arminiae5668yAsk them to resubmit in proper format within a set (short) deadline. You could also deduct some points from the total score so they can't get full marks. This way, they still have a chance to get a grade that isn't zero but also, they learn that they need to be more careful next time..

Vaccuss5608yI am a tutor not a lecture so i dont have the authority to do much honestly. But yes it is specified how to submit both in writing and verbally this is also the final assessment of the semester. So all students have had a first go at this and not too mention the other subjects.

@Pythoneer it should be an implicit requirement that you must be able to run the file?
-
0tikurt6368yNot being able to follow assignment directions is enough reason for giving him zero, imho.

eldamir12298yI agree with folks here. The task was to produce executable code and he did not deliver.
If he was tasked with building a house, you wouldn't be satisfied with a photo of a house -
Now might be the time to teach them that one does not code in word. Point them to Sublime Text or if not willing to spend money, Notepad++
-
savage38yIt pains me that there are students in my year that also do this. It can't be that hard to learn how to use LaTeX surely?
-
boomi2358yMy professor would have just handed it back with 0/100 in red.
I encourage this method. -
vraGG638yTry to run it with python and grade that. Perhaps the guy is a genius and can write binary code in word that python can interpret. Probably not though :P
-
kerith2968yI had a similar problem once, the solution was: "I can't run it. make it work for tomorrow, or you get a 0"
Give'em a chance, but dont give any additional clues.
Or ask the class, they can decide democratically. -
skonteam9828y@Letmecode maybe they sent the code in a word doc because they wanted to gain more time to do the assessment . ( I did that once) *shame I know*
-
@rightbrace And what's the grade for homework that runs but crashes immediately? Maybe add a requirement about the interface. Something like "you work will be judged by the result of running this command on the command line: ./homework"

arminiae5668y@Charmgoggles thanks. I used to work as a lecturer, so I guess I know a bit about student's tricks and f*-ups ;)
-
arminiae5668y@skonteam that's why I would hold on to the original and set them a really short deadline (as in an hour) for resubmission of proper format. If anything changed, that would mean zero.

In my college we are forced to upload all the code, doesn't matter the language (py, C, java...) in a word and then add some pictures of the working program. I highly dub they even run it.
What the fuck student. Why in fuck would you submit a python assignment in word. So that all the formatting you know the stuff that tells python how to run the code all fucks up. How the fuck can I mark this.
