Good luck.
Although, devRant is about anonymity for some, so I don't know how many people would like to get their Discord accounts linked to their devRant accounts. -
@c3r38r170 you are quite right. People are concerned about privacy in Discord and, generally, any chat platform with window to providers and agencies, unlike Jitsi.
By the way, telling last 2 digits of user tag in Discord is really nothing if you, for example, have got completely another username at this platform from one on devRant, so yeah... -
@vintprox I know I know, it can even have a very good reception. I was just stating it.
-
C0D4681464y@c3r38r170 discord is a lot easier to stay anonymous then other services.
Unless of course you used legit details, but why would you do that? -

@Linux I don't use matrix either but solely because they still save a lot of metadata.
As for discord, their privacy policy is just plain bad. -
NoMad141614y@theabbie Can you remove me from your lists? I don't want to be tagged by you, or your bots.
-
@Linux I don't really trust any third parties in this case and I've given up on hosting my own so yeah ๐
-
C0D4681464y@Frederick I've missed a lot of names, come to think of it. But then I could be here a while.
-
@theabbie Not owned by a big corporation, devs seem trustable, not a chat service.
-
@linuxxx So you agree that companies trade with privacy as they go big, That's bound to happen. We can trust services unless they are proven to be unsafe.
-
Linux438104y@linuxxx
Also, I would love hosting a privacy-focused matrix server again, but toghether with other people.
I ran one for two years with 3k active users -
@linuxxx It's personal opinion, your not trusting Discord is your opinion, As long as it's on internet, there will always be suspicion. If you really want to be completely safe, you will need to build seperate internet for yourself.
-
@theabbie I don't agree. Technically it's my opinion but I think it's also quite factual as they straight out sell your data which means losing control over how it's used and we've seen plenty of examples as for how bad this can go.
There are enough privacy friendly alternatives, they often just require self hosting and with 50-60 hour work weeks I have about zero energy left. -
@linuxxx It's not factual in case of Discord though, or maybe. And self-hosting can't be considered an "Alternative" You can't host a seperate Discord and expect everyone to use that. Your Data goes through a lot more places, privacy is not even a thing once your data leaves your computer.
-
@Linux Leaving out something based on mere suspicion is not smart. not using public transport by saying there is 1% chance of Accident is not considered smart. No need for Argument. These are Facts.
-
@theabbie I think it actually is.
And not being able to expect everyone bring able to host their own alternative does not not make this an alternative.
Privacy definitely can be a thing when the data leaves the computer, if it couldn't be:
- Anyone could login to any account
- Encryption would suddenly magically become completely useless
- all servers on the Internet would be accessible to anyone
- aaaaaand so on.
If a strongly end to end encrypted message leaves my phone, I definitely lose control (privacy) over the encrypted message itself. But since no one can access the plaintext data.... I keep control over the plaintext data regardless, thus retaining privacy on another level. -
@linuxxx "Discord as a platform is not intended for encrypted communications. It does use standard encryption, but does not provide end-to-end encryption of its video chats."
Okay, you were right about Discord, maybe, I will learn this lesson on privacy later in life. for now, I would pass. -
Linux438104y@theabbie
Read the EULA, you dont need to even suspect it since they admit it. It is their bussinessmodell. -
@Linux In that case it's fine, then please build a series of startups with alternatives for everything and is Privacy focussed.
-
@vintprox Privacy is a very debatable concept, we will do it in some other Rant then.

@F1973 If that's the case, it's no problem, because we will post important stuff on dR to gather around somewhere else. The point is, we simply united people to receive notifications in timely manner ๐
There is event on the nose, it will involve fallback activities if certain tech issues appear, but I'll look forward to get rid of such troubles. -
Condor324964yI have a Discord account (technically) but I never use it.. the app and the idea of "servers" that aren't really servers feels.. not very tailored to my taste. And there's already a Telegram chat for devRant as well (https://t.me/codrTalk) as well, so yeah...
Interesting to see the collabs be used again though! And good luck :) -
@Condor thanks. Well, I dislike Telegram for requiring mobile number and absence of "server" abstraction that helps us with structuring user content.
-
I'm not on Discord, Telegram, Threema, Signal, Whatsapp or whatever wants my mobile number, and I would just want IRC.
-
@Lor-inc I've never missed anything in IRC since the days when I compiled ircII from tarball under HP-UX.
-
@Fast-Nop That's probably why you never missed features. You expect nothing more from a chat app than what IRC can do.
-
@Hudiahal haha, this thread quickly transformed into a collection of one-time tokens. Sorry if it's distracting ๐ถ I'm thinking to improve the detection range to wherever user posts a comment with token, they'll get verified, not just this thread. Just you wait ๐
-
epictern1484y@vintprox that can easily be done. Just need to remove the check for this post and just check users recent comment
-
scor38044yThis collab constantly shows up as a notification to another account though being bound to this one.
Is this a known feature? -
scor38044y@homo-lorens
Could, if it worked.
Getting notifs for every single new comment.
@bugreport -
scor38044y@rEaL-jAsEs
Nah, don't worry. It's allright.
Just thought you'd address the test to someone or at the bug replication test. -
@Eklavya bbbeeeeecaaaaaaauuuuuusssseeeee I was iiiiiiiiinnnnnnn another reality where th time is slowed down by 72% .
Is my excuse acceptable? -
Just a reminder that you are NOT required to post any usertag to get verified. It was needed in early days, but this tradition is long gone! Now moderators manually verify if it's you or not.
Take care. ๐งก -
Everyone, sorry for the ping, but I just couldn't close my eyes to your Discord usertags lying around here. ๐คซ If you are concerned about their exposure, you may want to delete those comments (most of them have `#` character).

For anyone new coming across this, I remind that, for verification, you only need to message one of our moderators on 2 platforms, devRant & Discord. Read the #guide for steps: https://discord.gg/2gEUWvkyMc ๐ -
@vintprox Is there a security concern in exposing user tags other than enabling people to associate my devrant profile with my discord and add me as a friend?
-
@lorentz bullseye! Nothing besides that. (Even then there is a way to find out who's there and who's not, but I don't wanna get into details...)
-
OK, now that Discord is going to be carelessly removing discriminators from their system, I wanted to let you know that exposed numbers don't give attackers anything... unlike your new nicknames. Nobody liked how Discord handled this and created more vulnerabilities along the way.
If you have an advanced threat model, I suggest you to use a username different from one on devRant and do not pass the verification - it's not a private knowledge whether you're there or not. Otherwise, you can verify yourself to favor clearly stating your association. -
@vintprox i just set my server username to the same as on here, in terms of verification.

๐ dR Community Channel at Matrix has been announced! https://devrant.com/rants/8266215
This collab takes a new shape, explaining what works now and if we can have chat outside Discord. It's not to say that Discord has been ditched entirely - only that I would strongly encourage further joining dR Community Channel via Matrix or waiting for dRCM private rooms. Until we're fully committed to this migration, you can still visit Discord guild.
๐ท Please consider this thread OBSOLETE and post all your questions about "drcc" with an appropriate tag.
