Headphone is not allowed at my workplace unless it has something to do with work. Have to ask for permission.
-
potata14806y@error503 What's the reason behind this?
Unless each of your personal member has his own private space - this is a total bull$h!t in my opinion...
Anyway, using noise cancelling earphones from Shure - just putting them on reduces office noise by 80% and turning music at low volumes - completely separates me. Listening to a lot of random music, mostly something that energises you to move on ("motivational" and so on).
ps. Yes, our whole office is sitting with such headphones and when we need to talk - we just ping people on slack or wave our hands to draw attention :) At first it was weird but in the end - nobody is being disturbed with phone calls and so on -
I'll usually listen to pop punk or post hardcore. Even though it's a distraction sometimes.
Unless I'm debugging. In that case, I won't listen to anything. -
BigBoo23206yI listen to whatever the hell I feel like that day.
Some current favorites are:
Graveyard
Chuck Mangione
MASTER BOOT RECORD
Cynic
Supertramp
I'm not one to stay inside one genre. -
SPie18266ylo-fi hip hop or some instrumental stuff. Also video game and movie soundtracks sometimes.
-
runtime4486yCurrently I'm on the Animal Crossing Soundtrack trip.
But normally I listen to Lofi or Ambient. -
@electric-ghost I love trance and I don't see why it should distract one during work.
Unless you have a differen understanding if what trance is.
Some people think that EDM, house, techno, ... is also trance, which these are clearly not. -
Ever played Hotline Miami (1/2)? That kind of music. Discovered recently that in fact, most video game music has been written with the idea of making the player focus - also, it's good shit... OK, it's shit.
-
I love modern electronic music. Especially solar fields and other video game electro stuff
-
@electric-ghost Aaaah yeah, the 90s trance... 😍
Damn I miss Tiësto's old performances like in "Parade of the Athletes"... -
acidowl706yMostly drum & bass, techno and sometimes some lofi. Kinda depends on the task/project.
-
elzdev4086yAlmost everykind of music. It depends in my mood.
But if everything fails, trancecore / metallcore works almost to put me in the tunnel.🤓 -
@error503 I worked at a place for two months that had the same rule, one of the main reasons I left.
-
@ilPinguino i listen to hotnline miami 1. Fucking crazy tracks.
I like psychedelic shit, rock, electro, trance, dub, reggea...
As long as its progressive, deep, psy and some good solos im in.
Moaning cities is one of my favourite. Psy rock discoveries!!!! -
Crazed20506yMusic. Sometimes hip hop (kyle radio on pandora), sometimes post-hardcore (bring me the horizon radio on pandora), occasionally I'll listen to some... Whatever cazzette is classified as on YouTube
-
teilo4086yWhen I need to concentrate, I have, in the past used Brain.fm
But I find that chillstep, or even trance, works just as well. -
yes. both.
sometimes no music, just the headphones.
when I do listen to music, it's... depends on a mood.
sometimes glitch hop and/or similar (Savant, Glitch Mob, any of the "best glitch hop gaming mix" videos on youtube), when I'm feeling like a hyperactive session will do me good.
other times, something chill like alt-j or similar, when i feel like a... chill session, the kind of programming when you just lurk around and jab into small things.
but usually I play some podcasts, like HoneyBadgerRadio, or Sargon of Akkad, or some of this D&D streams... which is weird, because... I play them just to have some familiar voices I like in a relatively steady tempo and tone, *so that I can ignore them*. it's like... well, weird. people in my headphones talking, which i ignore, so that I can ignore outside noises. because I can't just ignore the outside noises by themselves. -
also, game critique videos and analyses, those 1-3 hour long ones. i also ignore the content, but then later I re-watch them/re-listen to them, actually paying attention.
but usually i know I'm the most productive when I don't need anything, not even the headphones, because my thoughts are just so loud that I can't hear (/don't percieve) the surroundings at all.
i love those times, when I suddenly realize that the podcast/music mix has ended like two hours ago, but I didn't notice, because my thoughts about what I'm doing kept being so loud that it felt like there's still something playing. -
Tech death and melodic death metal. Very awesome musically and always keeps it interesting.
-
Yes absolutely, I can't even enter my programming trance state without music drawing the room and momentum for my mind.
I think the top two will be Atmospheric Electro (self defined genre, pretty close to ambient but a little more vibrant) and Hip Hop.
But sometimes metal is just good to powergrind some tedious shit.
Also, if your work environment is entirely coding related and doesn't require cross-attention in your office this is a very questionable rule.
Have you tried speaking with your boss about this? If you can lay out in a formal manner that music increases your productivity and your ability to respond isn't hindered, (as mentioned by others we used hand signs in a three way handshake type or pings if out of sight) I would really like to hear his response as to *why not*.
Explaining the 3way handshake we used:
* I wave
* Colleague either takes headphones off and talks with me
OR
colleague makes hand sign back to signalize he's focussing on something
* I talk to him as soon as his headphones are off -
Sefie16576yMusic: anything that is instrumental, rock, metal, electro or gothic. OST, dragonforce, Crüxshadows, glitch mob, deadmau5... You name it.
Headphones: only if people keep talking. -
In the morning until afternoon:Classical rock (pink floyd, doors, nirvana, jimi hendrix, led zeppelin mostly). in the evening blues and folk.
-
Usually rawstyle/raw hardstyle. Sometimes euphoric/melodic hardstyle but not often.
The more I need to focus, the more raw my music choice becomes.
Those insanely destructive kicks/synths are 😍
Euphoric example: Cyber - Lost Town
Raw example: Rejecta - Let My Tape Rock
Destructive raw example: Malice - Retaliate or Psychopathics - Who We Are 😊 -
I love to listen to music. Genre depends on my overall mood and wellbeing and varies from pagan metal, rock and metalcore(?) to electro and even k-pop.
-
Honestly i listen everything. From deep house to (heavy) metal and from classical compositions to chill/dubstep to rap. This is all encompassed by my Sony MDR-XB950N1 with active noise cancelling
-
Am I late? Am I late? I'm late am I not.
J-Music general, Oriental Core, Melodic Speedcore and Rock -
@error503 That sucks! At work, we just find a pair we like on Amazon and ask for it
-
@electric-ghost @potata @hashedram @delegate212 @arjaycodes
The shit reason I was give was that it's an open office and people don't want to use slack or Skype to chat with each other. They believe in open communication. I hear people shouting from one-end of the office to the other-end of the office.
I don't know what the fuck is going. -
Eversor3536yTried several noise cancellation headphones, but they all sound like shit compared to my BeyerDynamics headphone. So I still use that one while listening to my daily dose of metal! \m/
-
devTea240886yJazz or lofi pop. Sometimes game ost is good too
Don’t have money for noise cancelling headphones -
bezorp3746yIn ear headphones that let me still hear everything around me.
For music, lots of video game stuff, and maybe some downtempo instrumental.
Do you as a developer use
1. Noise cancelling headsets
2. Music
while working?
If music, what kind or genre?
Personally, I listen a lot to Electronic Ambience/Chillstep.
