The purpose is to normalize copyright infringement.

@retoor A number of Linux apps come without .desktop files and require you to make your own, it’s one of the reasons Linux is so unpopular as a laptop/desktop OS.
-
@retoor Literally every Linux user who uses a desktop environment, instead of launching all apps with the terminal, uses .desktop files, otherwise your Activities screen/Start menu would be empty.
-
@dissolvedgirl For books, the purpose is to support the author by putting them on the bestseller list before it comes out. Bookstores use preorder counts to determine how many physical copies to stock at release.
-
If you have a very slow Internet connection, or you are planning to travel somewhere with worse Internet, preordering makes sense because it allows you to download the game in advance, and then it’s decrypted on release.
-
@nosoup4u I think we should chase after Microsoft, the Free Software Foundation and the EU for pushing insecure software, rather than individual hackers.
-
Fellow Mario + Strange Planet fan! 😍
-
Bill Gates never gave Windows away for free, he just coerced the manufacturers into using it over superior alternatives like BeOS, OS/2 etc.
-
Bill Gates demolished both the computer and medical industries. One of the evilest criminals alive.
-
Kagi (paid) or Brave (free)
-
@lungdart Install Norton in VirtualBox 😂
-
@lungdart You can install ClamAV. Sophos is for Linux as well but it's only intended for servers.
-
So in your world, if Microsoft assassinates Shigeru Miyamoto, they get to make fake Mario games.
-
@dontbeevil I had a Surface and it was every bit as unreliable as any other Windows PC. Why do you worship Microsoft?
-
@jestdotty In the future, yes, but today's AI's have no understanding, and thus no knowledge, and thus no capability of creating something actually new. It's just a trick to justify piracy by rebranding it as AI.
-
@jestdotty No, you added other people's code to your knowledge and make new code based on that knowledge. Today's ”AI” just copies snippets, even passwords people left in their repo's. This is clear copyright infringement.
-
@jestdotty Yes, today's idea of AI is stealing. It doesn't learn and produce something original, it just copies patterns from actual original art. This is copyright infringement.
@aviophile Copyright is ownership of work, not ideas. You're confused with patents, which are controversial, unlike copyright. -
@jestdotty I agree that such contracts shouldn't be legal. I fail to see how the existence of them justifies stealing though.
-
@jestdotty If someone else has copyright and you don't, that's because they created something and you didn't.
-
Why not just use Firefox or any of the many forks of Chrome that are available on Android?
-
@asgs Still? It's easily the most popular Linux distro on laptops, and for the most part it's just as capable as any other distro now.
-
@cuddlyogre Then use a Chromebook... Bill Gates destroyed most of the options we should have had, but it helps if you don't outright dismiss the options we do have for no real reason.
-
@cuddlyogre It hasn't changed. I'd wait for Windows 12 releasing next year before wasting any more time on it. For the least troublesome OS, I recommend you just get used to the interface of Mac OS; or get a Chromebook as Chrome OS can do anything any other Linux distro can now, thanks to Crostini.
-
Never coming. I mean, they just released "Counter-Strike 2" as if no games without in-app purchases existed.
-
Legitimately an improvement though. Linux has a tentency to just give an untroubleshootable black screen.
-
How do you think it has to do with capitalism?
-
@cuddlyogre You can install Bash and several of the same terminal emulators as on Linux on Mac OS.
-
Not doing Windows development probably helps to avoid this.
-
The fact that HTML5 can do this at all, is why Opera and Microsoft gave up on their web engines and developing a new engine is almost impossible.
-
I don't understand why machines like this run Windows. I know the Enterprise version can probably be configured to not restart for updates in the middle of cutting things, but still.
