I fucking hate people who think Eclipse is the only IDE out there for Java development, stop being so conservative and get out of the comfortable old rusty editor..!

I use IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate on a daily basis but tomorrow I will have my Matura exam on a clean Eclipse installation and will be writing Java 8 without an Internet connection. Also, MySQL, having just mycli and no documentation for that one (I've downloaded javadoc).

Also, couldn't get Vrapper to work in Neon!

Worked on eclipse, wodked on inteliJ. also some others like netbeans and jcreator.
inteliJ is better but not by much.
I'm probably biased because I jump between projects so much.

Intellij isn't better.its the best 😁

@franga2000 eclipse is free. And to be honest it has many problems regarding performance. But this is easy to acknowledge if you didn't pay for it.
If you paid for the IntelliJ ultimate chances are that you don't want to see the problems.
And yes it has problems. I see this on daily basis when working with it.
But I'm an IntelliJ fanboy nevertheless an think it's far superior regarding refactoring and productivity.
But that doesn't make eclipse a bad IDE.

@deekay I agree they both have their strengths and weaknesses.
And I think we can all agree that either of them is much better than Netbeans.

When I was first introduced to coding, we learned Java, and the recommended ide was eclipse. A semester later I found intellij and tried to introduce it to my friends. However, all they said was "but he said use eclipse". It was at that moment I think those people are idiots. No offense, it's just my real thoughts.

Used both. They don't seem that much different tbh.

@Krokoklemme only for non commercial development. And you don't get Enterprise features like spring support. (There could also be a full fledged student variant, but also non commercial)

In some companies yes.
Additionally you can't use the free version for freelance activity either. Because that's also commercial.
You can only do free stuff with the free version.
And since there are many features missing I personally don't consider the free IntelliJ version an alternative to eclipse.

I used to use Eclipse for Java. Recently I started doing Android development in Android Studio. Intelij feels better organized but I'm not used to the shortcuts, too lazy to configure them.

Android studio on Ubuntu 14.04 was VERY laggy with AMD Catalyst drivers. But on Ubuntu 16.04 it's good. But I think Eclipse still felt faster and I liked the native UI.

So I think Intelij is better overall, bit slower, uses more RAM. The UI is organized in a sane manner as opposed to Eclipse where you can never find what you are looking for.
