I have so many questions. Was the operating system sharing memory with your programs? Was it in some kind of firmware ROM?? I wish I could have experienced computers pre 2000s era. I started on Windows 98 as a 90s child so I missed the Wild West of computing.
-
Im unclear on your description of the programming. You mean to say there was no disk storage at all so instead of typing commands with ed, you had a manual with key combinations that you typed in liu of writing commands?

Welcome

I mean welcome to web development

Hey nice job, similar situation. Snagged a job I was semi qualified for in DevOps, did some fun interesting work, got promoted to “senior” after a year (with 3 years industry experience) and it’s been a ride. Excellent springboard for the next thing though

My partner works at an engineering firm with 9 9s. The R&D department trialed it, now production is adopting it. It’s been massively successful. She loves it. every other weekend is a “real” weekend she says. I think you make it work with prioritization.

Hi yes we have a PM who isn’t aligned with our strategy of “ do whatever the fuck the CTO is yelling about loudest without any questions”, I was hoping to put in a request for a PIP
-
😂 You are the dev/ops/database/chemist/cloud/anger team Gotham Inc. deserves.
Have you considered writing a book? I’ve subscribed to you for years and am endlessly impressed with your writing and regularly entertained with your wit. -
“Accidentally” 😉

I mainly come to stack overflow for cocktail recipes and this thread delivers.

Vim is better than Emacs! Wait, am I in the right room?
-
@bittersweet I read your rants religiously and I’m now waiting for your blacksmithing adventures update.

Make or break time

I mean on the other hand free experience. If it turns out you ARE good at the job then now you know.

I’m curious to hear the justification for an email address. I can’t think of a reason it’s needed. Why do you need anything other than a usage description? Why don’t you automatically send the crash report in the background immediately, and just allow the user to submit a description and no identifying information? What is the gain to you as a developer for gathering that data? It’s very likely your response rate will drop dramatically too.

Built a desktop with hackintosh compatible parts, took a wireless card from my job doing Apple repair out of a machine for recycling, ultimately didn’t do it. Stability. They do work but the rate of updates vs testing for a hackintosh means you’re basically stuck 1-2 OS versions behind and even a minor update threatens to brick your system. I own a MacBook Pro instead.
If you need a desktop Mac for video/image processing Mac Pro is a nice machine but way overpriced. Never made that decision because my work is centered on command line use and a laptop has enough kick for building containers. -
@lxmcf Former Apple tech here. We used to have special Apple data transfer boards for the 2016+ models. Since they made the inside one whole integrated piece it was a huge pain but they function. If you’re working for an AASP you should have all this equipment. If you’re at a third party shop or a business and the machine won’t boot (power issue etc) you’re SOL without an AASP.

How about a fourth option:
Look, word choice aside, no one writes this way. Fix it. -
Yes but now you have to melt it all and build a virus statue to our new gods

I doubt we will see a ban on deliveries, as much as that sucks for delivery people, it feels like the only way for others to properly isolate.
It’s much more likely that this will be prolonged and small businesses will essentially go under. We’re probably looking at the expansion of large companies to even larger companies. -
All you have to do is work with Windows Server and never support a web application . Bam. It’s really easy. Go do IT for 8 years then get a job at a company that writes software and you’ve got the makings of a useless sysadmin from an IT background
-
Oh shit me too. I just took a new job in a new city, moved here a month ago. Barely made a few friends and got a couch and now BAM work from home, stockpile groceries, don’t go outside
-
@Wisecrack Anyone with a math background knew what you meant. I’m not python literate though so I did have a moment of confusion. Interesting find.
-
That’s a beautiful pattern. Does it have any practical applications?

Sol is the best cheap s**t around. Makes Corona look like garbage.

DevOps and automation is the sweet spot of non development work with development pay and interesting mix of usually well documented tools
