How many of you guys actually do the eight finger touch typing? Is it common among younger devs? And for those who don't, how fast do you consider yourself while coding (like actual mechanical typing of code)?

I'm slowly passing over from 8 finger-gamer config (left hand in gaming position) towards proper 8 fingers typing, but I have issues getting my hands to work together for combinations, which I've used one handed since I was 12.
When typing human languages, I consider myself average for a dev. However, my typing speed when coding is awful, mostly because I rely to heavily on autocompletion and tend to wait for it even for trivial stuff

I am but I think I'm average while coding speedwise.

To clarify it more: similar to what @CptFox said, the text editor I use (Vim) enforces me to certain typing habits for editing code such as reaching to the escape key to go to normal mode or reaching for the number row so this might slow me down a bit having to lift my hands from the asdf...jkl; row to any of the the more far away rows.

@rutee07 The CFO of a company I worked for did this once. She was pissed because of some issue with her email... keys went flying off the keyboard. I'm glad I don't work there anymore.

Freestyle typer, I just ... type, my way I have learned, it's definitely bad or ..at least slower.
Thought I should learn All10 but the problem is I use Czech keyboard in English environments so yeah.

I learned to type in 1972, in the 7th grade. One of the few sustained productive uses of my time. I can on the low end, type 75 words per minute.

I write code with 5 fingers and average speed.

Im 20 and i basically use all of my fingers for typing, some definitly less(thumbs especially) but I'd consider it 10 finger typing. I'm at that point where my brain and not my fingers are the limiting factor in speed.

Used Colemak layout to learn that proper technique, but:

Colemak is for typing, not coding (there are layouts for coding as well, but I don't switch between layouts too fast)

I've been back to qwerty for a few years now. Started with me not being able to use Colemak for some time, then I had to use school and later uni computers a lot... So I didn't switch back to Colemak even on my private laptop.

So I'm back to qwerty but I kinda use mixed technique now? Qwerty is not good for touchtyping, so with if I've always been more hover + move whole hand, but now I use all fingers about equally.

@rantsauce set your caps lock to esc dude and don't use caps lock at all.

I use my fiery beak to spew fire for typing.
