I want to buy a ThinkPad in order to replace a Chromebook and put a Linux in it, but they don't refund the Windows licence 😕

    So you really want that 5 euros back?

    @Codex404
    Thought it was more around 70

    @VonKavalier over here we can buy OEM licenses for 5 euros

    Hmm... Yeah that's a bummer. Afaik there's only one brand that sells Linux computers. The ThinkPads are great though, and can be real monsters

    Love my t480, got a little 2248 pcie SSD in the m.2 slot for the wwan card and everything is crazy fast. Glad Intel bumped up the core count.

    @Codex404 Yeah, but are you sure that this license is actually legit? Yes, in EU you can resell those, but AFAIK you need proof that you are the only user of that license and many sellers only send key, with is not enough.

    You could of course in court try to blame the seller if key isn't legit, but for that price court might not believe that you had no idea that 10-20x cheaper license would be most likely illegal.

    Why not put Linux on that chromebook?

    @electrineer
    Not fast enough, it is very limited I already tried 😕

    @VonKavalier did you try this method? https://github.com/reynhout/chrx/...

    Does it have arm or Intel?

    @electrineer
    I tried Crouton on arm. Very few packages were compatible so I couldn't really use it for what I needed 😕

    @VonKavalier yeah, arm is a different story

    ThinkPad's can be pretty pricey, I wouldn't be worried about getting the license refunded if you're already spending quite a bit on the laptop...

    Also as others have said the license costs the OEM next to nothing.

    @arraysstartat1 I contacted MS and asked. According to them they are legit keys but only for one time activation.

    Do what I do, I have Ubuntu Budgie on a VM works great with only 8GB of RAM assigned to it (out of total 16GB)

    But of course, I have an SSD that helps a lot...

    @gitpush which chromebook has 16 gigs of ram and why?
  • 0
    @electrineer Sorry wasn't talking about Chrome book, I meant on his ThinkPad since he can't get a refund on Windows License, just throw a VM and keep windows

    @gitpush
    Yeah but I really won't use window 😕 So better use full machine on Linux
  • 1
    @gitpush well the point of this rant was that op doesn't want to use windows and doesn't want to buy it either

    I'm getting a cheap t400 with a core two duo to work in bed. Don't need much, just has to be 64 bit

    @william341 you might want a standing bed for a more healthy work environment
