My battery is low so imma comment and hope someone else interacts so I can joint this compass bandwagon because I'm genuinely interested in what I'd be
-
Unpopular opinion: I like the touch bar. It makes a fair bit of sense to have an infinitely configurable bar of macro keys you can swipe through without moving your hands too far from the keyboard. I might have placed it differently (vertical and to the left side, maybe?) but its still something that's not entirely useless.

@delete they could at least have given us an SD card reader, given the notion that Macs are used for media production a lot
-
@kamen a stereotype I seem to live up to
-
Clearly !dev but it gave me a good chuckle. I needed a chuckle.
-
I want more stickers for mine, now. That CSS sucks one, as others have pointed out, is a good one

I saw a cash machine running windows the other day. Never realised that they were full desktop computers, I assumed that it'd be a stripped down embedded thing, but this one was running full Windows 7 (professional or maybe enterprise? I can't remember). It was stuck in a boot loop so you could see what it was on the login screen just before it crashed and rebooted. I'm pretty certain it wasn't the usual "embedded" version of the OS you'd expect it to have.

I hate it when it comes up with "crosswalk" because my mind thinks of those enclosed bridges between two buildings (I think they're actually skywalks?) when in fact its just Google is American and they mean a pedestrian crossing.
-
@devTea Kali isn't too bad… unless you're on the receiving end of it.
I guess its most depressing when you find out just how many security flaws there are in your project. -
I /should/ use my comments like I use my hashtags: only if you need more information and possibly a word to search.
#this block does this thing
#this variable is the processed version of that, used in this function
#magic: don't touch
Of course, in real life, I'm either over enthusiastic and state the obvious, or lazy and don't leave myself breadcrumbs when I forget what that thing is. -
@jesustricks Linus made the kernel for fun, not profit, and maybe once he was humble, but fame changes people and I imagine with many young programmers looking upon him with an almost godlike view, he's taken it to his head.
That, or his actions are entirely deliberate and he just doesn't want people to hold him with such high regard. -
@sbiewald chromium's pepper flash could probably be pulled out as a standalone thing, too.
(Could be wrong, though, it could be one of those things that only comes with chrome, or it could already be standalone and I'm dumb) -
I can agree with the first part, but we all know we're the first ones to use a VPN at work, not to hide our slacking off, but to hide our stack overflow usage from the boss.

No more Cool Math games. Will solve some problems in schools.
Furries will be upset about the sacred yiff animations, but with a large portion being nerds they have no excuse for not knowing about HTML5. -
Any way to leave something fun for the guy taking over from you? A little chuckle might make it easier joining a new project, after all.
-
The only reason I might identify with flat earthers is to exemplify the power of belief and maybe to say how its kinda hard for an individual to do big science.
-
@Milenchy unless its a roundabout insult?
-
I tend to use dd/mm/yyyy for displaying the date, but in personal projects I've used yyyy-mm-dd for file names. Sometimes I've been really pedantic and used yyyy-mm-dd-h-m-s just because I can.
-
Hey, remember when the hacker manifesto said how we exist without skin colour and instead judge each other on what we say and do? Damn, I wish we could have kept that ideology going longer...
-
Call sign?
Being "that guy" aside, I always used "Username" -
"This is why computer people have issues whenever the notion of logging searches for crime prevention comes up" and other rants about the NSA and dragnet surveillance in general.
-
@irene fair point, actually. Didn't think of that.
-
Its not even that I mind adverts, I just don't want them tracking me.
And as a side note, the algorithm is often wrong about my interests, anyway, since I find myself clicking more adverts when I can turn personalisation off purely because I get served more relevant adverts when they aren't trying to predict what I like. -
Scrolling past and my mind briefly went GIANT SPIDER
-
Paper towel dispenser? Have they not heard of automatic hand driers? Those things turn your hands into Jeremy Clarkson's face in a fraction of the time it takes to fill the paper towel bin
-
@Root I can agree there.
Another variation I see on this format is "should the car save the occupants or the pedestrians" and I hate it because the answer should be obvious: normal cars are designed to protect the occupants in a crash and we aren't going just bin that, so crash the self driving car to save the people that aren't surrounded by a protective box.
