That's sucks man. Pisses me off how govt can just wake up with a policy and screw everyone over. It has happened times without number in Nigeria's tech space. Gokada and co comes to mind. Keep the spirits up bro, you will get something better soon.
-
@monkeyboy, the beauty of being a dev... :)
-
I am in the process of doing same for our web api, and console apps. Just finished the EF core part. And moving to the others. Really excited to see it in action.
-
Things like this happen when the initial lead developer and team did not put any process at all in place and or did not enforce the ones put in place.
I was the only developer at my company for 3 years. I was a junior and hence no one to look up to. But I read a hell lot of blogs and joined communities like devrant. With that I started to put some process in place.
I now lead to other developers and I enforce the processes that we use.
When the other devs ask why we do something in a certain way, I explain to them and also ask if they think there is a better way and we debate which way is better logically and adopt that.
But, I make sure it is enforced for EVERYONE including me.
They call me a 'dictator' (jokingly of course) but I would rather that than suffer down the line from the issues that would result from everyone just working randomly and writing 'shitty' code just because it works..
You can rebel by start putting some things in place and nicely explaining why you do it. -
Async logging.....that codebase must be a maintenance hell
-
@heyheni My friend meant office spaces not the office product. Which is also not new anyway
-
The old: monolith asp.net webforms with sql queries hard coded. Js in the aspx files. A total maintenance hell I inherited and abused even further. I was the only dev for a long time doing web, desktop and mobile with no process whatsoever.
The new: asp.net core with EF core ORM. Separated into separate layers.(no containers yet). Coding guidelines, code reviews e.t.c I now lead two other devs and I am implementing a process.
The old one still gives me nightmares but in a few months migrations would be done.
This is the benefits of joining communities such as devrant especially if you are the only dev. I learnt a lot from this place.
Thanks to you all -

@mundo03 Not claiming to be better than them. Notice the conversation is with a friend who by the way is also a dev and better than me at it than I am.
-
@Maer Yeah, you are right. Just as @Nanos said sometimes we ignore the luck factor (for those who believe in it)
-
No arguments there @Nanos. I just get tired of hearing all these ideas by many people who can't commit to simple things not to talk of taking an idea to a viable stage. They all watch Social Network, hear the success stories (conveniently ignoring the ones not successful) and all of a sudden they have an idea.

He his telling now how to find cmd. Just told him I would do that.
-
Moral of the story, don't be like Bob
-
Agree with most of your point, but the part where you "shitty 3rd world countries" . Really?
-
Just another marketing gimmick
-
Lucky you @dfox. I dream of this every time I commute to work. Working towards actualising that dream though

Wait until the next two models are released and your starts slowing down. Then you would really hate them.
-
This rant is getting heated up. You guys might wannna take a chill pill. Argue constructively and not take thing personal please. I would hate to have to use the -- button for offensive comments
-
I quite agree with what @simeg, and @starless said. Because you haven't experienced it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Where I am from, you don't get see many female developers though this being addressed. I believe to stop it, there must be effort from everyone. I was once at a tech meetup where someone was making what I would consider a sexist joke. I told them that it was sexist. The lady who was the target of the joke though didnt seem to mind. We know a lot of us don't care about who a person is, only how good they are. But we should also speak out when we see such things happen. I personally don't give a rat's arse about your religion, political affiliation, race, gender, ethnic group, sexual orientation e.t.c If you can code, that's all I need to know. Bias based on OS, IDE, text editors, indentation style, repository e.t.c I believe are just for fun though I don't judge people based on that.

Saw this on Quora a few days ago. Really insightful

Phantom bugs. Those sticks you took must be the real deal
-
Programming styles are like assholes. Everybody has one but nobody likes the another person's
-
I like the idea proposed by @featurenotbug
I am not paranoid about ads as most people especially if its not obtrusive.
Also the idea of accepting Cryptos for donation should be considered.
I noticed that there are maybe 20 rants in my feed per time. Putting one ad in this 20 isn't exactly a bad idea. The ad could be like a rant as someone suggested, but have a different background color. -
AWS went down because of a typo.
Gitlab was down because of backup failures.
If all softwares were perfect, there would be no need for patches which are released from time to time.
Just keep that on mind. Learn from it and move on. From what you said about your boss, I think he would understand. -
Nice one. I hope your code doesnt compile at first run.
-
Just hope the bootloader isn't locked and if it is, then some genius has found a way to unlock it. Good luck

There happens to be this github project that lists a lot of good sites where you can freelance or work remotely.

My Business Developer tried to convince me to make something similar, because apparently he talks with the clients and believes they would like it. I couldn't swear at him to go fuck himself, but managed to politely tell him, I would never do that. If only he knew how close he came to getting punched in the face.
