Any serious developer wouldn't even know what Ctrl + s is because they only use vim!!
-
@daarkfall now I feel like donuts
-
@rantOverflow I agree, the volume knob is too oversized. I hate it, it's too easy to use, especially when using a mouse, being able to turn the volume down so quick and easy is really shit, I wish they had some shitty buttons instead to make life harder.
Oh wait... that's stupid... much like your comment haha -
Mmmmmmnn blues just get me in the mood. I don't know what you're talking about, I switched to mechanical about 12 months ago and love it. Using daskeyboard
-
Gets me eryday!!
-
Ahh those were the days, playing total annihilation. Just isn't the same now
-
I think you have too much spare time
-
Who the fuck uses text editors. I ONLY use terminal. I just echo out to file. I can't believe there are so many pussies out there using bloody text editors. Real developers only use terminal and I'm not talking vim either.
-
@aaronm you mean the person that did it originally
-
Oh god, this really puts it in perspective. I knew Australia had shit internet. I pay $90 for 30Mbps and have to pay an extra $20 to get a speed boost which gets me up to 75Mbps. What a rip off
-
@dontbeevil I wasn't saying you were a juvenile shit. I was trying to say this whole conversation is and I see it constantly on SO and now devRant.
Its so childish, especially when people start talking about fan boys. Seriously, if you want to discuss something that is slightly relevant, go for it. No one gives a fuck if you use mac, Linux or windows.
Honestly I use each and every one of them and they each have their uses and strengths. Anyone who dismisses any one of them is ignorant -
@dontbeevil will you please just shut up. So sick of hearing this juvenile shit.
-
@linuxxx yep I was looking at it today and that was pretty much my thoughts about it. Haha good to have in reinforced.
-
@Krokoklemme haha yah but I swear whatever they say I did, I didn't do it!!
-
That is the dumbest shit I have ever heard. If you do anything outside of work, that is your property. Unless you are using company property to do it or you are doing it at work or on the clock at the time.
Apart from that anything you do in your own time is yours. As long as it is completely yours are you aren't using any company IP.
To think that somehow the company has rights to what you think in your own time is just ludicrous and wouldn't stand up in Court. It wouldn't even get to court.
I personally have non competes in my contract and need permission to take on work outside of the company. They can't stop me from doing personal projects though. They also can't stop me running my own business on the side (as long as it doesn't conflict with the company). -
Whoa whoa whoa. Not all Patricks are dumbarses.
-
I don't understand why people use any of those things. Do real debugging with xdebug.
-
@yusijs haha that's funny. Well you made it here in the end. I personally really enjoyed construction and think I'm much better off having done it, I think if I had have gone straight to dev it wouldn't have turned out as well, but I wouldn't go back now for anything. Such a better work/life balance now.
We all take different paths and I don't think any one is better then any other. I think doing something you enjoy is one of the most important things.
Good on you for continuing to search, I know I'm glad I did. -
@yusijs haha that's awesome I totally agree and am in a similar situation. I understand, I'm a Chippy (carpenter) by trade. Spent 10 years and wanted a career change
-
@doz87 saying that though. I find it difficult to retain that kind of stuff if you aren't using it regularly. I had to brush up on my math to complete the job.
I think it's worth learning advanced math if your interested it in, unless you have the need to use it though it will probably fade. -
@amsghwdp I was on a big project just over a year ago that was in the financial sector dealing with mortgages and loans, advanced math was used quite extensively through to deal with the calculation of loans and across finance products as well as complicated cash flows and long term strategies.
I think day to day for most jobs it doesn't apply but i think there are some sectors that it would be a big advantage if you understood that level or math to achieve the things they want. -
@matsaki95 haha I'm always interested in seeing what @linuxxx has to say
-
Don't beat yourself up about not knowing enough. Personally I think uni is just about getting a foundation, you aren't going to come out of it as a 'good dev', that takes real work experience.
I also think being a 'good dev' is very subjective, to me it's less about having all the head knowledge and more about being good at problem solving, being persistent, knowing where to go to find the answers and staying humble. If you tick those boxes then I would say you already are a 'good dev' and then the years of experience will fill you with greater knowledge to allow you to do your job more efficiently. -
@Joberror uhhh I'm not bitching. And I use both mac and windows. Maybe come down from your high perch there mate your acting like a tool
-
@Joberror I really don't care what the update is to be honest. If my os is working in its current version I see no reason to update.
-
@starless haha absolutely. My philosophy is if it ain't broke, why update.
-
@Joberror yeah I hear ya. I just love my macs, never skip a beat. Just love the reliability.
-
@GigabyteDX absolutely. I've tried windows and mac and personally for development mac shits all over windows. Everything works so much more naturally, I don't really understand the reasoning behind using windows.
I would be interested to hear some though? And something more intelligent than "because it's better" -
@fox8091 @nocgod @Phanta although slightly entertaining, you all need to calm the fuck down. I see what @nocgod is saying and think its probably a little over the top but agree with the principle. I think everyone should take a big piece of humility pie, I don't know what it is about a lot of developers that I meet/talk to especially on dev rant but this isn't a pissing contest, we all do the same job and we should support each other, one day we may even work together.
I really don't understand this mentality about showing off who was the top of their class, who is better then someone else, it's all bullshit. And I personally think if you need to come on here and spout that kind of thing, there is a reason for it and usually it means you're full of shit.
Real devs don't need to pump themselves up and they don't want to see/hear others do it. Take a pill and goto SO if you want to prove how great you are. -
Yep. I think we all have to learn that one the hard way at least once
