@magicMirror declarations in the header are only needed in classes where you’re defining the function. These classes are just calling it.

Yes men can do this too. But women have to. We don’t get to not.
This isn’t just my experience. Every time I mention it, women reach out to me saying “I thought it was just me!” We somehow all independently developed this survival strategy at work, but sure, coincidence lol -
@PaperTrail I promise, that’s not how it works in a corporate environment lol. When a sentiment grows against you, you get blackballed and avoided. I’m glad you’ve never had to experience that tho!
-
It can be done! I got me a house husband that keeps our life together
-
@popapopi my company recently restructured titles and changed “staff engineer” to “lead engineer.” So now lead can either mean “lead developer of this team,,” or staff dev. Will never understand why they went the homonym route.
-
If they took stock of their team and realized they’re only getting the perspective of males because of previous bias in their hiring process, not that weird. A variety of perspectives does make a team stronger and better prepared.

@AlmondSauce I agree that the reality is the best negotiator wins. That's why I took two Harvard negotiation courses and practiced methods with my friends who always get their asking salary.
Despite getting the recruiter/company to bump the offer by $30-50k, it still often falls below market level and it's hard to know what more can be done. I think it's fair to say that a ceiling sometimes (not always) exists, as ugly as that sounds to even say. Negotiators look for weakness and sometimes there's one thing they see as a weakness that you can't change. -
@WeAreMany What's interesting is that I didn't say why they offered me less, I don't know why. But you're right, maybe that was a potential reason.
I think assuming we're reading an argument we're already heard before clouds our ability to have direct & rational convos. I understand the line of thought isn't immediately obvious to you, but for the sake of clarity it's probably best to stick with what was said.
Interesting note about the EU startup pattern. I too have noticed that women do get hired for the sake of "diversity" quite often, at a significantly lower rate of pay. It's a win-win for the company and a win-lose for the woman, every time it happens. -
@AlmondSauce Right?! This is how I feel about it. It's very strange that we have to be constantly watching our backs in these negotiations instead of being allowed to spend our energy on the actual work.

I just had a flashback to the time an admin asked me "why do you need access to that feature?" and made me explain myself. Talk about insult to injury...
These stories of relatable situations are helping, thank you :D -
@magicMirror The admins are the only ones who can make me an admin, with no official "Account owner," but that very reason is the one they give-- "I'm not sure if I'm allowed." At some point you have to wonder how the other 63 got their admin access over the past two years...
Most (but not all) who request and are given that access are managers, so I guess that makes the existing admins feel more confident that they won't get in trouble. But what more could I possibly do to show I need it the most lol? I was told "just keep asking ______ he's agreed to give you each individual permission you need" which feels like an "anything but actually giving her admin" move -
This is more annoying bc I used to be IT and we had admin access to literally everything, no one cared and also nobody died
-
I’m an ex-IT turned dev and you’d be surprised how frequently this happens. When I ran a repair shop I ran into two separate customers who wouldn’t even speak to me when they found out I was a woman.
Serves as a reminder that when women bring up sexism, we’re not pulling it out of our ass. This shit is sadly still common af, and change only comes from speaking up about it. -
I used to hate this so much.
But it actually happened today and it was awesome. We were shooting the shit about past executives and creative geniuses and company scandals 😅 The freedom of having your project canceled but still funded through the end of the year.
Better to be sitting there than in front of code that’s got a death notice all over it. That’s my new attitude.
I assume you had work to do, and this was not fun for you tho. Do they let you bring your laptop into meetings? -
It’s like living with your parents, but a hundred of them. I can’t do it. I worked in IT support before becoming a dev and I never wanna go back. Kudos to you for your patience.

@agaskins You said it, and you said it beautifully <3

I say it every time— max password lengths should be illegal.

@LiamHolmes Spot on for me.
Except for the Post-Its. Finance is on another floor :| -

@bittersweet I see your point, but isn’t programming much more about overall experience in building a codebase rather than how many years you’ve been on a certain framework?
If you’ve been coding longer than the local “experts” in node, etc., you shouldn’t worry about learning those frameworks too late, and trust yourself to see things in them that a junior just wouldn’t.
Full disclosure, I am a junior dev. But I look up to a lot of senior devs who have this skill— once you’ve seen so many projects and codebases, you have a ton of insight into using the newer tools well. Nobody has to know you learned this last week, they just have to see that you know the way code is supposed to be constructed for best results. That ability is way more important than which particular sets of syntax you usually write with. -
@Tale-Of-X9 The lead himself tells me “trust me, you don’t wanna go to those meetings... they’re so boring. Trust me.”
I actually really do wanna go to those meetings. I am that kind of employee, who loves to meet and regroup and ask questions and get a clear view of a project.
We’ve started having “sprint planning review” post-meetings where our lead tells us what he just learned. But since he hates sprint reviews, it’s mostly us asking him pointed questions and hoping he remembers what he just heard... -
@PonySlaystation @“Significant Other”;

I’m actually afraid to put my devRant sticker on my laptop for this reason :/
-
Why laugh? He wants to be like you! That’s awesome!
Teach him just enough to let him break everything 😂 That is how one truly learns. -
What kind of iOS 11 bugs are you seeing? (Can’t believe no one has asked yet!)

My old boss used to call antivirus software “a monogamous virus”, because it acts like a jealous virus that won’t let other viruses come near you while it constantly begs for your attention at the least convenient times.
Not sure if I agree, but it’s an entertaining thought. He was a weird one... -
@krazycavin I’m biased, but I agree that degrees are not how skill is assessed anymore. It’s how you do the job, and how often you’re afforded new opportunities to learn.
I failed math in high school and never finished college, but my company is training me in advanced calculus for machine learning development and I love it. The workplace is often nothing like college, and my ability to do great work is unrelated to my struggles in an academic environment 💪👩🎓 -
@Masta I know my post was long... but I did throw in there that my old code doesn’t work in his new insanity class 🙃 I was so hopeful to be able to just restore from version control, too!
-
Consider yourself lucky. Two of the last 3 uber drivers I’ve had, who found out I make apps for a living, have enthusiastically tried to get me to code their imaginary app for them. This person is just harmlessly adorable 😄
