It also means there's a relatively low bar to entry for another competitor. Just bundle Linux with working Bluetooth and audio and decent hardware, don't charge as much as apple.

in general, i have had way more windows-problems with windows-supported hardware than i had linux-problems with non-supported hardware.

simply because macs are (or at least try to seem like) a high-tier product, while PCs (regardless of OS) can be dirt-cheap.

and the majority of the population can only afford a dirt-cheap PC, if at all.

@tosensei I agree with the price point. This is what got me thinking about a third commercial Linux distro with hardware support of some sort. I think a lot of people's use case can be met by a chromebook, for spreadsheets and boring shit. I used to think gamers would never move to Linux, but then steam os came along and I'd go with a steam deck. Then it's like software devs needing high end hardware which is what mac meets.

So maybe I think the market will split and windows will die.

@tosensei I know hardware support has definitely improved over the years, I tried my last laptop (probably 6 years ago) with ubuntu and had problems, don't think I got built-in Bluetooth working. I think every tower I've tried worked really well. I know it's getting better.

I've also had my share of windows hardware problems, mainly WiFi cards when I reinstall. I've spent more time with windows than Linux. I don't know how much it's bias.

Random notifications for shit like some new game on the Microsoft store. Occasional requests to sign into a Microsoft account. Helpful tips for other software you might find useful. Pop ups telling me Edge is more power efficient than chrome.

Like, they're no where near as bad as internet ads. They're not "frequent". But they're annoying. And getting worse. An OS doesn't need to sell me shit and should avoid harvesting my data cuz I use my pc for sensitive stuff. And sure, you can turn it all off. Then some new update adds some new kind of "helpful" feature Microsoft wants to tell you about in the hopes you'll spend more money with them, or sign up to some subscription, or use some free service so they can harvest your data.

I mean, I don't see anything wrong with Macs eating some of Windows's market share. Competition is healthy.

If it "Scares Microsoft straight" and makes theminvest in starting to consider User Experience again, it's a WinWinWin for everyone, who knows, maybe this will cause Windows 12(or whatever it will be) to be the Windows 7 of the 2030s.

And if not, hey, at least it will still harm Microsoft in the pocket, which as long as they're assholes is a nice thing to see.
