i am too young and want to understand this: what's with tip culture?
its one of those things that i saw my parents and other people do and started doing the same but don't fully understand.

why do we need to 'always' tip the people who serve us? a waiter has a job to go on each table to take order, bring it when ready and take cash. i know that's a service that i should be grateful for, and i could showy gratitude with a tip, but isn't it same as the actual job for which they are being paid a salary?

same with a barber. same with a car repair guy. i don't understand why some professions have a variable gratitude money as one of the ctc components?

    tip culture:

it's the glorification of an economic philosophy that says "not paying your employees a living wage for their work is okay", while offloading the blame of the situation "waiters don't have enough money" onto you.

luckily, i live in a country where waiters _do_ get a living wage by default. so the meaning of tipping is not "i feel obliged to pay to keep you alive", but instead "thanks, you did a _great_ job beyond my expectations"

Almost as Louis Rossmann said: if someone does not offer a value over the required service to me, why should I give excess value in return?

Tip culture is when people say they can handle big d but actually can't so just manage the tip.

You must have lucky genes if your parents are giving the tip to everyone

    You don't

Often places pocket the tip and don't even pay it out

I had a pizza driver, after the pizza place increased the delivery charge twice in 3 months, beg me for a tip. He said they don't even pay his gas

My recommendation is to just never go anywhere that wants tips

Some countries they can pay them far below minimum wage if they say they get tips, but from friends working these jobs they don't actually get the tip it goes into a mutual pot and then the boss does whatever he wants with it. That's why grocery stores say you must report all tips and etc (the store will take it from you, after my friend helped a grandma and were given 100$ and the store just took it from them the end)

Taxes-wise tips are also hella taxed

Tips are bad. It also makes servers really terrible... They're always desperate and no longer full humans, their eyes are all blank and their souls flat, they cease to see

Unless you're charming and work at bar, those people are the reason. Make 120k+
