Yeah, could totally be a Japanese fantasy porn. But I looked online and turns out GitHub bought the octocat as an iStock photo. It is said to represent the octopus merge in Git. Some even say that it represents how complex code combine to make peculiar things. All in all, it was a weird design decision.

Another fact: The same guy who made the Git logo also made the Twitter logo. He says he doesn't remember making Ocotopuss (as he calls it) though.

The octopus obviously means complex code and branches. The cat to me seems like homage to Schrodinger's kitty
