My biggest regret is excessive, ignorant use of the `Shadows` keyword in a big vb.net app. That's not how you do inheritance.
It's been almost 10 years, and I still cringe every time I think about it.2 -
Not a prank, per se, but I type using the Dvorak layout. It's hilarious to watch people's confounded reaction as they type, expecting QWERTY output. It never gets old.1
-
So, when counting physical objects, my 4 year old daughter keeps starting at "zero." 🤓
It's the weirdest thing, and I've even tried to discourage it. But, hey, she uses it correctly...so, I'll just roll with it.3 -
That feeling when:
You realize you've spent the last 10 minutes typing feverishly while hunched-over your chair... instead of sitting in it, like a normal person.1 -
Guys. Seriously. Take this banner down. I kind of cared -- a WHOLE YEAR AGO.
This isn't the place of modern front end dev. You're obsolete. (This is almost as bad as the Angular 2 rollout!)22 -
Fingers -- what are you doing? You don't need the extra typing practice. Just use copy+paste already!
-
Hands down, my favorite part being a dev the HUGE range of industries I can apply my craft to.
In 10 years, I've bounced from structural engineering, to vision accessibility, to healthcare, to eCommerce. All from the comfort of my developer's keyboard.
While this isn't necessarily unique to the dev role, it's the spice of life that keeps my mind to young.2 -
The overhead on my JS projects is killing me. Today, I went to implement a simple feature on a project I haven't touched in a few weeks. I wasted 80% of my time on mindless setup crap.
- "Ooh, a simple new feature to implement. Let's get crackin'!"
- update 1st party lib
- ....hmm, better update node modules
- and Typescript typings while I'm at it
- "ugh yeah," revert one node module to outdated version because of that one weird proxy bug
- remove dead tsd references
- fix TS "errors" generated by new typings
- fix bug in 1st party lib
- clean up some files because the linter is nagging me
- pee
- change 6 lines of code <-- the work
- commit!3 -
You know you're a web dev when...
you consider not buying pizza just because the ordering website appears to use global jQuery selectors. 😣7 -
So I just heard that the JS Air podcast is going off air in November 😕
Can anyone suggest some other dev-related podcasts?6 -
Booted up my Windows VM today. I was nearly able to read an email before this happened.
Some things never change...4 -
Chrome Helper is sucking up 100℅ CPU. Again. Why oh why oh why oh why?
It's 5 o'clock on a Friday... I'm calling it quits. -
I get this weird itchy, antsy feeling when in the midst of doing a tedious, but precise work. Like pixel-perfect mouse operations or keyboard-intensive code refactoring.
Please tell me I'm not alone in this. -
So, I just swatted a huge bug out of the air using my work iPad. Because it was the closest thing handy. I'm pretty sure that's not why they bought me the thing...2

Hour 0: "Ugh, this sucks. What was I thinking? Trash it!"
Hour 2: "There we go, much better. Just a few kinks to work out..."
Hour 6: "Alright, that'll do. ...Wait, that's almost identical to what I started with!" 😕 -

ugh I just wasted an hour of my life on `tar`. Unzip, edit file, rezip. Seriously. How hard can that be? And no DSM, "invalid file format" doesn't do crap for helping me debug.
(I know, tar is the butt of a lot of memes around here, but it's legitimately frustrating.) -

This week was probably the most creative, focused, and productive one I've had all year. Feels good.
3-day weekend, here I come!1 -
My favorite part of devRant is that I always feel compelled to [read more]. This is real life. Sometimes a proper rant can't be summed up in a witty phrase or two.1
-
I just came across some code I wrote a year ago that I don't entirely hate.
I'm legitimately a bit worried.2 -
Rebuttal to all these beautiful wiring closet shots. This was taken at my first internship in 2002. As green as I was, I still knew this was awful.
(Pardon the low fidelity; it's a snap of a 14 year old printout!)4 -
Today I tried eating lunch NOT starting at a screen. It lasted all of about 5 minutes. 😞
Need to unplug.3 -
Me, inside: "I want to go hiking! Enjoy the great outdoors!"
Me, outside: "I should start a new programming project! [mind wanders...]" -
Loving the ++ / -- buttons! I was happy to see that change rolled out this morning.
Keep up the great work guys!1
