I hate to say it, I think Macs are going to beat windows. (update: or maybe Windows is just going to fade and the market will be split?)

Not better hardware, or value, or experience. Windows is just getting more and more ads.

I was thinking, gee I want something like Linux, but well supported hardware.

That's a Mac. Shit.

    It also means there's a relatively low bar to entry for another competitor. Just bundle Linux with working Bluetooth and audio and decent hardware, don't charge as much as apple.

    @atheist seems like a you-problem.

    in general, i have had way more windows-problems with windows-supported hardware than i had linux-problems with non-supported hardware.

    maybe you're just using a non-debian-based shit-tier distro?

    also:

    > I think Macs are going to beat windows

    no. never gonna happen.

    simply because macs are (or at least try to seem like) a high-tier product, while PCs (regardless of OS) can be dirt-cheap.

    and the majority of the population can only afford a dirt-cheap PC, if at all.

    @atheist lenovo is supposed to be 100% linux compatible

    @tosensei I agree with the price point. This is what got me thinking about a third commercial Linux distro with hardware support of some sort. I think a lot of people's use case can be met by a chromebook, for spreadsheets and boring shit. I used to think gamers would never move to Linux, but then steam os came along and I'd go with a steam deck. Then it's like software devs needing high end hardware which is what mac meets.

    So maybe I think the market will split and windows will die.

    @antigermanist cool, I didn't know this. Like this is what I mean, like if hardware gets more Linux friendly what keeps windows going?
  • 3
    @atheist one can only hope

    @tosensei I know hardware support has definitely improved over the years, I tried my last laptop (probably 6 years ago) with ubuntu and had problems, don't think I got built-in Bluetooth working. I think every tower I've tried worked really well. I know it's getting better.

    I've also had my share of windows hardware problems, mainly WiFi cards when I reinstall. I've spent more time with windows than Linux. I don't know how much it's bias.

    @atheist also i had better luck with arch than debian-based things when it comes to hardware

    @tosensei debian suck dicks.

    Your eyes are vaginas
  • 2
    @atheist There is also these manufacturers that only sell machines with Linux. So you know hardware will work.
  • 1
    @antigermanist haha, half year ago you were running raw debian.

    What are people doing on Windows to get ads? I have WIndows 11 Pro. I can't remember if I have OpenShell or not on this yet. I don't have any ads. Is it because its Pro?

    @retoor I was a different man back then. Another life.
  • 2
    @retoor it was only temporary. I was just pissed because my laptop got stolen

    @antigermanist this time it was a straight sober guy?

    I just checked with colleague who has W11 Home. No ads in start menu. So that is slight improvement over W10.

    @Demolishun occasional suggestions to use copilot. Adding it to my start bar without asking.
    Random notifications for shit like some new game on the Microsoft store. Occasional requests to sign into a Microsoft account. Helpful tips for other software you might find useful. Pop ups telling me Edge is more power efficient than chrome.

    Like, they're no where near as bad as internet ads. They're not "frequent". But they're annoying. And getting worse. An OS doesn't need to sell me shit and should avoid harvesting my data cuz I use my pc for sensitive stuff. And sure, you can turn it all off. Then some new update adds some new kind of "helpful" feature Microsoft wants to tell you about in the hopes you'll spend more money with them, or sign up to some subscription, or use some free service so they can harvest your data.

    @atheist every time it suggests stuff like that I see how to uninstall the thing they suggest. So I guess I have seen that. I am hoping if its not installed it will not show up later <crosses fingers>.

    @Demolishun I turn it off too, but I've got like 5 windows devices I use with varying levels of frequency

    I mean, I don't see anything wrong with Macs eating some of Windows's market share. Competition is healthy.

    If it "Scares Microsoft straight" and makes theminvest in starting to consider User Experience again, it's a WinWinWin for everyone, who knows, maybe this will cause Windows 12(or whatever it will be) to be the Windows 7 of the 2030s.

    And if not, hey, at least it will still harm Microsoft in the pocket, which as long as they're assholes is a nice thing to see.

    There´s a way involving editing the the Windows registry to permanently disable Windows updates (https://ninjaone.com/blog/...).

    Lost too many auto-restart works in progress + issues w drivers support.
    Life is better now

    @webketje if you have Pro you can use group policy editor to disable updates. There is also a policy for keeping updates from updating drivers. Which I think is a huge issue for hardware. A lot of Windows approved hardware drivers are ass.

    @SoldierOfCode competitio is what fuel the antibiotic resistance. It suck dicks.

    Organism are meant to collaborate, not compete. Have you not read kropotkin?
