TL:DR Company partner screws up and doesnt do job. I start new company and now able to make ends meet.
My friend and me started this company together. Our roles were defined. I would manage the development of stuff and he would manage getting the clients. I did my job. About a year into the company. He goes ahead and partners in another company. Normally I wouldnt bother, but this is when he stops getting clients for us. Our business drops 50% in the second year. He doesn't work but expects to be paid the same salary as me. I'm doing all the work for the clients while he wastes his time with the other company. He manages to make money doing stuff and buys a BMW, while I'm struggling to make rent.
Finally in Dec last year, I plan to start my own company. And i suddenly have lots of work which pays decently well. I'm looking to hire and am not as stressed with work any more.
Moral of the story: if you must partner, make sure your partner is fully invented in growing your company.3 -
True story.
Some clients (especially in India) don't want to pay, but they want everything to be implemented in the project.
Big data.... Check

They want all the buzz words that are buzzing to be put in your project and they want you to put it in the 'cloud', for which you have to pay.....10 -
Hey guys this is devrant, not 9gag or reddit. Please don't use it that way.
If I wanted a memes I would go to Imgur and 9gag.
Keep this about development issues only please.
Thanks.5 -

Has anyone who's running a start-up had to deal with email happy clients?
I just watched a thread of 14 emails be generated for sending a maintenance contract which was already agreed upon.
Most of the emails are "thanks for the reply........."
To which some one will reply " thanks for the reply.........1 -
My biggest challenge is moving from framework to framework or language to language.
It takes me a good day or day and a half to get used to it. I'll finally have a eureka moment and figure things out. But until then, it's quite hard and I end up questioning my competence. -
Client has a hand drawn logo. Which is really bad.
We build a website with the same concept.
Client keeps telling us the website doesn't look sophisticated enough.
How do I tell them it's the childish logo?8 -
As a company we have reduced the number of emails we send each other. We use slack and for the most part it is very good.
It's also very resource intensive and some computers we have tend to choke after a little while.
Does anyone know of any open source alternatives we could look at.
(slack is a little expensive too. We're a startup)4 -
I used my first computer at school when I was 12, a few years later, got a 486dx, then a pentium 3 and then a dual core and then a core 2 duo and then an i5k series computer in succession.
Learnt to code and build my first product on them. Game and watch movies.
Good times. -
Fun day at work.
Client sends me requirements over WhatsApp voice notes.
Says he can't send email because hes too tired.
His Requirements don't make sense.
I figured out what he wanted and then rewrite the requirements using simple language and less jargon.
Hes not happy. I reduced two paragraphs of his "requirements" to a single sentence which make more sense.
His voice notes seem like rambling.
Ugh.
He comes up with features for this webapp that cannot be tested unless you build the companion app which is coming up later.
Now he wants us to design the screens for the app which we will have to use our designer for.
Expensive. Considering most of his app is not completely thought out.
I have no idea what to do now.
We still haven't completed the requirements.1 -
It's raining in Chennai, India.
Flooding in quite a few areas.
The areas hit bad are where the IT companies have set up shop. More rain is expected .
If you know guys from here please check and see if they're OK. It was almost impossible to get back home from work for many people last night.
Uber was charging 600% more for a ride.
Hope you guys from Chennai are safe.8 -
Just lost two clients who were on retainer. Startup suddenly with cash flow problems.
I'm not sure what to do to fix this.

How often do you change your phones ?
I have a oneplus one which I bought when it came out.
And an iPhone 5s.6 -
Does anyone wake up in the middle of the night in a "eureka" moment. That's what happened last night. Then I overslept.6

One manager at the Client company tells us that unless we submit weekly timesheets we wont get paid.
We are not their employees, nor do we have an agreement with them for full time work.
" Whole thought process is to structure the engagement better ,so that we can implement better governance and provide better visibility."
Anyone understand what is being said above? Jargon.2 -
Client asks for website and budget very low and wants a form with dB. Think WordPress site is a solution. Build site.
Deliver site.
Client's IT team unable to deploy on server. They blame me for bad "code".
I have to go to their office and help them deploy on local machine using WAMP.
2 days and 100s of calls later, website installed on test server. Works fine.
All is well1 -
BPOS client sub contracts a website and wants a WordPress one. Creates a design based on a theme.
This particular theme has a demo page.
And when running it through pagespeed insights returns a score Of 29.
Pingdom score of grade D.
Halfway through "development" we get a complaint from BPOS that the site is returning a score of 49 and a Pingdom score of grade B.
Considering how bad the theme is and how optimized we got. I believe that this was a miracle.
The things we do to make a living. -
I'm trying out Linux, first installed Debian, then moved to Ubuntu.
Figured that I'd rather use a vm as my dev machine than mess with my main computer.
Quite nice. Though VirtualBox sometimes messes up.
Anyone have any suggestions for me?6 -
For those who knew, my computer crashed https://devrant.io/rants/625625/...
Now I have to set up my computer for ionic and angular and native script and whatever.
It's a bit tedious...
I'm lazy I like visual studio... All ready. -
So a client (BPOS) asks me to build a website for their client(let's call them A). So BPOS decides to 'design' the site. The design is alright but the components they want does not exist. I need to build everything custom. And the website takes a few months longer than estimated. Mainly because BPOS doesn't do any QA for 3 months. At the end of the last month as we near handoff, BPOS wakes up and starts to do QA which mainly consists of vague information like " change to gray" instead of color codes and "increase font size" instead of the actual size.
By this time A is utterly pissed off and wants to give development to someone else. They get in touch with me directly to work with after the hand off by BPOS.
It's so amusing that I need to be in a KT meeting with BPOS and A when BPOS is pushing for annual maintenance and A doesn't want to give it to them and they keep ignoring BPOS.
ALL the delays are because an "account manager" who works for BPOS went on a trip to Australia.3
