How do you ask a co worker about their salary? Heard from one of our new hires that he asked for considerably more than what I started at, but I'm not sure if he was referring to his base salary or total value of compensation. It would boost my confidence considerably if I knew what I could be asking for. Hell even getting that as a starting would be quite a step up.

Created a docker stack that can run on a swarm, tried out an actor system framework with a really nice message passing interface, used a web server framework built on that actor framework, used a really cool ORM that relies heavily on code generation, did some experimenting with Alpine Linux, and re-learned for the 100th time how to deal with CORS

Software engineering is slowly being lowered to a basic skill to please corporations that literally want you to automate your job away. The only fruitful areas of software engineering that I can see being relevant in the next 10 years are those mixed with other hard sciences such as bioinformatics, robotics, bleeding edge statistics and mathematics (AI research), physics, etc. The trend I see right now is that software engineering is being integrated with business-oriented degrees or arts degrees, targeted programs towards beginners offered for free or low prices. There's going to be a higher barrier of entry for the jobs that are actually worth the stress and I'm praying I'll be able to catch the train before it leaves the station.

Do y'all prefer rebase or merging workflows? I still don't understand the difference.

After 3 weeks of interviews, emails and preparation, I've finally been turned down for an internship at a local company that would have been fucking rad to work at.

About to have my first interview ever for a sw Dev position. Any advice? It's a co op job posted by my uni at a local start up (already has funding and a product).

I don't program for days on end. It takes a few weeks and then I fell good about it again. Sometimes I wonder if I even like programming. I do well in college, but I've never had a job as a dev (aside from student "research" positions). I'm worried that I'll just burn out and get fired or quit and lose interest. Maybe I already have? Can't think of any side projects to develop either, they all seem out of reach. Still figuring out how to cope with it. The test grades don't do it for me anymore.
