I am leaving devRant. This community used to be incredibly healthy and I loved every person on it. now it has grown into just pages of all caps screaming and cursing or non-dev related memes that do not belong. Maybe I will return, maybe I won't. All I know is that I am extremely disappointed in this site. Hate me as you will, you know I'm right and I know I am not alone in this opinion.5

Friend: "Oh so can you like... hack into people's computers and stuff?"
Me: "Yeah, if they just give me their password, I can hack in easily!"6 -
Got an assignment last year to use a buffer overflow to "hack" a series of problems within some kind of assembly code. There were 2 required problems, but 6 in total. I completed all 7 (one hidden bonus problem).
The teacher that gave that assignment ended up writing me a letter of recommendation for my masters program -
I am beyond pissed at my Machine Learning class in college. you would think an advanced topic in Computer Science would require some prior knowledge of the field, but apparently not. A quarter of the class has ZERO programming knowledge, and the professor is basing the class around that. I took this course to learn how to CODE Machine Learning algorithms, not spend weeks upon weeks on learning how to calculate probabilities...2

I think I'm the only one who doesn't like the new black theme... I think I'll stick with the current dark instead3

Last day of my internship and I'm the only one in the office... most people have off or are in meetings and my manager is coming in late. My summer project is done... I don't know what to do with myself3

In a Computer Systems class, we had a project to debug and buffer-overflow a program written in x86 Assembly. There were 2 mandatory problems we had to figure out, but the teacher told us there were 6 in total that can be solved. Not only did I complete all 6 on the next day (the project was due 2 weeks from then), I also noticed something looked weird in the code, so I investigated and found a hidden 7th problem and solved that too. Only one in the class to do so, and the teacher said I was the best student in any of her classes this year.

My girlfriend asked me for help picking out a new laptop for school... being the helpful person I am, I picked out this but with Arch Linux because who needs 2 Nvidia cards anyways10

Stuck at a concert for band my girlfriend likes on a Friday night... so many side projects could be worked on right now1

So I finally got full computer access 2 and a half weeks into working, and now there's "scheduled network downtime" with no indication of when it will be back up. I swear I'm never going to get anything done here
-
And so begins week 3 of 5 without full computer access. I'm able to do some research needed but I'm still very limited. The only programs I can use are IE11, and the three basic MS Office programs. Oh well... at least I'm still getting paid by the hour1
-
the advantage of dating a non-dev: she thinks I'm incredibly smart when I describe what I'm working on, when in reality I have no clue what I'm doing 🙃12
-
Just started week two of this internship and still no computer access... I only have 3 weeks left here so this better pick up quickly3

So after waiting 3 days for an ID to get into a computer, I'm now told it's going to take 12-14 hours before I can do online security training just so I can actually start working. I'm only at this job for a month and I'm not going to even touch any real work at this rate...
Oh well, at least I'm paid by the hour, not by the amount of work -
Started a new job today... but I couldn't actually do anything because I had to wait for 4 hours to get an ID card (necessary for computer access because security) only to get told to come back tomorrow to try again. Off to a great start!!
At least my manager realized that this is fucked and filed a complaint against their department. -
Leaving for work before finding the source of a bug is the worst kind of stress. All I thought about the entire time I was at work 😭4

I don't know if I'm too frustrated to find a simple solution or if I'm just plain stupid but WHY DOES MY IMAGE LOSE 90% QUALITY WHEN I IMPORT IT TO ANDROID STUDIO???1

Honestly, I have a love/hate relationship with coding. On one hand, I can feel on top of the world when something works the way I want it to. On the other hand, coding can make me feel more incompetent and depressed about my life than anything else. I would never want to do anything else with my life, but it's really tough when the thing you love is also the source of a lot of self-hate.1

Wal-Mart just asked if everyone could stop using AWS, because Amazon is a competitor of theirs. Thoughts?6
