WORST UBUNTU RELEASE TO DATE!

Why oh why did they go with /swapfile by default? I was legacy booting with UEFI enabled and it still didn't work! And don't get me started on nouveau (Nvidia OSS).

When I click "use proprietary software" I want the OS to do everything in its power to just work. Disable 3D acceleration if you must - at least boot to a console.

I'm scared to try it on my main desktop now!

I switched to Linux Mint and I'm happy now, I just needed an instant OS that works. 😊

Jeff Bezos is on track to surpass Bill Gates as the wealthiest man in tech. Amazon has a history of questionable actions (look up Nucleus, Diapers.com, BookSurge, MacMillan vs Amazon, and Hachette).

They are known to have a strong lobbying presence and often pay lower wages than their competitors.

I buy from Amazon because I like their service and prices (not always the cheapest, but arguably the best buying experience), but with every purchase I can't help but wonder what I'm contributing to.
It's obvious small tech companies struggle to survive and that is the result of our consumption.

I have this one major pet peeve - getting interrupted on any messenger by "hey".

There's this new guy who's much older and thinks he's a such a f'ing hotshot that he undermines everything I worked on to drop in some a** backwards BS. Luckily I don't have to work with him often, only one day a week - else I would go nuts! He constantly name drops this same company, with little disregard for others younger than him.

Recruiter for a well known company somehow finds my personal email, no biggie - it's not the first time they've contacted me. I decide to give it a shot, phone interview is scheduled, they're a no show. Email them 10 after, they want to reschedule, I do a reschedule. Again, no show. Yeah, it's like that... I haven't even heard back now. Seriously, how do these people even hold jobs?

My team is forcing pair programming. From past experience, it's never worked for me, it slows down my work by 10x because of my sporadic programming style.

Seniors and Architects, what are your thoughts? I've seen it do wonders for novice devs, but the return seems to decline with experience.

The laziness of devs, including myself, goes hand-in with the crazy deliveries (groceries, etc) that Amazon delivers without having to leave home.

Company has me giving interviews and today brought the second "Sr JavaScript Developer" that's gotten past multiple people that can't even construct a fucking "for" loop.

YSlow, go away! Stop dropping my score for not using CDNs! I used your fucking CDN for delivery and it was tripling my load times! I know what I'm doing, now kindly fuck off!

That said, I just have a few headers to set and images to reduce and I'll be at 100% with PageSpeed (but not YSlow because they suck). At least Google knows when CDNs are and aren't beneficial!

Every time we have a release, "Release Engineering" stops building our test environments from master. I've been preaching Continuous Deployment for months and here we are with the most broken system. The build actually builds all test environments AND prod from the same branch because "it's easier" for "Release Engineering". So now I have to wait for the code freeze on release and hope RE doesn't fuck up and deploy an untested branch to prod... AND hope we're given enough time to test and debug the next release since we can't right now...

I wasted nearly 3 hours total of my working hours (I'm a contractor, every hour I don't work, I don't get paid) just to conclude interviews with a jackass who gets bent up over how I won't answer invasive questions about previous work on [big international project] at [big international software company]. For fuck sake, good talent signs NDAs, if you expect me to tell you confidential details, then you can fuck off!!! Asking me 5 times over and over isn't going to get you a different answer after I told you details are confidential.

So here I am doing a follow-up with this new agency and telling them it went well other than the jackass manager who asked invasive questions, tells me he only got 2hrs sleep, and doesn't let me finish my questions. What a fucking waste of my time. And here I am thinking it went alright and I could work there as long as the rate is hourly and I report to someone who takes care of themselves — nope, apparently this guy is the point of contact between the agencies. Good luck finding talent that wants to work for you, you jackass!

Oh, and the best part, he claimed he worked for that same company — so either he knows the NDA or he's a fucking liar.

AND the other guy in the room asked for a generic flow (so I could answer, as the question no longer requires me to disclose confidential information) — I have a solid answer, the other guy was happy. But no, doesn't satisfy the jackasses invasive question.

ESNext (next version of JavaScript) — because no matter what I do, as long as I'm working with web technologies, JavaScript is king. My career has evolved from UI-focused work, primarily working with JavaScript, yet I've also worked on embedded platforms and even operating systems! JavaScript is my foundation and you must always remember your roots!

I just spent nearly 4 straight hours dealing with iptables and RancherOS. First the system resets got me, then the config format got me, then netmasks, then gateways, then iptables. Now I'm just relieved to have it all working and a bit happy I understand iptables much better.

Quickly! I've got a report due in about 2 hours, I've got the data and already some charts generated with tools.

Now, I need a nice timeline generator for calculated data. Something where I can plug in times and durations — and get back a fancy looking timeline. Similar to what Chrome dev tools does for network inspection.

Last night I had a minor hiccup with a iOS/Android CI service I absolutely love (BuddyBuild), so naturally I contact their support to address the issue and ask about potential new plans. A couple minutes later I find out I'm talking with the CEO! Turns out he's a really nice and receptive guy who cares a lot about their service!

How cool is that!? It was nice to tell him how much I've enjoyed their product and about the headache it's saved me!

Why the fuck doesn't React Native have proper date.toLocaleString() support!? Polyfills don't even seem to exist for it... Now I have to use a giant locales library just to support one locale that should be native. 😡

So Docker is pretty amazing, but I'm finding myself immensely frustrated at all the stupid shit devs do with their Dockfiles and stacks. Like the surprise of finding out Jenkins clients aren't setup for SSH or stacks opening up 5 public ports when all they really need are a bunch of private ports. Or how Jenkins deployments expect crazy tags so I have to add some really stupid tags to my own nodes.

How is it so hard to comprehend Docker for devs? It's so easy that I'm in utter bliss when I stop trying to use 3rd party stacks.

I've finally setup a dedicated Docker box with RancherOS and Rancher... Shipyard looked nice as well (the simplicity like beautiful) but the cloud management with Rancher is amazing!

It took me minutes to install the OS, minutes to install Rancher, then on my phone it took minutes to install Jenkins with swarm support!

I'm loving this!

I have two identical machine configurations. Somehow one of the two is so badly fucked up by EFI boot that it still won't boot from anything other than the SSD or EFI. Even a bios reset won't fix it.

How do I even go about resetting EFI? I just need the thing to boot from the damn disk. (it's workstation grade mobo, has vPro and that other nonsense, I think it's a Q87 chipset)

RancherOS is 20MB and all I have are blank DVDs... It's so wasteful and unexpected, even a CD would be overkill! 😵
