Wtf is devrant++ ?! Is this really a thing?
-
@fzammetti This was an Australian company. We live in the Philippines. It's no surprising that not of this would come into light during a background check.
Not a lot of companies here do extensive background checks, if at all. Even Accenture--a company currently worth 190B USD--doesn't do extensive background checks here. -
@fzammetti Oh prepare to be gosh-fucking-darn-it-over-the-wall angry about this.
This happened in 2016. I only wrote about it now because I only recently found out about the whole story.
The only reason I found out is because this POS reached out to me on LinkedIn coz he's looking for a dev for their company.
Granted, this may just be some kind of automated messaging shit on LinkedIn but the fact remains that this human-shaped-shit-stain is still in the industry. UNFAZED by a fucking SEXUAL ASSAULT scandal and suing his former employer.
And thriving!
Like I said, this world makes no sense. -
Love it. Your story /and/ Scratch.
Introduced my son to Scratch when he was 6 (3 years ago) and he hasn't stopped since.
The one downside I find is that he doesn't seem keen on moving on to other languages/platforms 🥲 -
Wholesome af. Good read!

Here's this thread's summary:
OP just wanted to vent some frustration about colleagues who apparently brag about using vim.
OP feels vim is "garbage" and "old tech".
OP berates vi/vim users, not understanding we were actually together on this.
OP starts "bragging" about "using linux", where "linux = Ubuntu".
OP insists that vi/vim is "garbage tech" and that his preference of an IDE is better.
OP has now become the scum bag that he was ranting about.
OP tries to save face by saying that he just enjoys triggering the "apple fan boys" failing to realize that he was initially triggered by a joke he didn't get.
OP argues that devs using open source are "hypocrites and garbage".
OP has yet to post an actual argument on any of the stances he has taken, instead keeps calling people names and "haha uR s0 tr1gger3d.."
I think we can all agree this should be the end of it. Don't @ me. -
@rajadohare - I DO use vim, it works for me. You use VSCode? I don't care.
I DO use Arch, it makes dev work easier. You use Windows? I guess that /would/ be the obvious choice for you.
I DO use a landline, it's cheaper to make calls on them where I'm from. You use smart phones? I don't care.
I AM smarter than you. Unsubstantiated claim but it does seem to be the case. Oh you say you're smarter? I don't care.
I was clearly talking about people who complain without reason. Now, obviously, I assumed you met someone who was bragging about it. So I tried to poke some fun in and added the Arch joke.
Clearly, you were too angry or too dumb (or both) to have gotten it. So yeah, sit down and stfu, son. -
People who complain about people who vi for no reason in 2021 can go fuck themselves in the ass.
Did I mention I use Arch? -
Whoa. That started to put me into a real rabbit hole. I had to force myself to stop because I have work to do.
But now I know what I'll be doing this weekend. This is fascinating. Thanks. -
@C0D4 The thing about talking and a related ad coming up happened to me multiple times. The most recent one was a few ago when me and I my wife were talking about getting one of those small cycle pedal thingies. We were on our desks and after that chat, I get on Facebook and 2 mins later there's the ad.
I've always chalked it up to some crazy coincidence but you're implying it's not. How is this even possible? This is both fascinating and utterly horrifying at the same time. -
I didn't want to read the manga coz I really like the anime and don't want the story spoiled.. did not expect to see a beaten up Gojo in here XD.
Now I'm fucking intrigued. -
Ahem.
-
@devjesus Why would they not be allowed to keep the money? Assuming they seeded it out of their own pocket, I don't see how anyone could take it away from them.
-
You must not be asking in the right community. The one I've joined just ignores you XD
-
I'm curious. What did your failing script look like and what error were you getting?
-
@GiddyNaya I suppose this specific scenario is ridiculous but one place I worked at before actually had massage services brought in one particularly stressful week. They prepped one room for people who wanted full back massages and others got back and foot rubs on their desks.
Most of the lady masseuses were very easy on the eyes but they were dressed in uniforms and not like this. -
That sounds nice. How much are you taking? I wanna try it out.
We've been in quarantine for 18 months and the only exercise I get is during grocery runs (we have a small place and I can't go to the gym). So any supplements would be very welcome. -
@ThatPerlDeb I was brought in initially to setup a smoother deploy process before me they were deploying from their local machines. Of course there was a big presentation about testing and how the CI works.
CEO and CTO obviously wanted this to happen but not so much that their precious devs would be "hindered".
@hjk101 - master branch already is protected but maintainers still have force push access to it. The removal of this access (or better yet, demoting their access to developer) is what I have been lobbying for.
I (sincerely) like how everyone here thinks I need advice, but no, this was just a rant. -
@Voxera On gitlab they still don't have granular control on force pushes. So it's either enabled or disabled.
These guys are all set to have maintainer access anyway so they'd still have the option to disable it. And in the six months I'm been working with this team, I've brought this up 3 times, each time they were given a pass to keep it enabled.
When I started there was no CI and no tests. I built the CI, I built the foundation for the test suites (and A LOT of the actual unit tests), and I have also spent hours educating these fools on TDD even when I'm never one for presentations.
I think it's safe to say I've done all I could for this team. I'll keep bringing this up on retro but I'm done doing any more than that. -
@Lyniven Unfortunately not blocked, I've brought this up with their CEO multiple times and the devs keep bringing up bs cases where maintainer access is needed to make them "work faster".
They're pretty tight knit so he keeps giving them a pass. It's all political bullshit which I don't want to get into as they are not worth the stress. -
@Azlon Lulz. What do you think I wanted to get on that call for?
-
Being an asshole at the right moments is a life skill everyone should learn.
-
@C0D4 - I only use VSCode on occasion but I'm pretty sure you can just right-click the sidebar and "Move to right side" or something.
I don't have it currently installed so I can't check but I'm 80% sure it's something like that =) -
BONUS. I remember I already !ranted about this guy here:
https://devrant.com/rants/2350853/...
Incredibly humble and just an all around awesome guy through and through. -
@SortOfTested - did this ever take off?
-
@alexbrooklyn Seriously. I love that I've been spending a lot of time with my kid (WFH since April of last year) but, man, after the 100th, "Dad look at this, it's where Spongebob does something ridiculous" it gets /a little/ distracting.
I mean, to be fair, Spongebob does a lot of ridiculous things xD -
@Hazarth
1. Remove commented code
2. Merge to master
3. 2nd dev rebase -i his working branch
4. Conflict!!
5. Add commented code back
6. Commit
7. Merge back to master
TADA! >.< -
Lemme pull out my sextant and solve that for yah.
-
What are you talking about? They /are/ the same.
-
> might as well drink myself into a coma.
I'm 99% sure you're just saying this. But on that 1% off-chance, please don't. Seriously.
