It is completely normal that you aren't able to focus on coding after a day of coding. Most people no matter the industry, just listen to music, watch TV and spend time with family and friends when not working.
The commonly bragged about side projects just aren't possible for the average working person. You could do something on weekends - but then you have even less time for recreation and sooner or later burnout will happen. -
What @Oktokolo said. I’ve had a few ideas of side projects I want to work on. But then the same questions comes to mind every time. Do I really want to code more in the evening after having done so all day long for my employer/client? Do I really want to code on the weekend after having done so Mon-Fri?
I wish I could do some coding for my pleasure but at this stage in my life it seems unattainable. Maybe if I stopped programming professionally? Like become a bus driver so i can save my mental resources for coding my own projects… -
The gym would be the factor throwing me off if I were in your shoes. It switches to fight-and-flight and that's not a good friend of deep thinking. Or perhaps it's just my xp?
As for "coding after a whole day of coding" - depends. During the day I am coding. After my working hours - I'm creating and realising myself by doing something I truly want to create. The way I want to. By my timelines. By my terms. If it starts to feel like tedious coding then I must rediscover the purpose, the reason I'm trying to build that side project and adjust my focus to that. -
As others have said, it’s very individual.
My current job is not heavy on programming, mostly scripts and terminal stuff and troubleshooting Windows and Linux Mint PCs, which means my brain and eyes aren’t as fried after a day at work as they used to, so once the kids are in bed and my wife is watching some brain dead “reality tv” I can get a good 1-3 hours in doing my own project.
At my last job, programming all day with the occassional meeting, I did NOT feel like programming at all at home or for that matter look at a screen. -
I've noticed this thing happening to me just recently. On weekends, I actively try to keep my laptop turned OFF. I would be at home, browsing on my phone, doing other things etc... but I am repulsed by my laptop. I don't know if this happens to anyone else here.

@Oktokolo i guess whatever am doing is good then( i also do tv/family time/relax after work and on weekends) . it's just that the stagnating economy and current layoffs are scary and i want to keep on learning in case the axe comes for me too

@netikras yeah gym goves a great context switch. i get to move/train my body as well as meet people and change environment .
but again, gym makes my whole body to get tired which makes focusing difficult (actually the focus part is not much impacted as the part the motivation to open laptop) -
@dotenvironment if you want to be prepared for the collapse of society - the gym actually is better for that. Don't expect to be the only layoff when it comes to mass layoffs. And revolutions still aren't "won" on Facebook or Twitter but on the streets.

@Oktokolo 👁️👁️ too deep. we are still 4/5 generations away from any kind of self collapse/doom . as long as the earth has access to water, food and energy(coal, solar whatever) , its better to be in a part of the rat race to receive an access , than to think of doom
are you able to give 1/+ hour to any hobby project/self learning (technical, that could help you in infuture switch) ? if yes, HOW??
I want to create this website , but i keep on delaying that. i just have a faint idea of how the assoc technologies would be used , but putting even 1 hour aside becomes difficult once i come back from the gym in the evening. plus the effort to open laptop, refocus self and do something only to close laptop after an hour feels very less rewarding. I can't achieve anything in 1 hour, i need a continuous slot of 6+ hours to achieve something and plan for the next day.
