Ubuntu doesn't use 50% CPU. It uses less than Windows though. Too lazy to run benchmarks.

The other day I was watching a show and my OS decided to lock up when the abusive pimp said "do just this one thing for me". That "one thing for me" looped for like a minute along with a frozen image before I clocked that I'm looking at a bug and not a storytelling device.

@lorentz yikes that sounds like a serious issue. You sure it's software and but hardware?
If anything Linux is solid. If you do upgrades and config changes sure some things can happen (especially on arch) but normal operation is odd. I've got several machines running arch here including an always on Intel NUC. Don't have the issue you describe.

@hjk101 I've had it on 4 laptops, the only invariant was that they were all arch setups with a KDE desktop installed. It occurred even when I wasn't in KDE.

@hjk101 I'm as confused as anyone. I know of companies that deploy a similar setup to a thousand or more computers. If it was a bug in any of the major software components it'd be well-known on a statistical basis.

More recently kwin (I think?) also developed a consistent segfault on first login attempt after boot, but I'm pretty sure that's just a driver + Wayland issue, I have never seen this elsewhere. The freezes have literally followed me for as long as I'd been using Linux, although their frequency varies between a few months to twice a day based mostly on the presence of infamous problematic hardware such as NVidia or TPLink

I typed r8169 so many times in 2018 that it sometimes replaces IDs and passwords in my mind.

Edit: currently looking at 1 to 3 percent just browsing. My guess is VSCode is running on a lot of systems.

@Demolishun vscode is bloated to hell. My chromebook(lenovo s20) linux "subsystem" had a hardtime with it. And that was without any plugins installed. Maybe my hardware specs shows an extreme slowness of the program, but that would be happening on any overloaded system.

What does perf systemwide profiling Show as consumption hotspot?

Any result would indicate a bug!
