I just burped out loud on a live call with about 30 people and I thought my mic was muted.

@Anchor Thanks for rubbing it in.

Not nearly as embarrassing as a fart….

@Anchor I don’t think anyone could trace it to me. Too many people.

@Anchor I heard some laughing and that’s when i noticed the mute button wasn’t enabled. The laughter came from a physical conference room so the audio was muddy and it was hard to make out what they were laughing about due to crosstalk. But from what I could discern it was about something else. Oh well, it’s a limited contract and it’s ending next month. I have other prospects.

That's why I love how in my ThinkPad there's a button for muting the mic, which has an LED that tells me whether the mic is actually muted or not, so I can determine that at a glance.

My fear is that this would somehow fail, but... it does give some sense of safety.

@nururururu I usually check but today I was multitasking. Sometimes mute is delayed in its effect. Once many years ago I was on a conference call and my kids started arguing in the background. I hit mute so I could yell across the house at them to knock it off. Apparently my mute button was delayed in doing its job and the participants heard the beginning of my parental rant. So embarrassing.

Did your square light up when speaking?

I think most people get it. Burps and other bodily noises sometimes just happen.

Finally a clear and direct answer.

Why not just own it. Like: "Funny, this burp had more substance than, the stuff the Boss is blabbering about."

Sometimes I fart so loud on mute and look to see if there are any reactions from people on camera to see if the mute button doesn’t work…

@coldfire I have a feeling this is somehow political …

@Anchor If it helps, I recently lost a job because I didn’t “fit in” with all the cool people (mostly sales and marketing goons who spend their whole day talking shit and high-fiving and being general idiots). I was just trying to keep up with the constant flow of work and asking for more dev help while they threw parties and sold even more dev work I wasn’t going to be able to complete. When I pushed back they said I wasn’t a “team player” like they were and that I wasn’t a good cultural fit.

Once I wasn't paying close enough attention once and ended up UNmuting myself to burp incredibly loud, and then REmuted myself. Had no clue till the call went silent for a couple seconds and then someone started laughing.

@dubacca that's the equivalent of entering a room of people, burping, and exiting immediately

@electrineer In one of my workplaces, 26 years ago, that behavior was not only acceptable, it was hilarious.
