But it seems less and less likely. Soon they will start collating the sensitive info, governmental info in the name of betterment of human race.

I'd have mixed feelings about this, because their big-data bullshit finances a fuckton of FOSS projects. -
I was thinking about an earlier version of mass surveillance. Credit card companies. They track every transaction made by their card. You know they are selling those spending habits to advertisers. I bet it has been a closed loop system for decades.
So mass surveillance is not unique to the web. It has been going on for a while now. It won't go away until people stand up and say "enough is enough". I don't see that happening when everyone watches youtube and netflix and has no clue as to what is going on.

Not entirely dev related but the year that the mass surveillance companies go away (Google, Facebook (and WhatsApp, Instagram etc), Microsoft and a few others), I'll call that the best fucking year ever.
I hope I'll get to experience that in my lifetime!
