My work laptop , a 2015 MacBook Pro, finally bricked today. I put in a request for a 15.6" System76 Oryx tonight. Crossing my fingers!

    Maybe so. Maybe the company will get some more life out of it. I don't really give a shit. That's their business.

    @gitpush

    I'm going on leave for three months, starting tomorrow, and when I work from home as I have been for two weeks, I don't touch my laptop. So I figured the risk to my productivity was nonexistent, to update from El Capitan to Mojave. The update stalled after a couple minutes, and after about ten hours I powered it off. When I turned it back on, it wouldn't boot. It would give me the initial low-level login, then some terminal text about how there was no OS would pop up in the top left corner, then the display would change to an attractive black and white screen with messages in a half dozen languages that my computer encountered a problem and would not boot. It just repeats this.

    On top of the fact that only one USB port works, and the battery will take a charge maybe one time in three means that I'm entitled to a new machine, so I'm excited for that.

    I had a 2011 17” MacBook Pro (last 17” MacBook ever made) till last year when I opted for a 2015 15” (sounds like yours). I’d be devastated if it broke anytime soon because it’s the last of a dying breed. This is the last MacBook with a good keyboard, trackpad, and useful ports! I got AppleCare with mine so hopefully that helps. I’ve had a few other computers but I prefer the MacBook. I had a Lenovo yoga pro 2 and the 4K scaling was garbage (also inaccurate trackpad clicks). I have a hackintosh I built but it’s a desktop.

    @Stebner55

    Yep, the hardware and UX deficiencies of the models made after 2017 are the exact reason I don't want another MacBook.

    Did you reach the 1 000 charging cycles that Apple locks down? It won't boot if you reach it, and you'll need the exchange the battery.

    @humblegeek damn, lucky you, my lenovo died on me pretty hard.

    @Stocken

    I'm sure the company will figure that out and whether the laptop is usable anymore. No longer my problem.

    @bahua wow that's strange, I updated two iMacs with no issues, guess you were lucky (yup lucky) so that you get a new one XD

    I hope no major data loss :)

    @gitpush

    I keep all my data on my owncloud(now nextcloud), so that is fine. What I'll lose is mostly macos-specific app configs and settings. No great loss. And I am totally pumped for a System76 laptop, if it gets approved by procurement.
