Had a conversation with someone a little while ago. I opened my email app (TutaNota) and he asked what the hell that email thingy was. Explained the encrypted/privacy reasons.

"Why would you encrypt everything?"

Because I have stuff to hide. Do you?

"Nahh I just use outlook, I have nothing to hide".

Told him to email me all his usernames/passwords, bank statements, porn preferences, emails, messages etc etc.

"But that's private data!".

Exactly.

"But I thought you meant like crime/illegal stuffs etc"

Nope. I just asked if you had anything to hide, you interpreted that as having anything non-lawfully to hide. I never even asked anything in relation to non-lawful stuff.

Because, having something to hide doesn't mean it's criminal/illegal, it means you'd like to keep that stuff private.

    I just wish it was kind of a doctor-patient thing.

    Sadly it's more like a 12 y.o. girl thing, where she tells everyone everything she knows about you and sometimes guesses new information based on previous interactions.

    But not your rants which are part of your private life. Thanks for sharing them mate interesting reads. :D

    @Noob I am not sure what you mean πŸ˜…
  • 1
    @UnknownDev Fully aware of that haha! And thanks, appreciate that!

    @Noob Absolutely! 😁

    Hey, Personally, I'm totally with you with privacy issues, I think all companies that store our information and all are really intrusive. But in fact, if you ask me all my username / password, the only reason I would not give them is very much, I do not want you to post things or send emails with my name ^^ . But if you want to see my messages and know what I buy, it will only be boring (but maybe because I'm rather silent on social media and if i but something online it'll be a skyrim t-shirt or a video game) :/

    @Krayorn But that part of you not wanting tme to post emails/send emails is a very much part of the whole privacy thingy :)

    Also, welcomes very muchies!

    ++ this, so much. privacy is so little to do with what you don't want the government to see — it's about the right to keep things to yourself.

    PS. I have some Keybase invites, if anyone would like. There are no DMs on devRant, but leave me your email or Twitter handle or something if you're interested.

    @Krayorn Athough I only partly agree with your comment, I'd like to be your first upvoter so hereby =D

    @gtoff I am on keybase as well :)

    @linuxxx, hum i don't totally get it ! Could you explain a bit more please ? I mean, facebook tell my friend what i have liked, or twitter tell them that i follow someone, but that's actually "public stuff", they never send a tweet or an email and pretends that it's from me. This is a very interesting subject, i already saw some of your other rants about that subject and i learned a lot, but obviously i have a serious lack of knowledge on the subject !

    And Thanks ^^

    @Krayorn I don't think I am entirely getting what you mean :) And you're most welcome!

    @linuxxx humph sorry, my english isn't really good.

    In which way the fact that I don't want that someone post in my name is related to the privacy issue. I see the big companies like someone who is reading behind my shoulder but they don't speak for me, or am i totally wrong ?
  • 1
    @Krayorn Oh don't worry about your English, it's alright! And I mean as in like, if you 'don't have anything to hide', you wouldn't mind anyone posting something on your behalf (in your name), would you? (if I am not clear enough please say so!)

    @gtoff

    Hey I'm interested on a keybase invite. I'll leave my Twitter: @Anton_Hill_

    Thanks in advance!
  • 1
    @araxhiel You on keybase as well? If yes, let me know your username is you're comfy with that :)
  • 1
    @linuxxx ho, you are perfectly clear thanks !
    The reason i don't want someone to post on my behalf is more related to the fact that i don't want to be associated with something i don't support. But i don't think that actually the companies that get my data actually do that and that's why i'm still on windows and on Social media even if i think about switching to linux and start focus more about the privacy of my data.

    @linuxxx kinda...

    I read about it some time ago (a year? Maybe more) but somehow it flew under my radar, until today, tbh, when the response of gtoff ringed a bell, so I decided to take a look and start to test it's features...

    You're telling me it isn't safe for me to email my friends about my man-on-duck porn preferences?

    Meanwhile in the British parliament: "Hey, you remember that whole privacy of information thing?"
    "Nah, we don't need that, this internet thing is scary. If we simply sacrifice the privacy and ease of mind of all our citizens, then we might catch 2 more people."
    (investigatory powers act)

    @linuxxx Doctor - Patient confidentiality agreement. He knows stuff about you but he keeps it to himself only. Same as a lawyer.

    Unfortunately it's not the case with those companies that steal our data.

    @linuxxx serious question: is there actually anyone with whom you have encrypted email conversations?
    I've never had to email someone who I could send an encrypted email
