", but it feels like every other post I see is "F**K OTHER PEOPLE ARE STUPID"
It's not impossible (or difficult, for the most part) to rant without blowing up. -
I hope by "Auto Open" you mean "Maximize" and not "Launch". Otherwise, well.....
-
And here I am still locked out of Fidelity because I failed at setting up GNUCash (it really could be easier for many services....)

Similar experience:
Girl: "What kind of games do you program?"
Me: "no no, I'm a gamer _and_ and programmer"
*unmatches*
Tried to change my bio afterwards to prevent the same thing from happening. Not like it changes much in the end given how verbose it is. -
