why not just fix it 😐
-
depends on the path you want to take.
easy one: over recruiters. the get a cut out of every hour you bill, they provide you with clients.
pro: easy start
con: dependent, not max. pay, you're not recognized as a company
hard one: build customers on your own.
for pro and con switch above ones.
for info on how to get started with that: internet is flooded with that :D -

@waldz why not trade? 300k saved for your week of holiday + a raise.

how we learn new technology?
by getting our hands dirty.
i personally do not make notes, i make repos. imho practicing something makes you master a topic.
if taking notes help you, write a readme on your repos along with a "how to work with this shit" section. -
this reminds me of the time we introduced //WHENTIME
those comments are still lying around till this day 🤣 -

@b2plane regarding the scaling topic: what exactly is the issue? the one time setup?
if yes, you can write a discord bot which creates the structure when a new client needs to be added -
i do not know why, but while reading your rant i was thinking about something like this:
"somehow the cooling system in our pyramid does not work anymore. can you fix that? it's all documented with a lot of pictures" -
Thank you for your answers :)
I learned that I need to clarify "legacy" for myself.
While writing the question, I was thinking about things like
- outdated frameworks
- bad (unmaintainable) architecture
- growing technical debt
- not following/ not even having code style guidelines
...and so on..
and those things do not summarize under "legacy" but more like "acummulated bad descisions without realizing the direction in which the whole thing is going to" -
honorable mentions:
"OpenAI hates this trick"
"9/10 dentists recommend using AI" -
invite both for a showdown 😐
-
technically speaking it's possible. I mean, why not?
There are things like politics and decreasing human intelligence that will most likely prevent it, but let us just take that aside and imagine us humans would be competent.
So what happens if humanity reaches that state?
There will be an increasing number of humans. In the long run, our planet will go out of resources. Even if we manage to get that food thing managed, there will be issues in terms of space and rare metals and things like that. It's just a scaling issue.
Would need to manage terraforming until then and do some interplanentary shit. -

god I love my pihole xD never experienced such bullshit.

making complex things simple is such a desirable skill
-
yes.
why?
I get bored real fast and I am curious of what I can archieve. I also like to build stuff. -
generally not less than 60$/h.
you need health insurance and other insurances. you have expenses. and you need to take into account non billable hours (like aquisition, vacancy and shit like that). you also want to take savings into account and you have cost of living.
do not make the mistake to throw out some random number which "feels okayish". You're a programmer. do the maths.
there's a lot of resources on how to price as a freelancer (for those who work on an hourly basis).
do not confuse your employee rate with your freelancer rate. those are two completely different things.
and yes, they may not pay you directly. but imagine them telling another company "hey, I found this very cheap dev" and company b approaches you. good luck pricing that one appropriately. -
if you can affort to switch places, do.
working in a low quality environment hurts your skillset and therefore your relevance on the market (in the long run). -
why dafuq have I never heard of that :D
now I have to educate myself on that. -
I took a deep breath and fought back. Told C and D that I told them how things would go and questioned their capabilities in that field.
I went to our manager and told him the complete story. I requested that C will not come to this company ever again and that I would not build a team with D ever again. I also requested that I get the project and that D should have nothing to do with that anymore, else I would resign.
In the end I got what I wanted. D was more and more isolated after that. Turned out he made moves like that in the past. -
Well, I fixed their shit and made everything work before they came back. They looked at what I did and literally said: "Why didn't you tell us earlier? Are you aware of the costs that you produced by letting us dig in the dark the whole time?"
I was so stunned in that moment. Because I literally told them the day before and they just ignored me. I was so fucking angry, coult not even get a word out -
there was this one time where we needed to implement some feature.
a consultant from software vendors company came to guide us. it as the consultant, a colleague and me working on the project.
the consultant (C) clearly had little to no experience in what was required. my colleague was a retard and a complete dickhead (so let's refer to him D)
Project started, we 3 where in a room to start work. C came up with a plan. D agreed. I disagreed and told them it would fail. They responded with something like "you don't know shit, just let us do". so I let them. Just sat there and watch them fail. The whole day.
Next day I told them "you are getting it wrong. I can fix this in about a coffee break". They said "Okay then Do it if you're so smart. We get a coffee and when we come back, we'll see!" -
they prodive the ability to format a message and insert code snippets. if you donthwt you get syntax highlighting and you do not have that issue.
I also enjoyed what you described, with a colleague sending yaml. it was a nightmare 😅 -
an easy solution could be to set up auto reply asking to fill an online form for recruiting inqueries.
create a form that fits your needs.
IF they even fill the form (filter one) you can come back to those that fill in relevant stuff (filter 2).
I think that may actually work - or not, just a thought 😅 -
@nachocode users 😓
-
why not ask them to provide the link if wp-admin does not work?
-
"in order to answer that question I would need to get an exact picture of the requirements. Just throwing out random numbers would be unprofessional."
-
Question 1: step back
Question 2: Changed Jobs 3 times prior to self employment. And every time a big reason was that I could not evolve like I intended to anymore -
i use vs code, but just as a text editor - as it is advertised as this. and it's good for editing text imho.
