Troubleshooting code...
Me: "ok cool did that fix it?"
Program: [same error]
Me: "alright, so can I break it harder?"
Program: [new error]
Me: "now we're getting somewhere!" 🎉2 -
When I hear something like "well, I didn't think it would be that hard so I gave it a shot and now I just need a bit of help..." I know I'm usually waking into a disaster. This would take me half the time if you didn't try it on your own. What a mess!3

"Can you confirm the program is ______?" Is a question you ask a developer when you have some semblance of what the fuck is happening. When you don't have the slightest clue don't try to impress me by guessing or pretending you didn't miss an entire set or requirements.

Hey remember that edge case we told you about months ago and you said ya "don't worry, it's an edge case" ya, we just found the edge and sailed right off it

I keep hearing about manual repetitive work that could be automated with software but for no specific reason, is not. For years I've been calling this "meatware" and yes in these cases you the developer is the meat3

The more frustrated I get with a project the less my commit messages are expressive about the code changes and the more the end up reflecting my disposition. I'm sorry to all future employees who may want to know what I did but hopefully you get a laugh.5

I usually try to break down what they are asking for into smaller parts. The tricky part is scoping them without granular details of how it will actually get done and thinking only about complexity. Then add up time and give the total a bucket size. 1-5 hrs 6-15, 16-30, 30+ etc. Turn around time is another matter but that's never predictable. By the time clients approve the quote availability is totally different.

If anyone is looking for a great tutorial on getting started with a docker cluster check out https://dockerswarm.rocks/
I had a 4 node cluster up on Digital Ocean with Traefik + Lets Encrypt, Prometheus, Portainer, Grafana all that good stuff in under 2 hours. Not much longer to test a basic WP and Next Cloud container with full SSL. Neat stuff. Just burning through $100 credit for testing but it's been fun5 -
I was probably about 5 when I got this. It took 8 AA batteries and all I knew was how to get it to do tic tac toe. All other games confused me but I loved it. I wanted more.1

Had to fix a small program that wrote a report to a file and was supposed to uploaded to FTP but kept sending error notices. For a week I had the FTP part commented out and just manually used filezilla every morning till I realized the config had an old password... Not a proud moment1

"Hey, listen. I have this thing that should have been done like, a month ago. I know that's not your fault but now it's your problem..."2
