Of course you can change the MAC address of a network interface in Windows 10 or 11: https://digitalcitizen.life/change-...
You may still continue hating Windows for the countless actual reasons though.
I use Gentoo btw. -
sariel85342y@Oktokolo I did that exact one. Multiple reboots. Even went and did 3 others just to make sure it wasn't the online tut.
I even uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled.
Nothing worked.
I did it on my Linux machine. Took me 10 seconds. -
@sariel You could search for the specific network interface name. Might be a shitty driver preventing you to change the MAC. Could also try changing the MAC of the other interface instead. They probably don't use the same driver if one is wired and the other isn't...
-
@sariel This one uses a different setting:
https://groovypost.com/howto/...
No idea if it works either. -
100%.
The only reason why Windows exists is because of Corporate bullshit and Gamers. The only two uses of windows: Work, and video games. For no other reason could I think of using it. I too am forced to use it for work. But I'm otherwise a Linux/Mac guy for sure. -
sariel85342y@Demolishun pretty sure I looked at that one as well.
Turns out Windows and the driver are fighting for control over the hardware and Windows loses.
The driver and software supercedes Windows configs and will not allow me to change the mac. Even though the software isn't running at all in the process list ๐.
There's also no way to change it in the driver/software either.
At this point my only option is to replace the wireless card with something else and hope that it works or pray and install one of those gimmicky "totally not a virus" virus riddled programs that forces the mac to change.
The fucked up thing, running the exact same card on my second device with Linux. Not a single issue.
At this point I'm just going to live with it because it's only going to eventually push me to virtualize my device for work and allow me to have less bullshit in my life because of it.
"Oh Windows *insert bullshit reason here* overnight? Better restore that snapshot." -
max199313732y@corscheid only 2 usecases.
Videogames get more on Linux because of Valve Steam.
Work just needs a large shakeup(Virus infection) to get them going. -
the reason why windows is used that much, is because people are way to fucking comfortable and lazy.
I mean come on, how many of your non tech friends do you know, who have installed another OS on their PC, or even know what an OS is. Windows comes just preinstalled on most prebuilt Systems. -
@thebiochemic Nah, the real reason is that Windows actually is good enough for most people and that it already has a defacto monopoly on the desktop.
Even when people change from Windows to Linux, they normally go straight to Ubuntu - because it's community is the largest. Having a bigger market share is an advantage in itself and actually does compensate a lot of shortcomings because third-party help and workarounds are readily available. -
@Oktokolo that doesn't explain, why OSX has such a high market share tho. If what you say is true, everybody should install windows on their macbooks etc. This is not the case.
The people buy hardware for a specific purpose, and stick with whatever is on, because they don't care, if there is something better or different. Because these exact people are just way to lazy to move their asses to relearn how to use a computer or something else for such a minor inconvenience such as an OS or a Firmware.
I mean to be fair, i even notice that on myself: i recently built a new PC, and instead of putting a new OS in there, i just moved my ubuntu drive over, from my previous hardware, without even looking, what's new and cool out there. -
sariel85342y@Oktokolo hate to sound like a broken record but I tried that too ๐
Turns out the VPN client I use for work doesn't like that.
I had to uninstall the VPN software entirely and remove the wan drivers before anything worked again. -
@sariel
"Turns out the VPN client I use for work doesn't like that."
Turns out it was actually Kate. Kate hated that.

Windows, God damn you piece of fucking shit.
Why the fuck can't you make networking fucking easy like literally every other fucking operating system in the goddamn fucking world?
Why the fuck can't I spoof mac addresses so that I have the same IP address regardless of if I'm on a hard line or wireless?
Who in their fucking right mind thought that the pro version of Windows wouldn't need to do that?
I don't even like using you at this point, I'm forced to use you for work.
There's literally not enough explicitives that I can chain together to sufficiently convey how much I fucking hate you Microsoft. So enjoy this seizure inducing tourette's mode compilation.
