@lotd why 53? In my school the only ports open are 80 and 443 TCP, that's why I use OpenVPN on the 443.

I haven't come across a firewall that filters it.. :)
I have however come across ones that forwards 80 and 443 to a reverse proxy that kept terminating the connection :p -
@lotd In my school you can use the 53 port to connect ONLY with OpenDNS. Other destinations are rejected.

Another suggestion: Run pivpn on raspberry pi or pritunl on everything else. Then route your traffic over your home network.
College firewall blocks ssh traffic :/ Can't use github :(
