I swear some people code too much because they dont want to write some bash nor bother with the posix way of piping everything together.4
-
The guy who became my manager just pushes to the prod branch.
On a repo where another team clearly set up development and production branches.
This guy has been pushing code like crazy and I always wanted to take my time setting things up properly in our team: TDD, CI/CD, etc.
Because he pushed so much he became my manager and I was seen as unproductive.
Data Science and software development best practices just dont coexist it seems.
Yeah yeah, it's up to me to start introducing good practices, but atm "getting it done" takes priority over the real based shit.4 -
Title on LinkedIn: MLOps Engineer
Senior Recruiter on LinkedIn: so we were thinking of hiring you as a web developer
Bruh2 -
My gf wants to be a nomad.
I just like to code in my chosen place of work (home) and not lose focus with moving around.
I'm worried, I get anxiety if I don't find myself in places that let me be productive. I'm very much like a cat in that regard 🐈7 -
New job. "Wtf" code.
I can see my performance review being hampered by the fact that I'm not intimate with this mess.2 -
Here's one for the data scientists and ML Engineers.
Someone set a literal date feature (not month, not season, but date) as a categorical feature... as a string type 🥺
I don't trust this model will perform for long2 -
My dumb effin ass signed a contract as a service provider.
I can't just change jobs now.
In that sense, it's better to be an employee rather than a contractor/freelance.
Should have read it man1 -
IT admins of devRant, explain my dumbass the following:
Why would an IT department put servers in a VPN without TLS.
They presume they don't need because muh-VPN.
And then they don't want to hand out VPN connections to anyone and force me to use Citrix RDP 🤡
I know there are security reasons, but is there not a better way? Like goteleport.com ?
Asking for a friend (or several)5 -
Fucking all of them.
I get stuck doing mind numbing bullshit without learning anything new or beneficial to my career.
It literally doesnt let me sleep at night.
I could become Senior in terms of years and still be Junior in terms of knowledge if I were to trust these fucking bosses who like to pretend to be mentors.
Udemy here I come. -
IT department of client still doesn't get its shit together. Previously, I've ranted that they insist I access their GitLab through a fucking RDP.
Me: requests an account to their Confluence space
Them: give me a Confluence account. Naturally, Confluence requests that I confirm my email. That needs to be confirmed in the inbox of my.name@theircompany.com. Mail servers hosted by Azure, using Outlook.
Me: ok, let's configure my Outlook, 2FA as they configured to demand it from me... install MS's authenticator app, ok so far so good... Now I'm ready to login and find that email from Confluence and... ERROR 500 INVALID LICENSE
Fucking hell. You just love your siloes so much you actually make it impossible to access it and feel good about my own good will. -
That moment when... something finally works.
But you don't trust it.
So you pass it bad inputs to see if it's failing as it should.7 -
Im 29... and I realize all the bosses I had never had my future in my best consideration.
Is there such a company that bets on the well being and the stability of their employees?12 -
Had a branch that I was ready to push to a remote and open a PR tp this big open source project.
I was making a git pull from their master in order to not have merge conflicts on remote... and then I see that their master branch already had the feature that I was trying to implement, merged 10 days ago.
A lot of work... for nothing.
Because I had to wait on some old ass company policy process bs on open source software to give me permission to push to a codebase we're using in their internal product.
Well in today's meeting I made a reference to this... they still insisted on intellecxual preperty bs. Im questioning their ability to think.
Im pushing fixes and enhancements to that without permission, idgaf4 -
My team is using Teams to share code snippets. And because I know they don't (know how to?) use git remotes, I have to share my code through Teams as well.11
-
No one uses Git, nor any code hosting service, but I'm the Junior.
Yeah okay, fuck you and your fucking siloes.
I won't tolerate lack of version control anymore, I'll be looking for the next "professional opportunity".11 -
Client company will only move to the cloud once they learn their competitor has, in fact, moved to the cloud. Way to compete guys.
You ain't shit.2 -
A fellow <insert some data science title here> giving me more acknowledgement than all of the old guys running the show and, erm, "leading"?
Fucker left me behind, good for him. -
For the first time I am feeling like.... I hate my job.
Agile and Scrum can be fucked, but at least there is a work methodology. I was hired by a company being run the old school way.
These guys never heard of git??
- Fuck you. We never used git and neither should you.
Client company does not want to give me push/pull access to their gitlab instance??
- Fuck you, you can use our RDP server for that.
Project planning features be damned, they've got email, Teams and videocalls!
Can I develop in peace? Fuck no, I have to give IT support to the guy who hired me.
Our timeline is defined IN A FUCKING WORD DOCUMENT FOR FUCKS SAKE. I can't connect Issues to milestones in a Word doc
Oh, and the customer is running everything on prem. If there is a need to scale up, FUCK ME. I should have specified 20 machines from the get go or gtfo. We're using 2 machines to run 8 different services that are going to be ingesting and computing data.
They want state of the art on a cheapskate.
And I have nothing else lined up at the moment. Although I am soon to renew the contract... This contract binds me with professional responsibility for a project being ran by people who do not give a single fuck about optimizing the work process.3 -
We specified a very optimistic setup for a data science platform for a client....
Minimum one machine with a 16 core CPU with 64GB RAM to process data.....
Client's IT department: Best we can do is an 8 core 16GB server.
Literally what I have on my laptop.
Data scientist doesn't use any out-of-memory data processing framework, e.g. Dask, despite telling him it's the best way to be economical on memory; ipykernel kills the computation anyway because it runs out of memory.
Data scientist has a 64GB machine himself so he says it's fine.
Purpose of the server: rendered pointless.5 -
Doing a technical assessment. Slightly different stack than what I am used to!
- NGINX instead of Traefik
- Kubernetes instead of Docker Swarm
Just because the stack is different, anxiety / impostor syndrome is kicking in. I'm proud of myself for commanding my brain and body to execute:
While !done:
- google,
- find simplest straightforward tutorial
- implement
The chemicals inside my body are all over the place. I really want to move out of my current job!! -
Interviewed for a job. Said that the colleague in charge of data engineering picked MSSQL Server for data warehousing, and that I had to write a plugin for that.
Interviewer - experienced in all things data - chuckled as soon as I said Microsoft. -
75% of the meetings with tech management (CTO and alike) could be efficient and effective if only they used proper tooling with Issues and Milestones as provided by their *self-hosted* GitLab instance.
They just use emails instead. -
Why is it that so much of the Apache software for data is written in... Java?
I'm not a veteran Data Engineer, but I cannot imagine what makes Java better than Rust or Go9 -
Riddle me this
Client wants solution based on open source software.
Any additional software that I write (let's say, an offline store plugin for Feast feature store) to add missing functionality has to be closed source.
Fuck you. Intellectual property my ass. You and me wouldn't even have projects if it werent for OSS.
Good luck maintaining the plugin after I am gone.
I'm doing a lot of work and will have close to nothing to show to future employers.
(BTW, if it were for the old Microsoft model of code source, I would have never become a programmer of any sort. God bless OSS)3 -
Client's IT department is fine about giving me a laptop for exclusive access to their VPN, security reasons, etc. Ok, fine I get it.
But they do not want to give me a Linux machine - only Windows!
How am I supposed to get shit done.11 -
Fuck this client's IT department. They're a bunch of Microsoft asslickers.
How am I supposed to push code to your self-hosted GitLab instance if you restrict me to Citrix RDP????? No OpenVPN access because I'm on Linux?? Seriously? Because I am not using any of your laptops?
FUCK YOU DUMBASSES, I COULD DO A BETTER JOB THAN YOU AND I JUST PLAY WITH LINUX.
When I said I only needed terminal access I would have never imagined they were thinking of Putty inside an RDP. What a steaming shit.
Oh you guys don't have a secret management service as any enterprise should? Oh I cannot add a secret management service as part of the solution I am building for you guys because "Hurr Durr yOu HaVe NoT pUt ThIs In ThE pRoJeCt PrOpOsAl sO nO"
Fuck you guys. You guys only don't want to move to the cloud to not lose your jobs. I would be far more productive than relying on you pieces of dumbassery.
They are all having each others back in using shit technology and practices.7 -
I asked my boss for a raise. Since we're data scientists, I basically plotted a column chart showing that he was paying me half of the european average. I said I was willing to negotiate but he was very 'discomfortable'.
Time to go find another job. Or second one 😭6
