You are implying facebook is the only company selling your data.
I bet you didn't know this - but even your schools sell your data. -
@-vim- they do by ignorance or idiocy. Don't quit, everywhere is same, we are all fucked, to late to get back all data.
-
-vim-31687y@yendenikhil I think they use a service for the portal and the website thing, I hope it doesn’t collect info, because that would be very ðĪŽ
-
@AlexDeLarge you are going to depress @linuxxx with this situation(and ignorance) and mess up confidence (he calls hope) of @-vim-
*Gets popcorn* let's wait for it @AlexDeLarge ð -
@AlexDeLarge @yendenikhil thank you for calling @linuxxx, there's only one thing i love more than ultimatively failing a privacy discussion: seeing others fail. I was once young, naive and enthusiastic. But then workplace discussions happened, things like "i don't care, my data isn't valueable" and "i have nothing to hide" depressed me. And when i heard "i dont buy bitcoin because i dont want to support the darknets activities (weapon trade, child porn, etc.)" I gave up
-
@succcubbus that's no fun at all, his data is already out, deleting account will allow no new data but how much data is left to steal? :-\
-
@succcubbus this wont stop facebook from collecting data, unless you delete every identifying data (cookies, localstorage etc.)
I'd be interested to know if the big tech-companies have a evercookie-like project that identifies you by any of their sites cookies and can restore information when you delete only one site's cookies -
@yendenikhil @yendenikhil Facebook will have to delete that data after a short period.
And "they already have data so it does not matter if I give them more" isn't really an argument. -
@succcubbus giving them more is not argument at all, I agree.
But after some time Facebook will delete the data is lie, it will just not be publicly available after short while, but will be stored on Facebook servers till end of eternity! -
@yendenikhil I can't proof that they delete it. But I very much doubt they'd risk getting into the massive legal trouble of not deleting your data at that point.
Arguing from EU-General Data Protection Regulation point of view, don't know how data protection legislation is elsewhere. -
@succcubbus so many loopholes,
1. data is in USA not in Europe even though he is in Netherlands.
2. The data needs to be kept in case government asks for it.
3. The data is scrubbed and made anonymous and kept to improve performance.
4. He specifically didn't ask to invoke the act, hence umbrella Facebook policy prevails.
I can think few more, but you can take your pick.
I used to think that people are very skeptical and paranoid about privacy, but I don't think it is true anymore! -
-vim-31687y@yendenikhil Oh shit! It’s bad! I can’t find any license, terms or terms of privacy whatsoever! Not on their shitty app, not on their irresponsive web app and not on their website!
-
First is protected against with the new ruling. Data of eu citizens is protected under eu law no matter where it's stored or processed.
Second: they have to http://privacy-regulation.eu/en/...
Third: yes of course, but there will (hopefully) be no more information identifying them
Fourth: yes -
@yendenikhil i agree, there are so many ways to find a loophole. Facebook did so many privacy-violating things in the past, they would risk storing data longer than allowed too.
People don't care about privacy. People want to flush the toilet with a 3rd party app that requires camera access, they want to watch vod on a decice that can monitor them and even if they knew their smart vacuum sends EVERYTHING (even maps of their rooms) to his creator they wouldn't get rid of it even then -
@karma you are Dutch (EU) citizen and even if you are Brit, the EU legislation applies till at least March 2019.
-
@succcubbus for second, the link you provided, check 3 (d). ð They can maintain data and it is very difficult to prove that they have not erased all data! And that is still subject to his request to erase data.
-
@yendenikhil 3d links to Article 89 which states that this is only applicable when using pseudonymization or similar measures.
And they would have to proof that this falls under "public interest, scientific or historical research purposes or statistical purposes", which they would probably win though :/ -
@succcubbus I'm with you on this.. Hehe.. can't understand half the things, is this how we look at non tech people when they speak dumb (as per us)
-
CWins48117y#1 Create an account with the name "Erica Schwanz".
#2 Link each other as wife & husband
#3 Change your name to "Schwanz" cuz you married a Schwanz and now you're part of the Schwanz-family. -
@linuxxx while we were discussing this topic from OP, @AlexDeLarge and later I thought, about general awareness of data privacy (in context of social media and other seemingly innocent places where we provide our data), and in that context I think you would have some wisdom to share!
-
@linuxxx I might digress little from the topic, but I see lot of people have ease (Google for everything, and Facebook for rest of the things) in mind before privacy. There are very few people who take privacy so seriously that they are absent from these Giants. Slowly world is getting more aware of privacy concerns, but still ease of use is winning. I'm ashamed to say that even I, understood the privacy concerns late, and have Facebook and Google accounts. Even though I stopped using Facebook I didn't delete the account and I still use Google services (slowly moving away from it, though haven't found equally good services other than ddg), and not everyone have know how of setting up their own VPN and mail server etc. So after the background, the question is two fold,
1. How and where (the alternatives and not self hosted servers as not everyone has the know how} to get out of possible websites (Google, Facebook etc which are optional things) with no more (or least) damage to privacy?
2. How to deal with mandatory data gatherings (medical, school profile, work profile, government profiles) that it would not cause harm in Equifax like situation, or when school people are idiot enough to allow others to get data or outright sell it? -
And one last question, how and where to start learning about privacy and security?
-
@yendenikhil a few good suggestions for migrating away from Google: https://spreadprivacy.com/how-to-re...
-
@succcubbus You even have privacy conscious in your profile! Which messengers do you use if I may ask?
-
@linuxxx signal as much as I can, but also WhatsApp with friends that won't migrate.
I do know that all metadata gets leaked about those conversations but at least no message content. -
@succcubbus I do use WhatsApp BUT only on my company phone so although I don't like it, it's not on my personal devices :)
-
lubwn8597yI am having fake name for last almost 10 years. They blocked me twice, still created new account with the same name. I am not hiding anything but I also do not like facrbook policies.
-
@yendenikhil
1. Literally just searching for alternatives. It's not that hard :) (for example: encrypted open email service landed me Tutanota of which I'm a premium user for years now)
2. You can't really avoid that. I'm not saying I can avoid all data breaches/sellings but as for the ones I can avoid by being careful, i go for it.

So ... Facebook somehow found out I used a 'fake' rear name and forced me to switch it back ...
So now they can again sell my data, and I am again haunted by stupid ads I don't want ...
