Even though I’ve been working through a C# book about WinForms, which I’m half way done with, I still don’t feel like I’m working productively and I hate the negative feeling it’s giving me.
It’s going to sound stupid but it’s making me feel like I’m not spending enough time programming even though I’ve been programming quite a bit this week. I mean the small apps aren’t practical they’re just for learning how it all works but still. Im not reading the book for learning the programming logic it’s for the WinForms knowledge.
I think it’s just that I want to make progress on my main project and just have a 4+ hour coding session.19 -
Somebody tell JetBrains that government-funded projects that are publicly available and free are also FOSS and shouldn't be exempt from free licenses dammit9

Coworker wrote a nice package and put it on Github, to share with other departments.
I link his package on our company Slack, mentioning a team, with text "What do you think of this one? Is it usable for you guys?"
Next thing I know I have to explain to an executive why I'm "posting pictures of seductive cartoon girls in company chat with disrespectful commentary"
It linked the Github profile picture of the developer in Slack. A fully clothed anime girl, nothing particularly lewd about it.
But I like stabbing back a bit, and confusing the fuck out of people in suits:
"Hate to say it, but a good majority of all the code the company runs on, is written by people known as weebs, who use their so called waifus as their GitHub profile picture. It is very common for open source Javascript packages, but since we recruited 50 extra devs it now also happens internally. It's not my thing either sir, but I'm afraid we have to embrace it... "
"But what about our female devs? What about Joanna, she's in your team? We have to think of diversity! Our investors are really in to diversity, we can't have a bro culture!"
"Sir, with all due respect, we have super diverse teams without even trying. The problem is... they're all millennials. They grew up on weird memes... and are probably ten steps further in embracing diversity compared to the rest of the company."
"Also, Joanna is the one who drew this particular picture. She's charging a €15 commission for profile pictures... Do you want one of your fursona, sir?"
"What is that?"
"Uh... nevermind. Let's... let's not go there"48 -
If you are in the US how are you preparing for the next pending recession?
I am thinking about staying at my low paying but stable job where they have never done massive layoffs because they are not publically traded.
Anyone else?3 -
The sad day has come people... Anyone who knows me; knows that python and PHP are not my favourite of things...
But I've decided to try and work towards getting a Dev position at my current work place... That required PHP and python knowledge
Gonna be honest, better pay but have to use PHP and python or kill myself is a very tough choice...18 -
When you got to get through the swarm of elective classes to get to the meat of the bones in a Software Development degree 😤
How many times do we need to take Math in order to get across that we only use like 1/4 of what is actually thought and apply it to IRL scenarios?!
My FASFA is gonna run dry at this rate and I just wanna start these Software Development classes already 🙄😭🙏1 -
Productive day!
Rewrote an intern's feature and briefly explained how/why
Gave intern a choice of projects, and explained them
Removed two unused models, one unused route
Dried up two views into a partial
Redesigned said partial
Tested validation edge cases (ex: Jan 10nd, 101bc)
Fixed an api
Simplified three models
Added scheduling and platform restriction to a feature
Le wild bug appears: a user with negative xp!?
Wrote a migration to expand players' max xp to 2^64-1 because a certain legacy game gives it away like my ex-boss makes promises. Chewed at devs, but they're all long gone so :/
Won two games of pool
Browsed devRant
Busy day, and all of this while falling asleep! 😊
I'm quite proud of myself today.16 -
I actually lent a girl an umbrella yesterday which takes the total number of girls I've made wet this year to -1.12

Life of Boris, a youtube chanel of a slav guy that makes random stuff (and some delicious russian recipes 😋) uploaded this video few hours ago.
I watched it, and I didn’t expect the video to be an actual Python tutorial 😂 I loved it!
What do you think?
P.D. I hope this is not necessary, but I remind you that Life of Boris is not a programming channel, please don’t be too strict, it’s just entretainment9 -
I was pulling background data from a job in PowerShell, and it kept coming up short from the same, final section of data that I just KNEW should be there.
Fiddled with the primary application for hours... HOURS! Then, I checked the log. There it was in all its Glory, tee'd out to the log during job execution.
What. The. Shit.
So, it seems that, since I was asynchronously pulling data in a loop keyed to the job status and had inserted a little sleep statement in the wrong place, I'd been missing the last second's worth of data. You just couldn't tell most of the time.
Nice.
5 minutes later it was working fine with a new loop/control structure. Jesus.1 -
So, you ask me for a quote. You know nothing about the technology or the problem, but you think the quote is too high.
On what fucking basis are you assessing the quote? On the number of words? Font? Whether your spouse/cat hates you (both do). Basically, whatever I said, you'd have said it was too high, right?
Fuckwit.
Next time *you* tell *me* how much you have to spend and I'll tell you what you can get for your budget.
Maybe a coffee and a small cake.
Don't fucking call me again.2 -
For fucks sake...
If it is a new feature, out of scope for the next release ...
It is OUT OF SCOPE FOR THE NEXT RELEASE, MKAY?????4 -
How to block productivity:
I am currently a working student at a huge corporation and tasked to write some smallish java applications. Nothing unusual.
To actually be able to write and compile java programs I need a JDK.
Except that the last corporate update for java removed my jdk and left me with only a jre. It so happened that my admin rights ran out.
To be able to install a new jdk, I need elevated rights, which I need to request. The fucking problem is nobody of my department, who I could talk to, is here or online to accept the request.
Guess who is now sitting in front of his dysfunctional dev environment :/12 -
I've discovered there's two sections of devRant:
- Individuals in the workforce fed up with /r/programmerhumor and who hate Twitter
- Teens with a superiority complex, no friends, and acne12 -
Today I discovered by myself that...
...in a shell...
...when entering a password (e.g. ssh)...
...and you make a typo... 🤦♂️
...you don't need to smack that backspace key like a maniac! You can just use the clear line shortcut: control+U (^U). This clears all input to the left of your cursor and this also works for passwords.26 -
Mgmt: We will need you to work on Saturday
Me: I'm afraid I can't, I have plans that cannot be rescheduled.
Mgmt: Then please call your coleague out of vacation. Treat this as super urgent.
Me: I do not feel comfortable calling him out as, as you know, he is on leave (family emergencies) and it is a weekend. I do not think it would be ethical to do so either.
Mgmt: *crickets chirping in my mailbox*
Me: *Updating my LinkedIn*6
