I just had my very first salary negotiation in my entire life and now I just want to hide under my bed.
Why is it so damn painful!?
It’s not like I’m asking for sacks of money, but I also have to think about what allows me to have a place to live & what valuable skills I offer
Both parties should get an acceptable outcome right!?
Like there’s no insurance, no benefits.
Having this conversation so soon may have been a mistake. Fuck
I hate this feeling!
Ok wake me up in January24 -
Due to working from home I decided a few months back to invest the money I save instead of keeping it all in my bank account.
About 10-20% of it goes to a long term investing account and the rest into the one I manage actively.
The nice thing about homeoffice is that I can have a lunch break an hour later when the market opens and review my shit, then again checking up on it in the late evening before the market closed here.
Have been playing around with trading for years but never did it with patience and discipline.
After 3 months I managed to reach over 16% profit.
My account is small so it’s not a lot of money but I’m focusing on the % rather than the $ at the moment. It’s a start..
Anyway, thought I’ll share my progress with you guys as some of you probably invest as well..
Im exclusively swing trading, so holding my positions between 1-14 days with no leverage.

I had a question about a software concepts I didn't understand so I posted it to softwareengineering.stackexchange.com since stackoverflow would eat me for trying to ask for help with a concept.
I thought nothing was worse than stackoverflow...
I was wrong, in the first 2 minutes I got 2 downvotes and no comments why I got downvoted. I checked other posts...
All downvoted at least -3 and no comments why.
Congrats Software Engineering you stole the crown for most toxic community from stack5 -
Okay, this is MAJOR FUCKING BULLSHIT.
I understand variability of, dunno, 10, but 40?
The tests were ran on the same machine, one after another. What the fuck?9 -
Spent like 2 days trying to fix a problem that caused failing tests and outdated test lib...
But just realized I could just fix it with a simple hack... basically a test mode flag2 -
Look, I don't know why, but after sitting around doing nothing, I think he wants to kill me.
Send help.
I mean just look at him, staring right into your soul.8 -
Hey guys, I'm here to upvote quality content. I don't have much to rant, so take my support!
Been lurking for quite some time now =)11 -
I'm curious, is email campaigns such as 'constant contact' part of a devs job? new job wants me to be in charge of this and I could not think of a worse job I would like to do.
I don't even check my own email!
I hate social media and suck at posting anything besides random useless memes.
REALLY??! Email campaign????18 -

I wonder how come we don't have a developers' "uniform" in the avatar builder's "shirt" list...
developer's uniform == hoodie14 -
The interview I was so nervous about apparently went well. It’s a small ad company.
I was offered a month long “work trial” period.
Problem is I was caught off guard with discussing compensation & what I agreed to is less than half what the average dev makes in my state.
Like barely above min wage
I feel much less excited about this but this would be my first job in a loooong time.
I’m not sure how to feel but I think I have to at least try, but I feel taken advantage of already!
Is that bad? What would you guys do? How would you approach this before sending any signed commitments back?
Ugh!!!!!10 -
I made a thing.
A recent user threatened to "hack" me using "Tampermonkey"... and while that is silly, it did get me thinking about trying out some User Styles for the first time in a while.
So, I present to you rapscallions DarkTronRGB.
Three Dark Tron Style CSS User themes for devRant that work with Styler and Stylebot browser plug-ins.
Enjoy. Or don't. I don't care.

To my ex manager
you left to berlin, and left me to rot
my new lead sucks, i kid you not
it was ok if I slacked off, You used to be chill
But my new lead is uptight, he's on my list to kill
I wanna run errands in work hours, is that so bad?
was doing so for years, now i lost what i had
I cant drive in peace, coz i know he'd call
so i had to cancel plans to go to the mall
its like 10 to 6 is now constant work
I hate my new lead, he is such a jerk17 -
I've lost all my fucks, I gave them all away!
I'm so over everything today! I have an interview on Monday and I'm always super anxious not matter what it is. I hate caring so much about crap nobody gives any actual fucks about!
I'm tired of caring about crap, being a single parent looking for a job for so long now and dealing with all my responsibilities is BS
I'm sick and tired of everything today!!!!!!!!!!!!6 -
I was told there's gonna be:
- good salaries
- informal company setups with benefits
- lots of jobs available
- non-dev people look at you in amazement
- get to work on really interesting stuff
What I'm actually doing:
- carrying a team of people in uni because you're the only one who knows how to code
- deal with shitty uncommented legacy code at work
- be reminded that if you don't do something super-sophisticated you're easily replaceable
- spend unpaid overtime hours because you're the only one at your job that is on the issue (I see a pattern of being alone in a problem here)
- requestion all my career decisions
- cry and be stressed
- hate every minute of work, yet be stuck in it because it's a source of income that is flexible enough for me to be able to study full-time
So dunno man, I'm still waiting on what I've been told, people say there's lotsa money and satisfaction waiting for me after grinding through 5 years of high education, it'd better be worth it5 -
Ok what’s better than waking up to the sweet smell of fresh rain & my brewing coffee?
aaand this might not be such a bad Monday after all!9 -
So I have been looking for a job for so long now. I keep losing faith every single time I get the dreaded "thank you for taking the time to apply but we did not find a match for you at this time" I am having such a hard time staying optimistic!
I've seriously lived thru some fckd up last few years, my father died, my grandpa died and I didn't get to see either of them.
I filed for a divorce from the worst most scamming fraudulent person ever and have survived and have come out the other side, thankfully I am rid of him and all crappy people in my life. I did it all without a plan on how to make it all better, I just went with it by knowing I didn't know where I would end up but I sure as hell wasn't going to stay in that situation, nope, not a chance.
While going thru a contentious divorce and court dates, I was also learning to code--it kept me looking forward to something. Once I graduated and received my certificate . . . PANDEMIC.
Now I am competing for jobs with people with years of experience! how am I ever going to get a job in this type of situation?
I know this has to end sometime and I will eventually be able to get a job but seriously how do you stay optimistic with so many rejections non stop day after day?
this is horrible and I don't know what else to do. I'm glad I found this space for my rant.20 -
Soo I’ve been frustrated with my luck in finding a job, but I need to start working!
I have been thinking about starting my own web services (of some type) business.
I need a mentor, or a partner or just someone to talk about ideas with.
How does one go about finding someone like that?
BTW I know this isn’t a networking specific but I think it’s worth a shot.16 -
SUNDAYS ARE THE WORST!!
Normally it’s the weekend but recently it’s just so stressful!
It’s like you can’t even relax because you’re supposed to be preparing for the week ahead!
It doesn’t feel like the weekend anymore!
Why is planning and prioritizing
So MF Hard for me!?!!!!
Why did my brain cope with stress and trauma by simply checking out & spacing out!?
I got so good at it that I find it hard to bring my focus back—it takes soooo much effort to do what i need to do
I’m So Freaking TIRED.15 -
Why do people like hiring managers at companies seem to think that because you are paid to code you spend your spare time coding?
You don't expect a surgeon to operate all day then go home and randomly start cutting people up, so don't expect a code surgeon to spend all day coding to go clock off the start hacking away at shit either!10
