A idea on the matter from the Pragmatic Programmer: if you write code that nobody else understands you won't yourself understand it after few weeks. It's not a sprit, but a marathon.

By describing things as dumb as possible you decrease your OWN approach time to the code you are working on. If it's obfuscated by magic numbers it takes you x amount of time everytime you sit down to work on the piece. Declaration of variables/methods/functions and naming conventions have the sole purpose of unobfuscating. That's why int a, int b is bad what you are practically doing.

I agree with the Prof. Don't make this a question of misstatement but a chance to learn. Make it as dumb and as simple as possible everytime. That is the key to making the marathon.

I did a side project like that to track coffee machine usage with an Android tablet using openCV. Recognize a human shape, cut out the head and start generating reference DB for recognition. At some point it became self improving and once it got good enough it started greeting people and giving out funny stats on coffee consumption. =D

I use notepad++ to store temporary notes/stuff without saving. Just open up a new tab type/paste and it's still there when you fire it up again. Also encoding changes are a breeze. Everyday tool and loving it.
