TL:DR: US Border Control can detain you, force you to unlock and search all your devices without a warrant, they don't even need a hint of suspicion. Guess I aint travelling to the US in the foreseeable future. This is some North-Korea shit.

No it is not. As much as i don't like government overreach, if a foreigner wants to come to my country, I want the gov to be 100% sure that the person isn't planning anything shady.

It is simple, you go to a country, you abide by their laws. Don't like it, don't go.
  • 10
yup, not traveling to the US either. And if I do, I don't bring my own electronic devices with me, so they can go fuck themselves.

@MrCSharp If you have founded suspicion, I'm all in. Protect the country and do what you must. But detain and search his shit just because you don't like the shirt he's wearing? Nah mate, that's not how we roll. That's the whole reason we have the legal system.
And read the article, one of them was held with physical force and choked. That's not protecting the country, that's some power-tripping dickwad having a fit.
Plus they can share your data with other agencies, hell even other governments. Why don't we just have one giant cloud where all humanity uploads all their data because who the fuck needs privacy if you aint doing anything wrong?!
Orwell is probably spinning in his grave so fast you could hook him up to a generator.

Emigrants making rules for other emigrants after they killed native americans, this country will kill itself by its own economy 😂
  • 7
@MrCSharp I just reread your comment and noticed yoj saod 'foreigners'. Most if not all of the people in the article were US citizens.
One of them even a fucking NASA engineer
  • 4
@MrCSharp It's not foreigners. It's its own citizens that this rogue state is fucking over.

It's well known that the US gov is completely out of control in USSR style, doesn't respect human rights even for its own citizens, let alone others, and that it's best to avoid this shithole at all (despite nice individual Americans). And no, it was already that bad under Obama.

For those who somehow must visit that Soviet camp, it's advised to bring in a blank laptop and load shit via VPN after crossing the borders.

Obviously, criminals with an IQ above room temperature (i.e. above the border control zombies) know this too so that the whole shit show is pointless anyway.
  • 2
@irene for that particular problem, yes. Doesn't change the fact that the US are a rogue state and gov thinks human rights don't apply before the border so that they may snatch anyone based off on some obscure list and let him rot in some illegal torture prison without ever seeing an attorney or a court process.
  • 0
@irene Yup. Just have a laptop that you blank out before entering or leaving the country, easy.
  • 2
@Fast-Nop I just hope that in case I ever have to go to the US, I am not on one of these obscure lists.
  • 3
Don't worry if you don't have some mortadella with you you will be fine. Otherwise you will be detained and public opinion will be the only thing keeping law enforcement in check so you'd better hope you make the news.
  • 2
@gathurian how would you define "founded suspecion"?

If you were a border agent, what would make someone suspicious to you?

Also, are you suggesting that US citizens can't be shady? can't be plotting anything illegal?

The lawsuit names 11 people... out of how many that go into the US everyday? Are you telling me that the thousands of people that land on US soil are treated like shit? Every single one of them?

Yes, it is an Orwellian nightmare and I stated I don't like government overreach. Sometimes however, you need to abide by the law like everyone else.

My point is simple: You visit a country, you respect their laws.
  • 1
@Fast-Nop "doesn't respect human rights even for its own citizens"

I don't recall them running civilians over with tanks? or public executions? or putting people in jail without a fair trial?

As shit as governments are in general, you are over exaggerating by saying they don't respect human rights.
  • 2
@MrCSharp The last part is something the US does :) (jail w/o trial)
  • 3
Bu@MrCSharp But if I’d plan something shady, I won’t take it with me on my device. Bring a Factory reset device, and Download your Backup in the US from the Cloud again.

I mean, it’s useless to give the gov that much Power because in the case they’d find something a good attacker would hide it.

Same shit with Vorratsdatenspeicherung in damn Neuland Germany

@dder now that's a very reasonable argument. And I agree.
But, is it a good enough reason for border agents to not check travelers?

They can't let all people through without checking, and they can't stop every single person either.

I say that even if I and others don't like what they do, we still need to remember they are human and doing their job as best as they can.

At the same time, yeah, we need to know our rights and don't let them abuse their power, but also we shouldn't be assholes about it either.

@norman70688 *"Das Internet ist für uns alle Neuland."
  • 4
@MrCSharp Well the US justice borders on ridiculousness anyway, which is why the incarcaration quota is higher in the US than in China.

Specifically for foreigners, they don't have to get a trial at all to be detained in prisons and be tortured. That's what Guantanamo is, after all.

I won't fly to the US, not even professionally. Let them have their pseudo security shit show at their borders all day long. Let them put up the most annoying bullies that the country can come up with at the borders to give an appropriate first impression to visitors. Even China manages better at its borders in order not to leave such an impression.
  • 2
@Fast-Nop anyone remotely compares usa to shitty socialist nightmare like china and russia have no credibility at all. Boo hoo, they searched your belongings and held you couple hours in custody. Dont bring me your one in a million anecdotes either.
USA is far fucking better than most when it comes to freedom. Smart people can be stupid sometimes, especially about this case. There are no go zones in those paradise like scandinavian countries, you are arrested in britain for sharing a meme, give me a break.
  • 3
@MrCSharp Yet if the same happens to you somewhere in the world you'll be whining about "privacy, American citizen and have rights, etc. The usual bullshit"

You're right. If ain't happening to you, it's okay.

    Fuck this unjust world order.
  • 3
    @MrCSharp

What happens if you - because of the sheer pressure at the border - forget the PIN / password of your devices (assuming you don't use fingerprint or similar)?
Of what if someone travels with a new or empty device (or a persons sparely uses his phone)?

Is both a reason to reject entrance? If it isn't, wouldn't 'the bad guys' do the same?

Of course one has to follow the laws when entering another country, but one can (and should) still complain about those laws.
  • 0
Just wipe you're device before going there and set It up when you are in the country
  • 1
If that surprised you you seriously got some reading to do on the USA.
    Just saying Guantanamo...
  • 0
@sbiewald not a valid argument. Pin numbers are literally muscle memory.
  • 0
@iskandergaba I'm not American. Try again.

Every country has border agents that can search your stuff without a warrant.
We only hear about these things in the US because it's cool to hate them.
  • 1
@Fast-Nop seriously? America is worst than China? You might want to look hard at your opinion here.

And Guantanamu was for terrorists that behead people, blow up schools, etc... I don't see those idiots worthy of any human rights.

Also funny you mention china... The only country that introduced "Social Credit System" to control the population.. But yeah, USA is literally a shit hole for the very rare chance they take a look at your phone.
  • 1
@MrCSharp People forget the simplest things...

Other thing: What if a person travels without a device and buys a new one in the states?
  • 2
@MrCSharp Last time I looked, only shitholes practice putting people into torture prisons without even a fair court process. The US are rapidly deteriorating into a totalitarian state. Along with typical USSR shit like secret courts, that's Cheka style revived.

Add the decision to put the dumbest assholes of the nation as pissy border guards, and I'm happy to decline any US travel, both for vacancies and professional. And yeah, China doesn't have this latter problem because they don't want that the first impression visitors get from their country is meeting total assholes.
