Awesome news @root!!! Congrats, I'm really happy for you. It'll be amazing, don't be worried dear ♥️

Ok code can become legacy very quickly if you don't test it, put devs that don't care on the team and let it all be guided by execs that think "if it works it's not broken". Pile up tech debt until there's no room to breathe.
I changed teams to escape from hell like described above exactly. I saw in the emails since Friday they have been losing a lot of revenue because the system times most the requests out and randomly fails performance tests. That affects k8s and the scheduler kills pods or restarts them 100s of times. All services downstream suffer. Massive severity of an incident. No one knows how to read the code and how to fix it. Previous lead allowed copy paste engineering and brute forcing changes so there we are. Happy not my problem anymore 🙂
I have been saying while on that team that this tech debt will bite our asses very badly one day but no one listened. So I fucked off 🤷♀️ -
I lied on my CV a lot to get my first dev job because my previous experience was playing against what I wanted. I mean I did learn super fast and had genuine interest in programming though.. so lying on your CV is not always that bad.
Your friend is making terrible choices that are gonna bite him in his ass soon. Guess you've done your part and need to tell him you won't be helping him anymore with solving problems at work 🤷 I would, anyway -
I think this phenomenon is strongly related to the USB stick insertion paradox.
-
@frogstair oh i think you misunderstood, I'm contributing already to one project, it's going good but I want to put my hands on more advanced features and I feel like I'm lacking some Go specific knowledge
-
Ohh Go. Any good (and checked) resources for advanced use? Currently digging some open source project in Go and I want to contribute with more advanced stuff
-
I unfollowed everyone and every page on Facebook a long time ago and my wall is empty, I log in every couple of weeks to catch up on messages.
Life's too short for that meaningless social media drama. Come talk to me in person if you want to make a statement and confront me. But if you do that kinda shit with posting emotional posts addressing everyone then ima ... Well ima do nothing cause I won't even see it 😅 -
ah no, i wont uninstall it. I have a strict "do not entertain this BS" rule which implies i painfully ignore all attempts to make it a discussion worthy topic unless I'm forced to. So i will continue speaking freely and ignore if someone tells me to stop.
They can escalate it to the fucking pope if they wish ima tell him to kiss my ass too -
@Jilano well I don't actually live in Amsterdam, literally the first city that came to my mind haha, I just don't share the real location in case I have to say shit about my colleagues / company 😋
Also, with meeting my friends I meant more like after all this crazy times are over :) don't actually do much meeting now -
Woa woaa - I'm no nerd!
Welcome aboard :)
Been there, done that! Don't listen to all the but's - seriously fuck it. Every job has it's downsides. Also right now take a note of all the people that doubt you so that they get the front seat watching 💪🏼 it'll be priceless in the future. -
Relatable
-
Wut, engineers are like the sassiest and most fun people out there 😄 what a pile of bullshit
-
@TheItalianGuy hell no. I already turned down Google and Facebook recruiters in the past a few times, the last time I did was actually last week with Google Zurich
I'm just not interested in joining a cult, I guess. Also when I turned down Facebook I said the reason was purely ethical so that they don't contact me again. Of course I worded it much nicer :) -
OP, I'll be the arse who kindaa agrees with not making unrelated changes.
Number one:
If one small unrelated change comes in then another does, in the next PR. And then two more from two other devs. And then after a while our PRs are half refactors and half of actual story implementations. That's not clean at all, let alone the fact that whoever will be reviewing the code will be wondering what's happening here.
Number two:
I've seen a couple of such "2 sec fixes" that were just added as a part of an unrelated story implementation that actually ended up breaking stuff. Safest is to revert right? But then you have to revert the whole functionality you've implemented together with the "2 sec fix".
I'd leave the code as is but I'd right away create a little ticket to implement the 2 sec fix, maybe even a branch of a branch and then rebase. If it's really a 2 sec fix it'll be a no brainer to review and merge.
I'm a purist.. I know. -
Bleh I'd rather bother all principals and all my dev friends then post on SO. SO is a read-only tool for me. Life's too short to deal with SO's self proclaimed 10x engineers
-
How was it? I want to do it too as a part of fighting the part of me that hates anything devops related.
-
@jmsfrg I had a couple of books including tech books I've been meaning to read and decided to see how many I can read in 6 months instead of using smartphone for pointless scrolls while I'm waiting / on the bus etc. The answer is 30 including 6 tech books so not bad. It gave me an awesome prep and a great boost for interviews now that I'm back actually
-
@rajj, actually we met before we were devs. I went first and it was me who convinced him to become a dev too. But yeah long story short I was stealing his beer at a metal gig. We were very young, very free and very much drunk. Just enjoying life really that's the best way to meet someone ☺️

@galileopy try it at 4900 masl. Whoever thinks it doesn't work is a fool or hasn't tried it at such insane altitude. But at sea level a tea, a candy or chewing has no effect on me really.
We need to fight the misconception that it gets you high though, cause it does not. It makes you sharp and helps with oxygen absorbing (apparently) so it's good for altitude problems. It makes you take those 5 more steps at 5000 masl but you don't really feel high. Oh and makes your lips tingly if you overdo it hehe
I chewed on and drank away coca leaves a lot in the past couple of months, we can probably speak of quantities in kgs by now 😅 had a coca mojito and also coca candy too. Coca mojito was as weird as it gets. Instead of mint you get coca leaves. We had it obviously in the late evening and I was tired and wired at the same time, drinking at altitude is no joke 😅 -
@galileopy sorry only catching up now. Paraguay wil have to wait until the next time. I'm planning a trip back to South America already so I'm a 100 percent sure next time I'm checking off Iguazú. I've seen everything there is to see from Cuba down to Patagonia along the Andes so I'm happy to leave the other side of the continent for the next time :)
-
@AlgoRythm ah no, no child nodes however platform(0) is now not empty so it's safe to ask for head 😂
-
Btw I hope your train shows up !!! My last comment could have sounded like I'm a dick haha. I'm moving to Berlin in two weeks myself but I think after living in Ireland for 10 years I'll be excited to see public transport arrive at all :P It'll be strange not to have to walk 1hr30 min to work at least once a week
-
Cute... In Ireland if the public transport doesn't show up it's up to you to figure out why and if the next one is coming at all or you need to take a taxi/walk.
There is no such word as "delayed" in a context of public transport in Ireland. Just the "arriving in" info doesn't change for 25 min and then disappears as if the transport arrived and left without you and it leaves you wondering "maybe I somehow really didn't notice it arrived..." -
I might shock you all but I only use wi-fi. Partially because I travel a lot and it costs a ton and also because it seems wasteful staring at the screen when I'm out and about enjoying the real world. I don't wanna miss out! I know, I'm weird like that... 😅
-
@telephantasm technically I'm now in El Calafate in Patagonia but I was in Arequipa at the time I took that pic. All remote! I didn't settle in Arequipa :) and the dream job I mentioned is actually in Berlin!
Also - I'm sure you're good enough for whatever you want next. If that's any consolation... I only learnt how to send messages over TCP with netcat last week ;-) by no means at all I'm any sort of a genius engineer. Pretty average who perhaps maybe tests a little bit more thorough than others. Totally proud to own it and admit that I don't know things, sometimes even pretty basic ones. Fuck that. I've a lifetime to learn. Besides I think being a know-it-all must be very boring. So yeah, you are in fact good enough for Arequipa and every other place you want to be!!! -
Awesome, best of luck! I knew a dev who worked at another company that does porn streaming. They operated under another name though probably to protect their employees and give them the benefit of "it was a video streaming company" when looking for their next job haha
Now that I think of it how awkward would it be for an interviewer to ask, say when you move in a couple of years "so tell me about your time at PornHub. what did you do there?" This is ASKING for bad puns..... -
@kescherRant well then I hate you more and publicly now. So here it goes!!! you... you... butt. 😭 It's the same model though yeah?
-
@kescherRant this is tragedy... The only thing I hate about the laptop. Had great specs for the price though :)
-
@Santaclauze yeah! But to went to the jungle from Bolivia - much cheaper and also I got to feel what it feels like to change 4000 m in altitude in 40 min 😁 superpower!

Castor oil, castor oil and castor oil!! Also no hair dryer, washing hair only once every three or four days and keeping your hair down as much as possible. I used to have hair down to my hips almost and doing this had them super healthy. I'm a woman though so this could be down to biology too. But really try castor oil out - and do wash your hands after using castor it unless you fancy a day off work :)
