Laptop Recommendations? What do you use now?
Use cases: General use, python, scala, web dev etc.

I've got an HP Envy; it's alright. Can handle most things. Played fortnite on it and it worked just fine.

Follow up questions:
Budget?
Size preference?
Would you prefer an Ultrabook that's portable or a gaming laptop that's got power?

As always, i recommend dell. Im using an inspiron right now, will upgrade to an xps sometime this year.

I use a Thinkpad x201. It's cheap (200$ on eBay), lightweight (for it's price), runs Linux perfectly

I run a ThinkPad T480. Runs Linux like a champ and is built like a tank.

I would definitely suggest a thinkpad or XPS...
Personally, I use MacBook... it’s great really! Works fine and all, but lacks the customization of Linux which I dearly miss (I might attempt installing arch on it tomorrow 😅😂)

Just one thing... do understand clearly how much RAM u need... I can’t emphasize on how important that is 😅😊

I am a XPS user so I'm biased to my beloved 15. Altought if you plan to stress it a lot I'd get it only if you can do hardware tweaks or have friends who can (repasting, thermal padding etc) as the solutions with dedicated GPU tend to throttle a lot during hotter weather.

It comes down to a lot of factors like budget, expected life of the laptop, form factor and screen size, keyboard preferences... Pump out some info and I'll post some suggestions.

Of course webdev is not super duper demanding, but high end laptops let you feel their performance even in small tasks.

The librem 15. It's super nice. My wife uses it for Facebook and Netflix, but it has the specs to do good programming (but not 3D modeling).

I have a MacBook Pro i7 2.5Ghz 16GB 512GB. I love it. I am currently using PyCharm Pro.

I have an HP Spectre X360 in that sexy Ash color but it is collecting dust now.

Truth be told, I could probably do my Python and JS work on my Pixelbook... I have a lifetime account at CodeAnywhere.

@electric-ghost ooh zbooks looks nice. But anything with a nvme storage is beyond 1500usd and has workstation graphics which is honestly overkill for my work i think

@Stuxnet envys are good but i’ve heard most of them have heating and battery life problems 😕
Budget is around 1000-1500usd
14-15inch would be ideal
I don’t actually need a gaming laptop would definitely prefer something more portable

What I'm most recently doing is buying a laptop with 8 gigs of RAM DDR4, 256 gb m.2 SSD drive and decent CPU. Most of those motherboards support up to 32 GB RAM. So, you know, buy two 16 gigs sticks and usually it works like a charm. For development it is heaven.

@starrynights89 this is a good one. Fits the budget plenty of configuration. How’s your experience so far with it?

@Paramite Yup I’ve gone through it. But mostly it’s got to do with the display technology. Cuz i think 4k is kind of an overkill on a 15inch screen 1440p or even a good ips with 1080p and a decent contrast ratio will do a good job for me

@datawraith Macs are soo damn expensive and you get soo little on hardware for that. X360 looks cool but i kinda like less moving parts on my laptops.

@albertb I’m personally not a fan of gaming laptops. But the specs do look pretty decent on this

@devroot0 I did it two times, one more time in next month or so.

First was some oldish Lenovo ThinkPad, all I know it had DDR3 but luckily enough support for 32 GB RAM.

Second time was my current dev beast, also Lenovo, this time IdeaPad Y700-15ISK. Sadly it had 16 Gigs in 2x8 GB way, which are lying around now.

Next upgrade will be Lenovo ThinkPad E580 - not tested upgrade yet, but I did some research and it should be just fine.

@devroot0 Truth on Mac cost... But I got mine refurbed. I would never pay full price. Can't afford.

I use a dell latitude e5470. I got it refurbished from dells overstock website. 450 USD. Its a solid machine. 4 core i7 and 16 gb ddr4. Came eith some other business features too like a sim card slot. Been running great for 2 years. But its not sexy.

@zlice I got a Pixel XL refurb for $250.

I paid $250 for a Moto G5 Plus last year.

This Pixel is like 5x better for the same price.

I didn’t even think of buying refurbished. I’ll see if i can find a good MacBook pro or a good dell or a Thinkpad.

@devroot0 Make sure to buy from a reputable place. I have had VERY good luck with refurbished computers (knock on wood). At least 5 so far (1 tower, 4 laptops) and zero issue.
